Andrew Weir Shows Us the Crazy, Amazing World of Casting, Talks Underage Models

For the third season in a row, ACW Worldwide, the casting agency founded by legendary casting director Andrew Weir, invited us to attend their huge day-long spring/summer 2012 casting this Sunday. As I’m about a foot too short to be a model, we were not there hoping to get a spot in one of the four major shows Weir was casting (Thakoon, Rebecca Taylor, Jen Kao and Rachel Zoe) and we will probably never know what it feels like to be one of the hundreds of gorgeous amazons filing through the Hudson Hotel library all day, walking for an audience of Weir and his staff. However, we now know what it’s like to be on the other side of the table–we got to sit right next to Weir and shadow him for about an hour of non-stop models. It was really fun. And informative.

Click through to get all the dirt on what goes on at a casting table, including why we think it might be a while before underage models are completely filtered out of runway shows, plus tons of photos!

See Crystal Renn, Bambi Northwood-Blyth and More at the ACW Worldwide Casting for New York Fashion Week

Walking in the big shows of a season can jump start any model’s career. (See: Arizona Muse) So, naturally hundreds of girls and guys piled into Hudson’s Library in Midtown yesterday to try their hand (or face) at impressing Andrew Weir, legendary casting director and founder of ACW casting agency. Everyone from up and coming new girls to industry powerhouse Crystal Renn stopped by to “take a walk” and pose for Weir’s cameras.

The whole process took over eight hours, but operations inside Hudson’s Library functioned like a well-oiled machine, each model working their way through a series of obstacles before greeting the Mr. Weir and strutting his or her stuff. It was a rare opportunity to see the girls and guys we worship in magazines in their “natural habitat.”

Six Breakout Models of Spring 2011

Model castings can be a black hole in the minds of the fashion press, since most occur very privately, behind closed doors. Luckily enough for us, however, casting director Andrew Weir of ACW Worldwide invited us to observe a massive casting for the Spring 2011 season.

Hopping at the chance to see models in their natural habitat, I made sure not to miss this event. Hundreds of girls lined the hallways of the Hudson Hotel, books and heels in hand. Inside the gorgeous Husdon Library, girls were photographed, walked, “scored,” and entered into ACW’s database in a flurry of business and buzz. To the untrained eye it was tough to distinguish which models were the best and which were the worst, until they walked. The best girls had strides long and fast, their hair flying in a self-generated breeze, among them Fashionista faves Ashley Smith, Ann Kenny, and Kirby Kenny.

Andrew Weir found six gems at his casting, sure to be the big stars of Spring 2011. It’s all about that je ne sais quoi for Mr. Weir, as well as finding “strong, beautiful, healthy, magnificent women.”
