Fashion’s Night Out: The Show

Fashion’s Night Out: The Show

Last night, I got a taste of what New York Fashion Week would be like if it was produced by Anna Wintour. Every show would begin on time. Only the best of the best designers would be invited to participate. And the music would be very, very good.

That pretty much sums up Fashion’s Night Out: The Show, which took place last night at the courtyard in Lincoln Center. Over a 1,000 looks–styled by Tabitha Simmons and Edward Enninful–stomped down a twisting runway that must have been a quarter of a mile long in total. Everyone–from Alex Wang to Balenciaga–was featured. Simmons and Enninful chose to style the models as they were originally styled, meaning Prada‘s girls got boufants, and Balenciaga’s wore pastel eyebrows. It was unoriginal, but with so many looks, understandable. Pretty much every model working today walked, including favorites of mine like Dree Hemingway and Ashley Smith. Gisele even made an appearance near the end, shortly after NERD performed in the center of the venue.

The paper program was masterful, save for a weirdly photo-shopped Lara Stone on the cover. (A friend said that her waist “looked tinier than Karly’s–creepy.”) Every single clothing credit was included, which is a two day-long job on its own.

All in all, it was a successful event. Especially for those who hadn’t seen these looks come down the runway last February.

Fashion’s Night Out: Where The Major Designers Will Be

Fashion’s Night Out is two weeks from tomorrow! There is more going on than we can even wrap our heads around. Having trouble deciding where you want to go and who you want to see the most?

Well, if you’re interested in catching a peak of one of your favorite designers, here’s a roundup of where some of the biggest and the best will be on September 10. We’ve excluded most of the people we’ve already reported on. Also, it’s almost safe to say that if someone isn’t on this list, they will probably be at Barneys.

Michael Kors
Michael will be at his lifestyle store on Madison and 61st in New York City. He will be joined by TONY Award winner Idina Menzel, whom Michael will accompany on a selection of songs. Michael will also make an appearance nearby at Bloomingdale’s 59th street, where the “World of Michael” will be created to kick off a new Michael Kors handbag shop-in-shop.

Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy will be kicking off FNO and his brand’s 25th anniversary at Macy’s Herald Square. As we’ve reported, Macy’s will house “The Ultimate Tailgate Party” as inspired by Tommy’s most recent ad campaign. Tommy will be accompanied by Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren. He will also make an appearance at his Fifth Avenue store, where shoppers can have their purchases personalized with an exploding monogram while they shop, listen to DJ Toddlerone and drink up.

A Letter to le Tour de France: A Podium Girl Make-Over Is In Order

Dear Tour de France Organizers,

First of all, we would like to congratulate Alberto Contador on winning this prestigious race. Truly an amazing achievement. It was an exciting competition this year, even though some of us may have been forced to watch against our will.

However, we would like to offer some sartorial suggestions for next year’s Tour. While we don’t really love the tight spandex worn by the riders, we completely understand the necessity and functionality of this garb. Our concern is not the cyclists.

Indeed, it is the so-called “podium girls,” or those who doll out the awards each evening. We understand that they are a long-standing Tour tradition. We will avoid NASCAR comparisons and let our colleagues over at Jezebel critique the inherent chauvinism.

The outfits that these women wear are absolutely unacceptable.

Fashion News Roundup: Daria for YSL, Kate for Isabel Marant and Plastic Balenciaga

Which came first Daria or the necklace?: YSL’s Fall 2010 campaign was just released. Stefano Pilati seems to have styled Daria after the necklace she’s wearing at the Hôtel de Clermont-Tonnerre. {YSL}

I am a plastic bag:
The celebrity-beloved Balenciaga Motorcycle bag has been knocked off for ages (we may have had one in high school). But now, this Japanese company is producing a plastic version in neon colors with weird bobbles, covered in drawings of Karl Lagerfeld, birds and Vogue logos. Will this be 2010′s version of those jelly Hermes knock-offs from 10 years ago? {Nylon}

How To Make Red, White, and Blue Look Chic (Or at Least Cute)

It’s Fourth of July weekend. That means no work, the beach, picnics, fireworks, family, and friends. But it’s also a celebration of the birth of the United States. What better way to recognize our independence than to wear the national colors?

Oh, yes, we recognize that red, white, and blue is not the easiest combination to pull off. So we’re offering some ideas that’ll keep you from looking like our favorite kook, Katy Perry.

Our Latest Obsession: Ikat Print

Though the tribal print trend seems to be heading out the door, there is something so cute and chic about the ikat print specifically that makes us want to wear it in as many ways as possible. It’s been on a few runways recently, including as Dries Van Noten, Gucci, Marc and Balenciaga. Our love for ikat blossomed even more yesterday when we checked out Cynthia Vincent’s upcoming Resort 2011 accessories collection, which was full of the colorful print. See above for our inspiration and click through for some more accessible examples that you can buy right now.

Could Balenciaga Sue BeyondtheRack.com For Selling Unauthorized Merchandise?

Legendary Vintage Fashion Auctioneer Kerry Taylor on Madame Grès, Princess Di, and Why She Won’t Loan Out Dresses

Ever wonder where great vintage comes from? In some cases, it surfaces at auctions, where dealers can acquire trunk loads of frayed 1930s chiffon dresses for pennies against the final retail price.

But there’s another side to clothing auctions, one in which London-based fashion auctioneer Kerry Taylor specializes—museum-quality vintage and haute couture.
