Reasons why Nicki Minaj might’ve felt more at home at Betsey Johnson yesterday than she did at Carolina Herrera:

- Her seatmate, the fabulously unconventional Lynn Yaeger (instead of buttoned-up Anna Wintour).
- Her blue afro, sure to get the stamp of approval from Johnson, who stocked the gift bags with scented fuchsia hair extensions.
- Her song “Fly”, which played as the opening music, and drew a humble laugh from the singer.
- And, of course, the clothes. If there’s a designer for Minaj other than, say, The Blonds, it’s Betsey Johnson. Last night, the hip-hop star’s outrageous rainbow ensemble helped her stand out from the audience, but the models? Not so much. Which is kinda great, because as much as we love surprising celebrity show choices, it’s also nice to see fashion week pairings that just make sense.

Nicki Minaj sure is turning up in the weirdest places this week. After a surprise appearance at Prabal, here she is wearing a crafty pom-pom dress sitting next to Anna…at Carolina Herrera. Somehow we don’t really see Nicki being into any of the looks at Herrera. And what do you think she and Anna talked about? Read more »

Karlie on Underage Models: Karlie Kloss, backstage at Jason Wu, talks about feeling old at 19 and starting out at 15, and shares her thoughts on under-16 models. {The Cut}

Anna Wintour’s Shoe Influence: Florence and the Machine guitarist Rob Ackroyd once had dinner with Anna Wintour, which resulted in him being forced to wear a pair of Louboutins (men’s ones, obviously) to the Met Ball that he would not have worn otherwise. {Vogue UK}

“I had all my editors telling me they’ve lost their deposits, they have no more money, and what should they do? That seemed to me a great opportunity for us to help…It was adorable. It was about the industry helping each other. It was a very small thing, but it felt good. We’re not going to be defeated…I do think it’s important to make the point that as awful as adversity is, it is important to be positive and think about how you can help and what you can do. It can have results. It is so easy to moan and to complain a lot, but being positive and proactive is by far the most rewarding way to be. Do I sound too Pollyanna? I really believe that.

Anna Wintour showing an unusually emotional and optimistic side in the New York Times piece exploring the fashion industry in the wake of 9/11. This article actually brought tears to our eyes–a must-read, written from the perspective of the designers affected during Fashion Week September 2001.

Ever since the US Open began Monday, something very funny has been happening over at WWD. The industry newspaper–dedicated to reporting the comings and goings of the fashion and beauty world–has been talking grand slams and sports stats.

We’ve been noticing tennis-related posts popping up on all sorts of fashion-related sites. In the past few days, NY Times has run a piece dissecting female players’ hairstyles, WWD has reported on Ryan Harrison’s “brat attack”, NOWNESS premiered a dramatic, smoke-filled video starring tennis A-listers taking swings, and Vogue has run several tennis-themed features including a profile on the sports’ newest stars and a look at Maria Sharapova’s fashion cred.

Yes, some of these have been legitimately fashion-related, but it’s still a whole lot more industry buzz than has been given to other sports (Can you imagine a football-related headline on WWD!?)

Let’s take a look at the evolution of the fashion industry’s love affair with tennis.

Forbes just released their list of the World’s Most Powerful Women and, as expected, Anna Wintour made the cut. What is surprising: she’s only #69. Though it’s expected that politicians would top an editor (Angela Merkel was #1 and Hillary Clinton is #2), we were a little shocked that Lady Gaga came it at #11 (the highest non-politician or businesswoman on the list) and Beyoncé was #18.

But back to Anna.

In case you haven’t heard, @CondeElevator is an anonymous Twitter account that chronicles the most ridiculous conversations overheard in the Conde Nast building’s fabled elevators. From lowly interns to infamous editrixes, no one is left out and the account already has over 55,000 followers and counting.

When we first heard about this Twitter spy, who is presumably a Conde Nast employee, we thought it was a pretty risky move–there was no way the higher ups at Conde would be pleased about this. However, the publishing company has recently spoken out about the account and their feelings about an employee putting their shit on blast may not be what we’d expected.

Will we be seeing Glee stars on the cover of Vogue soon? According to the Page Six, the Glee kids will act as spokespersons for Fashion’s Night Out on September 8, appearing at stores across the country.

Anna Wintour‘s daughter, Bee Shaffer, is an Associate Managing Producer in LA for Ryan Murphy’s production company (which produces Glee) and supposedly brokered the deal. A rep for Fashion’s Night Out didn’t necessarily shoot down the rumor, but instead gave the Post this statement: “We don’t comment on rumors.”

It’s not often that one gets an invitation to hang out with a legendary designer at his country home, but that’s exactly what happened yesterday when a group of beauty editors was welcomed into Oscar de la Renta‘s quiet spread in Connecticut.

The occasion? The launch of the first perfume developed completely under his control since the house won back its fragrance license last year after a long, expensive battle with former partners. Most perfume launches don’t enjoy such a personal and heartfelt celebration, but this one was particularly special to Oscar, his family, and the company. While Esprit d’Oscar, a reinterpretation of the original Oscar scent was sent into the world with an appropriate amount of fanfare, the new fragrance, called “Live in Love” is obviously the designer’s statement to the world of beauty that he’s back.

We will admit it: we still love Project Runway. From Heidi’s short skirts and occasional whacked-out hairstyles to the ever-entertaining Michael Kors, it sucks us in every season (even though we pretend to be too cool for it.) But the main reason we keep coming back? Tim Gunn. We can listen to that man and his spectacular vocabulary forever. We think he is a nice person generally, but he can definitely have a sharp tongue and often has no filter when he speaks. We support this wholeheartedly.

To mark the beginning of Project Runway‘s ninth season, we bring you a round-up of Tim‘s best quotes ever, in no particular order (And no, we did not include, “Make it work.”)

Kudos to Grace Coddington! The beloved Vogue creative director just sold her memoir to Random House for a rumored $1.2 million, the Observer reports.

This means it’s really happening and also further discredits a recent Page Six article that reported Anna Wintour was the one shopping around a memoir. It said Coddington had “pushed the project aside” once Jay Fielden, with whom she was originally writing the book, was appointed as editor-in-chief at Town & Country. Instead, the book will apparently be co-written by current Vogue writer Michael Roberts.
