It’s shocking to think that English menswear, famed for its Savile Row tailoring, is just now getting a dedicated menswear week. The London mens’ shows have traditionally been squeezed in on the last day of London fashion week, which was one of the factors in the scheduling debate between New York, London, Milan and Paris. Because that day coincided with the first day of Milan’s women’s shows, the London guys often got the shaft in terms of editor attendance. Starting in June 2012, that’s going to change.

A big congrats to Henry Holland, Louise Gray, Mary Katrantzou and James Long (the sole menswear designer) who have just been announced as the recipients of the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Forward scholarship. Long is the first menswear designer to receive the award. Each designer will receive financial and ‘business’ support for two consecutive seasons to show at London Fashion Week. Last year Peter Pilotto, Meadham Kirchhoff, and Todd Lynn took home the prize.

New Fashion Week calendar shakeups are forcing fashion capitals to battle it out.

Earlier this season, reports surfaced that regular fashion week schedule conflicts were causing problems (or “model crises“) for London Fashion week, with models not making it to London or being summoned to Milan early. While it seemed London Fashion Week’s fate was the least certain, Milan is also now in trouble with Condé editors threatening to skip it altogether because of a broken pact.

While most of our attention was admittedly on last night’s resplendent CFDA Awards, we can’t forget about the fashion talent across the pond–some of which has just been selected by the British Fashion Council for NEWGEN, an important showcase for emerging British Designers that is underwritten by Topshop. The winning designers, who are chosen each year in the categories of menswear and womenswear, receive sponsorship for their next runway show at London Fashion Week. And the winners are…

We know it can be tough to choose favorites in fashion. So we understand why, for the first time, the British Fashion Council chose to award not one, but three promising labels under its Fashion Forward sponsorship scheme. Congratulations to Peter Pilotto’s Christoph and Peter, Meadham Kirchhoff’s Edward and Ben, and Todd Lynn’s…Todd Lynn.

We caught Todd on the phone to ask him about his triumph.

Get it While You Can: Chloe Sevigny’s latest collection for Opening Ceremony is available to pre-order until December 20 on Opening Ceremony’s website. There are handbags, sunglasses, t-shirts, adorable dresses and many to die for shoes. One item we don’t quite understand, however, is a lookbook on sale for $65. If you want something from the collection, which you do, pre-ordering is probably your best bet for actually getting it, as these collections tend to sell out pretty quickly. {Opening Ceremony}

Snooki’s Shilling Slippers: Remember those huge, dirty-looking slippers Snooki wore both in and outside the house throughout Jersey Shore? It was only a matter of time before Snooki endorsed her own line of slippers. They’re bizarrely huge, come in leopard and pink and have shoelaces for some reason. To be honest though, they do look kind of comfy. {Blackbook}

Seven years ago, The British Fashion Council set out on a mission to make fashion just a little bit more ecofriendly. In order to do so, they established Estethica–an exhibition of innovative designers committed to working sustainably.

After seven years of success at London Fashion Week, Estethica and the BFC have decided to make the eco sustainable design exhibition available to consumers world wide through a collaboration with ecommerce site YOOX.com. To coincide with this week’s London Fashion Week, YOOX created an online retail space specifically for a selection of Estethica designers called Yooxygen.

LONDON–Remember that teaser for The September Issue where the voice-over would say, “Fashion is $500 billion global industry…” or something like that? Well, it looks like the UK makes up about a tenth of that $500 billion.

At least according to a new study commissioned by the British Fashion Council. Fancy-sounding consultants Oxford Economics researched and wrote the report, which states that £37 billion is made–directly or indirectly–from fashion each year in Great Britain. That’s not too shabby, given the size of the country. In fact, fashion is the 15th largest industry (out of approximately 81) in the UK.

The results are a boon to those like designer Christopher Raeburn, who produces much, if not all, of his product here in the UK. Fashion’s importance to the economy reinforces his mission.

Smack in the middle of Men’s Fashion Week, the British Fashion Council has announced its NEWGEN menswear class of Spring 2011.

Much like the womenswear recipients, announced June 10, the ten designers will be afforded the opportunity to show their Spring 2011 collections at London Fashion Week this September. And along with £5,000 – £10,000 towards their show costs, they’ll receive free exhibition space, usage of the BFC catwalk and mentoring.

Christopher Shannon, James Long, and JW Anderson will use stage runway shows; Carolyn Massey, Lou Dalton, and Sibling will do presentations; and Christopher Raeburn, James Small, Katie Eary, and Omar Kashoura will create installations.

After the launch of the CFDA’s incredible Fashion Incubator, we heard rumblings that some of the designers initially asked to join were forced to decline the invitation. Why? Because they couldn’t afford the space.

While we in no way think that the CFDA is to blame in this circumstance–what they do each year for fledgling designers is beyond admirable–we do wonder if the government could have chipped in a little more money so that the designers could work in the space at no cost. Most self-funded designers work out of their own homes. Which means spending $1,5000-$2,000 a month–even if that number is minimal compared to the typical cost of a similar space–is near-impossible.

For this particular initiative, the City of New York shelled out $200,000.

And while it’s a good step, it still pales in comparison to what the City of London has done for the British Fashion Council.
