Stella McCartney’s Boss at Chloé Told Her She Would Fail Because She’s a Woman

Stella McCartney’s double-win at last night’s British Fashion Awards, where she was awarded both Designer of the Year and the Designer Brand of the Year, capped off a year of non-stop success for her eponymous label.

Success that probably made McCartney’s former boss at Chloé eat his words. According to McCartney, he was pretty positive she, being a woman and all, wouldn’t make it on her own.

Alexa Chung Beats Out Kate Middleton for the British Style Award (Plus the Full List of Winners from the British Fashion Awards)

The results from the British Fashion Awards are in and while there are a lot of familiar names in the winners’ circle, there are some surprises, too. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen won for Designer of the Year (deservedly so). Alexa Chung took home the British Style award, which normally wouldn’t be so shocking–except this year she was up against Kate Middleton *gasp*. The Model category, made up of industry vets and a relative newcover, was a bit of a wild card. Stella Tennant, looking amazing in a skinny tuxedo, beat out Georgia May Jagger and Kristen McMenamy. Victoria Beckham, now a bona fide fashion designer, had some stiff competition with Burberry, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford for Designer Brand, but she won. Quite an achievement for a former pleather-wearing Spice Girl. Click through for a full list of winners:

The British Fashion Awards: Who Won What

The British Fashion Awards: Who Won What

At last night’s British Fashion Awards, the UK’s version of our CFDA awards (read: fashion Oscars), the ladies swept the show. According to Hilary Alexander at the Telegraph, last night’s awards were the strongest female showing since the awards were established in 1974.

Phoebe Philo, creative director for Céline, took home the top prize winning “Designer of the Year.” Alexa Chung took home the British Style award, an award decided by public vote which, according to the British Fashion Council, “recognises an individual who embodies the spirit of London and is an international ambassador for London as a leading creative fashion capital.” Naomi Campbell took home the new “special recognition” award and Lara Stone was named model of the year.

Of course the boys got a few nods, too. Here, the complete list of winners:

The British Fashion Awards – Luella, Jourdan

Last night, Luella Bartley took home Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards (kind of like the British CFDA awards) in London, which is fitting since each of her recent London Fashion Week collections have been standouts and favorites of just about everybody who’s seen them.
