Fashion News Roundup: Calvin Klein’s Boyfriend Gets Busted, John Varvatos Shuns Fashion Star‘s Shenanigans, and Bill Cunningham is Honored by Carnegie Hall

Calvin Klein’s Baby Boyfriend Drama: Twenty-two-year-old ex-porn star Nick Gruber, who shares a suspiciously similar hairstyle and skin smoothness with his 69 y.o. designer beau, was arrested yesterday on charges of assault, resisting arrest, and cocaine possession– in that order. It seems the law has come between him and his Calvin. {NY Post}

UGG Opening New NYC Flagship: After the apocalypse, the only things left will be rats, Cher, and Uggs. The fuzzy boot retailer, which continues to expand against all the fashion faux pas odds, will open a 2,500-sq-foot store in NYC’s Meatpacking District this fall. {WWD}

John Varvatos Doesn’t Fancy Fashion Star Theatrics: The Fashion Star mentor isn’t very into the ridiculous shenanigans that explode onstage during the clothing presentations on his reality show. “If the show continues to go on,” he’d apparently like to see less of these distractions. Hold on– if? IF?? But what on Earth would we do on Tuesday nights without this glorious, fashion forward, relevant celebrity-driven concoction of a series? I can’t bear the thought. {BuzzFeed}

Fashionista’s Week in Review: New York Fashion Week is Dunzo, J.Crew Teams Up With Manolo Blahnik, and Occupy Wall Street Fails to Disrupt Calvin Klein Show

New York Fashion Week Finally Wrapped Up: We saw lots of well-dressed people, random celebrities, underaged models, and, of course, beautiful clothes.

The Grammys Happened:… and (gasp!) celebrities attended, wearing clothes and everything!

Adele Won Six Grammys, Covers March Vogue: While we wish the Fashion Bible had opted for a full-legnth shot of the singer, we will co-sign on her glorious cleavage, featured prominently for all the world to see. In short: Girl, woooork!

Whitney Houston Dies: One of the greatest voices of our generation (read: ever), Whitney Houston passed away in her Beverly Hills Hilton hotel room last weekend. She was 48 years old. She will be sorely missed by all.

The Indestructible Bill Cunningham Is Hit by SUV, Keeps On Shooting (He’s Fine!)

This just in: Proving that fashion week is not for the faint of heart, Bill Cunningham apparently just got hit by an SUV outside of Reed Krakoff! But don’t worry, he walked away without a scratch. Still, we gasped in horror upon reading the following tweet: “@WmagJane: Bill Cunningham hit by SUV. He’s ok @misternewton An SUV hit Bill Cunningham outside Reed Krakoff – he’s ok. He’s walking- still shooting!”

Phew! And, of course he’s still shooting.

Alexander Wang Fall 2012: 90s Supermodels (Gisele! Shalom!) and a Glossy Sheen

After hearing about the makeup look from pro Diane Kendal backstage at the Alexander Wang show yesterday, I was about to tweet: “Someday Alex Wang will put his girls in a strong red lip—but today isn’t the day.” Yep, same old grungy Wang girl. Ho hum. But then a colleague said to me, “Look, Gisele is over there.”

The day quickly went from ho-hum to holy shit. Gisele was walking in the Alexander Wang show! She kept press at arm’s length backstage, telling photogs and reporters (who obviously gathered around her chair like the fawning subjects we all are) that she wasn’t giving any sound bites today. I’m assuming she didn’t want to hear the word “football” at all, after her little outburst from last weekend. Instead we all watched as she flirted with Guido Palau while he did her hair in the usual limp Alex Wang way. After taking about a zillion pictures of her looking perfect without makeup, I wandered over to a different section.

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

How do you measure influence?

Is it through website hits? Or sales? Through ad dollars? Or the number of mass retailers who’ve knocked off your work?

The answer is all of the above and none of the above. Influence is an intangible thing that just happens when you know your craft and you work hard at it.

To determine who belongs in the Fashionista 50–our list of the most influential people working in New York fashion–we used our own knowledge of the industry, combined with advice from industry sources. We also considered each candidate’s consumer reach–through sales, media, etc.

To be considered, candidates had to live and work in New York for most of the year.

What’s Fashionista’s definition of influential? It describes people who are shaping the direction of the New York fashion industry, both aesthetically and in terms of how the business works.

You’ll find the entire Fashionista 50 list after the jump. Click on the person’s name to read a full bio. And if you really want to click through the whole slideshow, you can do so here.

Most Influential Street Style Bloggers

Most Influential Street Style Bloggers

When I started writing about fashion in 2004, street style photographers were not yet a breed. Well, at least not in the Western world. But with advent of The Sartorialist in 2005, that all changed. Today, just about every fashion related website, blog, what-have-you boasts some form of street style photography.

And while Scott Schuman, founder of The Sartorialist, may be the pioneer, he is no longer alone in his work. The streets surrounding fashion week runways have become flooded with a special type of paparazzi–the kind who you want to be bothered by.

Other than a good blog post, and some great inspiration, what do street style photographers get out of this work?

Quote of the Day

On Bill Cunningham

“This is a man who seems to be moderate in everything except his pursuit of fashion and his consumption of film; a photographer who won’t put down his camera even when he’s the guest of honor (‘You think I’m going to miss a good picture?’) and won’t pick up his camera just because Catherine Deneuve Read more →
