Ann Demeulemeester Fall 2012: Modern Joan of Arc

Ann Demeulemeester Fall 2012: Modern Joan of Arc

By now you’ve probably noticed that the Middle Ages are the leading theme of the season. The interesting part is seeing how each designer fantasizes about a decade over a millennium old.

In the case of Ann Demeulemesteer, she imagined dark (shocker) times where women soldiers wore leather trousers, loose, thigh-high flat boots, and plenty of draped moiré tops.

Oversized leather and boiled wool scarves were furiously wrapped around the neck. Paired with armpit-high gloves, these accessories reinforced a rough and tough feel, 10th century style – ideal for horseback riding in the middle of a cold night.

Brood Spring 2011: Serkan Sarier Impresses the Heavy Hitters

Stepping into Brood’s Spring 2011 presentation was like stepping into an elite club where only the fashion industries heavy-hitters were welcome. Sally Singer, Vera Wang, Zac Posen, and Mario Grauso were all in attendance.

Honestly, nothing less should have been expected. After all, Brood is is the brainchild of Serkan Sarier, a graduate from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp–one of the most prestigious fashion schools in the world. Some notable grads of the Royal Academy include Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, and Martin Margiela, so you can imagine what editors expect from an Antwerp scholar.

Nicolas Andreas Taralis Spring 2011: Life after Hedi and Cerruti

Nicolas Andreas Taralis Spring 2011: Life after Hedi and Cerruti

PARIS–After leaving his own label for two years and making an express appearance at Cerutti, Nicolas Andreas Taralis is in the spotlight again. And the former assistant to Hedi Slimane is in good hands: the grande dame Michèle Montagne (the matron of Ann Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann) is now looking after him.

His comeback collection contrasted severity and airiness, leather and paper-thin silk.

His Tuesday show at Palais de Tokyo felt like an organic evolution of last season’s designs: a similar play on contrasts, skinny belting on sturdier cuts, peaks of skin, sheer draping, all carried out on knotted wedges and boots, by male and female models.

“There wasn’t one obvious, direct inspiration, but more like a reflection of what I’ve liked for some time already,” Taralis told us backstage after the show.

5 Pairs of Shoes That Are Worth the Investment

I can’t tell you exactly how my obsession with shoes began (I SWEAR it has nothing to do with Sex and the City), but I can tell you the first time a pair really blew my mind.

A couple of years back, a friend of mine wore these Burberry studded platform sandals from the Fall 2007 runway. They were sexy, slightly tough, and managed to make even the simplest outfit chic. Even if I could have afforded to buy these beauties, they were completely sold out–probably due to the fact that editors and celebrities everywhere were spotted in them.

While I’ve never splurged on a pair of designer shoes, I’ve made a little promise to myself: When I land my first full-time job, I will treat myself to one…even if it takes a few months of saving. Although that day hasn’t arrived, I’ve compiled a list of shoes that I think are worth the extreme price-tags. The picks might not all be classics, but they’re so special that you’ll surely wear them again and again.

PS: I still scour eBay every once in a while hoping to come across my Burberry dream shoes in a size 37.

Fashion Is Fun

Let’s Play Dress Up With Lara

< ? $caption[1] = "Giles
If you have a body like Lara’s, you don’t cover it up. But since it’s not appropriate to be naked at your wedding, the next best thing is a corset. Giles celebrated curves and flesh with a spring show that offered up a number of these pieces. This dress was by far the most dramatic, and we think it would make just as great a statement coming down the aisle as it did the runway.” ?>

< ? $caption[2] = "Dolce and Gabbana
Lara doesn’t exactly seem like the type to wear a mock turtleneck, but with some sexy black lingerie underneath, this exquisite lace number could work.” ?>

< ? $caption[3] = "Haider Ackermann
When Steff suggested this dress, everyone gasped in agreement. It’s the perfect long sheath, and it just might be our top choice. We even love it in the black.” ?>
< ? $slide[4] = "http://fashionista.com/2010/01/21/lanvinlara.png" ?>
< ? $caption[4] = "Lanvin
We’re not sure whether Lara will go long or short, but if she’s leaning towards the latter, then this nude dress could be a beautiful and unconventional option.” ?>

< ? $caption[5] = "Threeasfour
Lara would look like a walking Calder in this dress. Perhaps she could wear this to the reception party–it would have so much movement when she dances!” ?>
< ? $slide[6] = "http://fashionista.com/2010/01/21/diorlara.png" ?>
< ? $caption[6] = "Dior
This delicate, wispy dress is what wedding dreams are made of. It screams romantic.” ?>
< ? $slide[7] = "http://fashionista.com/2010/01/21/puccilara.png" ?>
< ? $caption[7] = "Pucci
If Lara and David are considering a destination wedding, then perhaps she should also consider this dress. Pucci’s breezy gown is well-suited for a sandy beach and blue skies.” ?>
< ? $slide[8] = "http://fashionista.com/2010/01/21/valentinolara.png" ?>
< ? $caption[8] = "Valentino
Masterpiece. As Rachel Zoe would say, this dress is \”stupid beautiful.\”" ?>
< ? $slide[9] = "http://fashionista.com/2010/01/21/anndlara.png" ?>
< ? $caption[9] = "Ann Demeulemeester
For a more minimal look, this stark white, long skirt and jacket would be nice. And we’re loving the cleavage.” ?>
< ? $slide[10] = "http://fashionista.com/2010/01/21/versacelara.png" ?>
< ? $caption[10] = "Versace
If Lara’s feeling sexy, she should go for this. As Steff says, \”It’s sexy all over while feigning purity.\” Plus, it’s sure to show off her best assets.” ?>

Curiouser & Curiouser

It feels like we’ve been waiting ages for the release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. But before Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter hit the screen in March, dresses inspired by the story will hit Printemps in February. In honor of Lewis Carroll’s story and Tim Burton’s film, the Parisian department store’s Read more →

Feathers Trickle Down

There were a few feathers in February, mostly of the rock n’ roll variety. Black and brown ones peppered Ann Sofie Back‘s collection while William Rast decorated his punky cowboy jeans with white. They were used best in Ann Demeulemeester‘s elaborate headdresses. Meanwhile, they’ve translated rather funny for fall. We embrace feathers in general – Read more →

People We Like

Love Letter #29375

Dear Rihanna, I don’t know much about your music. Mostly because I tend to pick up on music from the boys in my life and yours aren’t exactly their go-to tunes. But you’re on my radar (because I don’t live under a rock) and I’m digging your sartorial choices. I know you have a red Read more →

Add Raf to the List

Our guesses were off, neither Wang nor Proenza are forging ahead with ad campaigns in these tough economic times – but Raf Simons is. His first ever ad, following the likes of Zac Posen, Rodarte and Derek Lam, will debut in magazines this fall and showcase his eponymous menswear line. He’ll also be opening two Read more →
