Narciso Rodriguez and Simon Doonan Toast Sharon Socol’s New Photography Book

Being the wife of a Barneys New York executive certainly has its perks–like, say, snagging your well-connected husband’s ‘plus one’ invite to industry insider events that most people only dream of attending.

Sharon Socol–wife of Howard Socol, who served as Barneys’s CEO from 2001 to 2008–used that exclusive access to her advantage and then some. Toting a 35mm loaded with black and white film, Socol, an avid photographer since age seven, snapped behind-the-scenes photos of fashion shows, parties, and some of the industry’s most legendary characters.

Recently, she compiled those photos into a book titled Plus One: An Outsider’s Photographic Journey Into the World of Fashion–the release of which garnered a crowd of fashion’s elite last night on Barneys’s 9th floor.

Barneys Fashion Director Tomoko Ogura Shares Her Fashion Week Diary With Us

After Amanda Brooks stepped down as Barneys’ fashion director last May, 29-year-old-Tomoko Ogura (yes, she’s only 29!) quietly filled her spot. Ogura had previously served as the fashion director for Barneys CO-OP, and having started working at Barneys in 2005, she’s one of the few staffers to have carried over from the pre-Mark Lee days.

And now she’s starting to come into the spotlight a bit. So we asked her to chronicle her New York fashion week for us. Here’s what she saw.

Famed Perfumer Frederic Malle On His Ability to Translate Scents Into Images

n Friday, French perfumer Frederic Malle cut through the evening’s fog to make an appearance at his longtime home, Barneys New York.

“I see Barneys as sort of my second wife,” he told us of the store. And just like any good husband, Malle has done something special for his better half: He’s retooled the bottles of some of his most famous fragrances to include his abstract sketches on their labels.

Post-Sandy Retail Report: Stores Take a Financial Hit, Barneys Reopens and Looting In the South Street Seaport

As Hurricane Sandy moves on and New Yorkers are left to clean up the city, the full extent of the damage is becoming increasingly clear. One particularly hard hit area, at least fiscally, was retail, both in the city and beyond as stores were forced to close their doors to brace for the storm. And now reports of looting are starting to surface.

Fashion News Roundup: More Lady Gaga Fame Ads, Urban Outfitters May Have Bed Bugs and DvF is a Granny (Again!)

Sergio Rossi Creative Director Francesco Russo on How a Woman’s Psychology Changes When She Wears High Heels

Barney’s NY knows that the recipe for a great evening involves shopping for shoes, charitable cause, and, of course, tasty cocktails. We told you earlier this week about the launch of their brand new co-ed shoe floor, and the festivity continued last night with a soiree celebrating Sergio Rossi’s fall collection.

The shoes were displayed like art (the whole shoe floor feels kinda like a museum–only you can touch all you want) with strappy Sergio Rossi sculptures on pedestals surrounded by bouquets of flowers. The guests were in Instagram overdrive thanks to Barney’s Perfect Pairs campaign (as in #perfectpairs), which supports the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and its Americans for Marriage Equality Program. The hardest part of the evening was trying to crop a pair of super tall, show-stopping over-the-knee boots with intricate cut-outs into the square frame (#instafail).

Though Simon Doonan was there, the man of the hour was Sergio Rossi’s charming creative director Francesco Russo. We managed to steal him away from the likes of Rachel Chandler-Guinness and Kenza Fourati for a quick chat. Read on to find out what the designer had to say about trends, inspirations and why a femme fatale is only as good as her shoes.
