The music industry hit the red blue carpet last night in Las Vegas for the Billboard Music Awards. We suspect the location may have affected many stars’ choice of outfits, because there were a whole lot of sheer and slashed looks–not to mention a serious lack of pants. Also side ass is back! Last night punky pop singer Avril Lavigne showed her Abbey Dawn collection of “Music is My BF” tees, “Hell Yeah” wedge booties, and “Heartcore” dresses at the Metropolitan Pavilion as part of Style 360′s collection of shows during New York fashion week.
But the show wasn’t about the mall-rat-ready clothes. It was about the Kardashian’s. Kylie Jenner, 14, one of the youngest members of the Kardashian crew walked in the show (despite the CFDA’s guidelines suggesting models be at least 16), and most of her famous family came out to support her. Kourtney, Kim, and Kim’s new husband Kris Humphries were all there. So was Kylie’ half-brother Brody Jenner, who also happens to date the “designer.” (I guess music isn’t Avril’s BF?).
Once the paparazzi scrum receded and the flashbulbs stopped popping, the Kardashian’s cheered their sister on like any normal family as she walked the runway. They screamed, took photos, and when she closed the show, threw a bouquet at her. And when the show was over, their security swooped in, and the family was escorted backstage, trailed by paparazzi–a not-normal family once again.

Kendall Jenner may have been afraid to do runway, but Kylie (left) is apparently welcoming the challenge. The Kardashians‘ younger half-sister will be making her New York Fashion Week debut next Monday at Style 360-Metropolitan Pavilion, where Avril Lavigne plans to send her Abbey Dawn collection down the runway, WWD reports. To connect the dots: Avril’s boyfriend is Kylie’s half brother (and former Hills star) Brody Jenner. They’re such a tight-knit family!
The only problem: Kylie just turned 14, which is well below the CFDA-imposed 16-year age minimum for runway models. Since February of this year, when these guidelines were announced, it’s been a gradual adjustment for some–having lead to a recent request by the CFDA that designers start carding models at their shows. We reached out to Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA, and here’s what he had to say:
The CFDA Health Initiative guidelines are suggested recommendations put forth for the industry. The latest version has been distributed widely. We are not in a position to police or enforce these recommendations. We can only hope that they are followed and taken seriously and are happy that so many in our industry are acting responsible.
So, should Kylie be karded?
When celebrities like Avril Lavigne, Jessica Simpson and Kellan Lutz have their own lines, it’s only a matter of time until someone like Gaga–a self-professed fashion nut (and columnist!)–would get one.
According to Grazia, Lady Gaga will be teaming up with none other than her fashion-designing little sis Natali Germanotta (aka Baby Gaga), who WWD reported last week is up for a gig designing costumes for an Off-Broadway production.
But you may have to hang up your hypothetical meat dresses and lobster hats–Grazia reports the line will be “relatively normal and wearable.”
Avril Lavigne will show her line Abbey Dawn at New York Fashion Week next month. We’ll let that sink in a little for a minute.
The punk-pop princess is set to expand Abbey Dawn, which up until now has included t-shirts, hoodies and jewelry (decorated with skulls and lightening bolts, natch), and is sold exclusively at Kohls. This year, however, there will be even more pink-graffiti-print to go around. The line will include dresses, denim, skirts, footwear, handbags, wallets, purses and eyewear. And, just so the sk8ter bois don’t feel left out, Lavigne (or her team) will be producing a full men’s collection as well.
