Are Brands Overusing the Word Heritage?

Leah’s at the Pitti Uomo tradeshow in Florence this week, and undoubtedly she’s come across several “heritage” brands at the hundreds of booths shilling their earnestly designed shoes, jackets and jeans to the world’s top menswear buyers and editors.

The term “heritage” is commonplace in menswear—and beyond—thanks to the fashionable revival of traditional English brands (Barbour, Belstaff) and Made-in-America labels (Alden, Carhartt).

But with the introduction of Portland, Oregon-based Pendleton Woolen Mills’ new “heritage collection” last week, we wondered: has the use of the word “heritage” reached a saturation point?

Fashion News Roundup: Gwyneth Paltrow Debuts the First Hedi Slimane YSL Handbag, Moises De La Renta Sounds Off and Where’s Kate Upton?

Where’s Kate? Upton, that is. The busty blonde was not part of IMG’s spring 2013 show package. Is she not walking or did she nab an exclusive? {Fashion Copious} Moises de la Renta would like you to stop asking him for tickets to the Oscar de la Renta show. He apparently expressed this with a Read more →

Virtual Tour: Pitti Uomo

Virtual Tour: Pitti Uomo

I spent last week in Florence, Italy covering Pitti Uomo and Pitti W, the men’s and women’s trade shows known best for translating high-fashion trends to retail. You won’t find middle-of-the-road brands at this event: Each label is either steeped in tradition, or starting a revolution in its specific category. (Whether that’s men’s brogues, outerwear, bow ties, or hats.)

When I wasn’t scurrying off to press previews, runway shows, or, um, blogging, I was floating from booth to booth, checking out what the vendors had on offer. Here’s a bit of what I saw. (Tomorrow, I’ll reveal my new street style icon, who I found at the fair.)

Fashion News Roundup: Fashion Tarot Cards, Magnetic Lingerie and Temperley for Barbour

Celebs Heart Erdem: British designer Erdem is quickly become a go-to for celebs for red carpets and press appearances. At least the ones with good taste, like Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, SJP, Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams. We approve. {Telegraph UK}

MaxMara’s Rubik’s Contest: Want to win a super cozy MaxMara coat and potentially a free trip to Milan while you’re at it? All you have to do is download this iApp game. It’s called Decode the Cube and from what we understand, it’s like a rubik’s cube with pictures of models in coats. Sounds fun! And you only have until November 21 to win, so get downloading! {MaxMara’s Facebook}

Fashion Tarot Cards: “Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project” is a new exhibit arriving at New York City’s private National Arts Club. We’ve already asked a psychic to tell us what’s in store for our favorite fashion designers. Now, fashion designers including Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld, as well as Terence Koh, Terry Richardson and others have each been chosen to reinterpret a tarot card. Apparently, Jacobs’ Knight of Pentacles card features a model flashing her bare crotch. {StyleList}

Shoes You can Print? Dutch shoe designer Marloes ten Bhömer is reinventing the shoe making process by using 3-D printing technology. “To create each shoe, the printer uses a 3D model of a person’s foot to lay down successive layers of powdered material (in this case two photopolymers), which are then cured using ultraviolet rays.” We’re confused too. {Ecouterre}

These are a few of my favorite things: The New York Botanical Garden’s gift shop is full of cute items (great for Holiday gifts) and they’ve decided to ask bloggers to pick their favorite things and share them in a new series for Plant Talk (NYBG’s blog). Check out what our very own Lauren Sherman thinks you should get for your garden-loving friends. {Plant Talk}

Hamish Gets Wild

Confession: I haven’t read a full article in American Vogue in a very, very long time. This weekend, I stopped in the street – seriously – to read Hamish Bowles’ story about three days spent in Utah’s desert. It feels like almost every issue of Vogue has a green bent at this point, and for Read more →
