The Best Magazine Covers of 2011

Dont judge a book by its cover… Unless it’s a magazine, in which case, sometimes the cover is the deciding factor of whether or not to buy the mag altogether.

The best covers of 2011 returned to a new naturalism and a fun aesthetic, like the Lara Stone T cover we’re still drooling over, pictured at left. Sure, there’s still room for artifice in fashion (see: Stella Tennant on Vogue Italia), but 2011 was a year for reflecting on natural beauties, incredible models, and stellar photography.

After toiling over hundred of covers, we’re bringing you “The Best” according to us. Did we forget your favorite? Let us know in the comments.

Fashion News Roundup: Male Models Deliver Madonna’s Perfume to Editors, Tel Aviv Hosts Its First Fashion Week, and Kim Kardashian Upsets Australia

Madonna’s Perfume Delivered by Male Models: Madge apparently sent some studly male models to hand-deliver her new Truth or Dare fragrance to beauty editors in NYC. Sadly, our notably male-deprived office was not included in this gesture – leading me to believe that Madonna is in on some Mean Girls-esque, four-for-you,-Glenn-Coco-and-none-for-Gretchen-Weiners reverse-psychology scheme to subconsciously make us want her perfume even more. Damn you, Madonna, and your sneaky mind games! {Telegraph}

RIP Master Embroiderer Francois Lesage: The Frenchman who led the embroidery atelier that served Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, and Bill Blass, has died at age 82. Lesage was known for being a true couture artisans, attaching every single bead by hand – a tradition that is now only utilized by a handful of designers. {NY Times}

An Account of Tel Aviv’s Very First Fashion Week: Lucky Mag contributer Ray Siegel reflects on Tel Aviv’s first-ever fashion week, hosted by Roberto Cavalli. Apparently each favorite look was immediately followed by avid applause – guess that’s faster than waiting to read the reviews! {Lucky}

The Kardashian’s Officially Launch Their Sears Kollection in NYC–And It’s Already Selling Out

The Kardashian sisters officially launched their Kardashian Kollection for Sears at their campaign photographer Annie Liebovitz’s studio in the meatpacking district Tuesday night. And while I, and most of the guests at the press preview, had gotten soaked through thanks to an unending downpour, Kim, Kourtney and Khloe looked impeccably coiffed and, yes, chic in their Sears’ togs–not to mention enviably dry.

Since the Kardashians are a family that sticks together, mama Kris was there too–looking super hot in that black polka-dot sheer Stella McCartney–and so was Kourtney’s beau Scott Disick.

The sisters were on publicist lock-down and not talking to any reporters (save the NYT, sad face), so we happily chatted with Bruno Schiavi–the designer who worked with the sisters to produce their Sears collection.

Kim, Kourtney and Khloe might be sisters by they’ve got different styles. “Kim’s Hollywood, Kourtney’s the bohemian and Khloe’s the rocker,” Schiavi explained, “and we tried to blend them together.”

And it seems they blend well. Even though the collection has only been on Sears’ shelves for less than a week, items from the collection have already sold out–before the official launch.

Stormy Weather: Our Favorite Tempestuous Editorials and Campaigns

Storms, like the one that’s currently headed for New York and just cancelled my Montauk trip, can be scary and sometimes even dangerous, so everyone be careful this weekend! That being said, they can also make for intriguing backdrops and themes in fashion editorials and ad campaigns. You’d be hard-pressed to find an Annie Leibovitz-lensed photograph that takes place outdoors without some ominous-looking clouds. Somehow, they can make any subject look so much more captivating and dramatic.

So, on this rainy, gloomy day, we’ve decided to round up some of our favorite storm-inspired fashion photographs. Enjoy and please be safe!

Check Out Nike’s Full ‘Make Yourself’ Ad Campaign Shot by Annie Leibovitz

Reports surfaced in June that Nike had chosen Annie Leibovitz to photograph the fall 2011 ad campaign and we just got a hold of all the images. The campaign stars seven elite female athletes–Nike’s “Make Yourself” team. Nike launched “Make Yourself” last year with the intention of inspiring and motivating women to “achieve their goals and become the best ‘versions’ of themselves.” It would basically be difficult not to feel motivated by these images of impossibly physically fit ladies working out in sports bras, including USA track and field Olympian Allyson Felix, Chinese tennis player Li Na, Algerian-French dancer Sofia Boutella, British hurdler Perri Shakes-Drayton, Russian-born tennis star Maria Sharapova, USA goalkeeper Hope Solo and Australian surfer Laura Enever. Like, if I had a membership to a gym, I would definitely go work out at it right now. Maybe I’ll just download one of Nike’s iPhone workouts instead. Click through for all the images.

Fashion News Roundup: Annie Leibovitz for Nike, FHM Apologizes to Andrej Pejic and a Dry Shampoo Website

Annie Leibovitz Shoots Nike Women’s Ad: The Nike Make Yourself campaign started last year as a girl power type promotion for women’s athleticism and sportswear; this year, they tapped Leibovitz’s recognizable epic photography for the ads, which star several female athletes including Maria Shirapova, dancer Sofia Boutella, and surfer Laura Enever. {WWD}

Jill Abramson Named New York Times Executive Editor: Abramson has been managing editor since 2003 and is now, with today’s replacement of Bill Keller, the first ever female executive editor of the newspaper. {NYTimes}

FHM Apologizes to Andrej Pejic: The men’s mag named the gender bending model the 98th Sexiest Woman… but also called him ‘thing’ in a truly insensitive bit of copy. The piece has since been taken down and an apology was issued, although it’s honestly a little pathetic given the offense. {Styleite}

Investigating The Hipster: High-brow literary journal n+1‘s investigation of the rise and fall of the Hipster started with a panel at The New School and has culminated in a text entitled “What Was the Hipster?: A Sociological Investigation.” You can purchase it here for $10. {The Moment}

Wedding Bandz: Katy Perry and Russell Brand are married now. Katy wore Elie Saab and the wedding gift bags included custom “Katy” and “Russell” Silly Bandz. {Styleite}

A Gap in Inventory: Leave it to Racked to track down the highly anticipated Pierre Hardy for Gap wedges. Unfortunately, the results of their NYC findings were pretty dismal. Apparently, Fifth Avenue and 54th Street only received five pairs (all of which are probably gone by now). Times Square had “a few sizes” and 34th street had nothing. All stores are hopefully awaiting more shipments. {Racked NY}
