A Look Back at the Top 5 Hair Trends of 2011

There were a lot of really strong hair trends that emerged in 2011. Some were exciting when they first popped up, and we even indulged in a few (like pink dip dye hair). However, like anything that gets too much exposure, we are now ready for the next new thing. Maybe we just have beauty ADHD.

While we’re still trying to wrap our heads around what might be big in 2012 (Wet, slick hair? Please…no.) here’s a reminder of what we (and Lauren Conrad) did to our heads in 2011. So let’s review and then move on.

Niche Fragrances, Including Angelina Jolie’s Scent, Get the Spotlight at the Elements Showcase

With so many celebrities rolling out fragrances and so many millions of consumers buying them, it’s easy to forget that creating a scent is actually an art form. It takes talent, skill, and inventiveness.

I was reminded of this fact earlier this week at Elements Showcase where an impressive collection of niche fragrance brands came together to present their diverse products. The bi-annual showcase that first premiered last January, is the vision of Jeff Lawson, owner of an events consultancy, Ulrich Lang, a former L’Oreal exec, and Frederick Bouchardy, founder of Joya, a creative collective specializing in fragrance.

The goal of the event was to connect fragrance designers with the media and buyers from top distributors like Barney’s and Henri Bendel, while at the same time, highlighting the artistry and craftsmanship of the exhibitors’ products.

Fashion News Roundup: Pippa Middleton Parties With Her Top Off, Kate Moss Gets an Exhibit, and Beyonce Can’t Get Anna Wintour to Dance

Pippa the Party Girl: Though we love us some Kate Middleton, it’s obvious that Pippa is the fun sister. The younger Middleton works as a party planner, and judging from a picture floating around the internet, she’s got plenty of partying experience under her belt. The image shows Pippa, wearing only a bra on top (her body looks ridic, natch), dancing with a shirtless boy. In the background, tables are filled with bottles of booze. {Huffington Post}

Knockoffs at Tiffany’s: Tiffany & Co. has a new collection of jewelry that resembles a thin twisted rope tied into a dainty bow. The company is usually the victim of counterfeit goods, but this time, it looks like Tiffany’s might be the culprit. The designs share a strikingly close resemblance to Brooklyn-based designer Kiel Mead’s collection of “Forget Me Not” accessories that he first produced in 2005. {UnBeige}

Kate Moss Gets an Exhibit in New York: Beginning on May 17th, the Danziger Projects gallery in New York will transform into a Kate Moss shrine. The exhibit, The Moss Portfolio and Other Stories, will feature 11 famous portraits of the model as well as images of Moss before she was famous. {ELLE}

Jessica Simpson Discusses Her Grueling Work Hours: In an interview with US Weekly, Simpson notes how hard she works for her fashion empire, stating: “I’m in the workroom in [L.A.'s] Westwood a few times a week from 11 to 7 at night.” {US Weekly}

GOOP Gives You Organic Skincare: We were totally going to do this roundup for Earth Day, but of course Gwyneth did it much better. Check out her comprehensive list of organic skincare brands. {GOOP}

Kate Middleton and Princess Di Love(d) the Same Handbag: Vogue Italy figured out that Kate has been carrying around Tod’s D-bag, which was named for Lady Di. Coincidence? We think not. {Vogue Italia}

Angelina Jolie: Actress, Mother, U.N. Goodwill Ambassador and Designer?

When you think of actresses-turned-designers Angelina Jolie’s name is not the first one that comes to mind. The Olsens? Sure. Emma Watson? That makes sense. But Jolie? Being Brad Pitt’s partner, mother of an ever-expanding rainbow brood and her work as a U.N. ambassador stand out over her style (not that she doesn’t look chic in those black drapey dresses).

Nevertheless, Jolie is designing a jewelry line, WWD is reporting. The Tourist actress has teamed up with former Asprey CEO Robert Procop to create a line of statement jewelry.

“These are pieces [Jolie] wears herself,” Procop told WWD of the collection, which includes “a pebble-size, pale green 353-carat beryl pendant, in a rose gold setting and worn on a chain of cushion shape beryl stones, and a graphic, tablet-shape 12.02-carat vivid green emerald ring set in rose gold.” Jolie was reportedly inspired by “ancient tablet engravings” when she designed the ring (she designed a similar piece for Pitt).

Models Move Into Milk

Last night, Milk feted the opening of Sante D’Orazio’s exhibition, “Barely Private”. We missed it for our last soccer game, but we’ll be heading west to catch the show before it closes January 5th. The exhibition, a follow up to his “A Private View” ten years ago, links back to his photo diary of the Read more →

Is the New: Brad/Angie & Nicole/Gwen

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are celebrity designers now. They’ve been working on a capsule collection for Asprey for a year, which means that in between UN conferences, orphanage visits in Africa and raising however many children they have, the not-human couple found time to design a $525 baby spoon. Their line, which aside from Read more →

Jolie Gucci

Two years ago we mentioned the making of a Gucci movie and wondered what, if any, role Tom Ford would play. This was pre-Single Man and pre-soon-to-launch-womenswear and we relished the idea of seeing Tom Ford playing Gucci-era Tom Ford on screen. At the time, only Ridley Scott was attached to the project, but late Read more →

A Bazaar Concession

Well, Harper’s Bazaar, just when I think I’m out…you pull me back in. I have made it entirely clear how I feel about a certain theme in the magazine (and subsequent coverlines.) But I did find our friend Bonnie Morrison‘s piece about drinking and the social aspects of a job in fashion last month incredibly Read more →

Ready for Your Close-Up?

We love contests, especially when we win them. I obsessively completed those Publishers Clearing House ones for years when I was a kid, completely convinced that maybe, just maybe, I was going to make my family rich. Well, this new one from Neutrogena may not pay off your college loans, but we think it would Read more →
