Betsey Johnson’s main collection may be shuttered forever, but that hasn’t stopped the most energetic 70-year-old on the planet from expanding her fashion legacy. After Steve Madden invested in the company, they decided to take the Betsey brand down a few price points and focus on what she arguably does best–dresses.
Here’s a first look at her new lower-priced dress line.
Day six of New York Fashion Week started for us with a very fancy presentation by The Row uptown, complete with a flickering fireplace and luxe fabrications, and ended at Betsey Johnson’s runway show featuring models using champagne bottles as free weights and Carmen Electra in the front row. So, you know, we’ve seen a lot today.
New York is unreasonably cold right now. Like impending-blizzard-freeze-your-Rag & Bone-covered-butt-off cold. This is exactly why we, and fashionistas nowhere near New York, are praising the fashion gods (more like IMG & various PR people) for the glorious amount of New York fashion week shows livestreaming this week. We wrangled 89 shows (89!) and presentations to tune into over the course of the next week…with even more coming in! The best part? Betsey Johnson’s company announced yesterday that it would be filing for bankruptcy and closing its stores, putting a rumored 350 employees out of work. But Betsey is not going down without a fight: Her brand and aesthetic will live on.
We can still expect to see Betsey cartwheeling down the runway at New York fashion week come September, WWD is reporting. The designer is staying on as creative director of the brand, and will continue designing sportswear, though, as mentioned yesterday, the emphasis will be on her more moderately priced Betsey Johnson line, which has sold much better than her runway collection. WWD reports that aobut 75% of the spring merch will be moderately-priced, and the rest “editorial- and designer-range pieces.”

Betsey Johnson’s Fall 2012 collection transformed the Beatlemania culture of the early sixties into Betseymania. You can always count on Betsey Johnson for a self-referential theme.
This collection mixed sixties staples like houndstooth mini skirts, pageboy hats, and mod prints, with Betsey’s signature prom girl dresses. There were a few neon skirt suits that recalled a Cher Horowitz on acid, which I’m still undecided on. The show closed with a parade of models dressed as scantily clad cheerleaders, marching behind Betsey, her daughter Lulu, and her granddaughter.
