10 Lessons I Learned at Teen Vogue‘s Fashion University That Will Help You Land Your Dream Job

This Saturday, I found myself among the hordes of well-dressed 16-24 year-olds at Teen Vogue‘s annual Fashion University event in Midtown Manhattan, where industry VIPS like as Grace Coddington, BryanBoy, Amy Astley and more, dropped their infinite fashion knowledge on us.

Competition for seats was fierce. Girls and boys from all over the world rushed and crushed into seats like their careers depended on it. And after everything I learned this weekend, maybe our careers did depend on it.

From working a part-time job at Starbucks, to online etiquette, to taking the time to enjoy just being a kid, here are the top 10 lessons I learned about how to land my fashion dream job.

Every year teens from across the globe flock to Teen Vogue‘s annual Fashion University in hopes of rubbing elbows with fashion’s elite and networking to score that dream internship. The three-day event features seminars and parties for the aspiring teen magazine editors, models, photographers and designers. This year I was lucky enough to attend. I sat in on seminars lead by Michael Kors, Alexander Wang, Linda Fargo and Teen Vogue editors.

RJ Cutler’s New Show is (Probably) About Teen Vogue

It looks like Lauren Conrad isn’t the only one using The September Issue as inspiration for a new TV show.

Amy Astley revealed months ago that Teen Vogue was developing a new television serious, though no other details were spared.

However, we recently learned that The September Issue director, R.J. Cutler, is working on a TV show about the fashion industry as well. Now The Cut is reporting that the two projects are connected and that the show is off to a bumpy start. Cutler seems to be having trouble finding industry insiders who are interested and willing to make the commitment.

The City‘s Erin Kaplan Leaves Elle for Teen Vogue–Is More TV In the Works?

The City‘s Erin Kaplan Leaves Elle for Teen Vogue–Is More TV In the Works?

Erin Kaplan, our favorite City character (seriously, what would Olivia Palermo be without her?), and Elle‘s head of PR is leaving the mag after over five years to become the head of PR at Teen Vogue.

While it could just be that Kaplan’s really good at her job and put in a good amount of time at Elle and is ready for a change to a different glossy with a different publisher, we’ve got a hunch Kaplan’s strong TV chops might have something to do with it. Teen Vogue‘s Amy Astley mentioned a little while back that the mag was developing a TV show. Kaplan proved herself to be a dynamic and engaging character on the City and she’d be an asset to a similar show.

Plus it only seems fair since City alums Olivia Palermo and Whitney Port both have shows in the works.

Sally’s Styling Seminary: An Interview with Teen Vogue‘s Amy Astley

Teen Vogue is one of my favorite magazines to peruse and read. The happy, energetic images Amy Astley puts on her pages bring pure joy to the unusually serious world of fashion. It’s always a pleasure to shoot for Ms. Astley. Indeed, she’s been the catalyst for several of my most memorable career highlights. (Hello, Miley Cyrus and Patrick Demarchelier on the rooftops of Paris!)

Amy works closely with me when I’m shooting to help me better understand the Teen Vogue girl, and how to create interesting and new images. It’s refreshing and inspiring to have such a rich dialogue with an editor about what I’m creating for their magazine. Speaking with Amy about styling gave me even more insight into what makes her editorship at Teen Vogue so awesome.

Derek Lam’s Myth of the West

Derek Lam’s Myth of the West

The Scene: Capitale—an old bank turned event space on Bowery. We entered into the show area—a grand ballroom with coffered ceilings and massive columns lining the walls. Beautiful. The Front Row: Anna Dello Russo (dressed in neon pink and bum-high leather boots), Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington and Amy Astley. André was there, but not in Read more →
