Legendary Models Dish: Embarrassing Moments, Critiques of the Modeling Industry Today, and Why Kate Upton Is Important

Last night I got to attend what turned out to be one of my favorite fashion events ever: The NYC premiere of the HBO documentary About Face: Supermodels Then and Now. After seeing a few trailers (here and here), I couldn’t wait to see the film. (You can catch the broadcast premiere Monday July 30 at 9pm on HBO.)

Photographer and director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders told us he got the idea for the movie after he attended a cocktail party with a group of models from the 70s and 80s. After doing a shoot with them, he realized that there was a story there, so contacted others (going back to the 50s and 60s) to see if they would work with him–and no one had any hesitations. Models like Isabella Rossellini, Beverly Johnson, Jerry Hall, Carmen dell’Orefice and many more ended up in the final product.

Some of these modeling legends, like China Machado, Carol Alt, and Beverly Johnson, hit the red carpet at the Paley Center for Media last night to share their memories as well as opine about the modeling industry now.

Is Project Runway Bad for the Fashion Industry? Calvin Klein, Fern Mallis and More Weigh In

Former Project Runway contestants always seem to try to distance themselves from the show after they go out into the world on their own. Christian Siriano has been dealing with Project Runway demons for years, and Rami Kashou, who was on the show twice (and most recently ousted on the Project Runway All-Stars season) told us: “But it’s a game show, it’s nothing more to me. It’s produced.” And according to fashion industry insiders, if you want a career as a fashion designer, you’d best distance yourself from reality TV fashion, too.

Fashion News Roundup: Calvin Klein’s Boyfriend Gets Busted, John Varvatos Shuns Fashion Star‘s Shenanigans, and Bill Cunningham is Honored by Carnegie Hall

Calvin Klein’s Baby Boyfriend Drama: Twenty-two-year-old ex-porn star Nick Gruber, who shares a suspiciously similar hairstyle and skin smoothness with his 69 y.o. designer beau, was arrested yesterday on charges of assault, resisting arrest, and cocaine possession– in that order. It seems the law has come between him and his Calvin. {NY Post}

UGG Opening New NYC Flagship: After the apocalypse, the only things left will be rats, Cher, and Uggs. The fuzzy boot retailer, which continues to expand against all the fashion faux pas odds, will open a 2,500-sq-foot store in NYC’s Meatpacking District this fall. {WWD}

John Varvatos Doesn’t Fancy Fashion Star Theatrics: The Fashion Star mentor isn’t very into the ridiculous shenanigans that explode onstage during the clothing presentations on his reality show. “If the show continues to go on,” he’d apparently like to see less of these distractions. Hold on– if? IF?? But what on Earth would we do on Tuesday nights without this glorious, fashion forward, relevant celebrity-driven concoction of a series? I can’t bear the thought. {BuzzFeed}

Why Are There So Many Scorpios in Fashion? We Ask Astrologer Susan Miller to Explain

Why Are There So Many Scorpios in Fashion? We Ask Astrologer Susan Miller to Explain

Could your astrological sign make you suited to a career in fashion?

As ridiculous as that may sound, Anna Wintour, Robbie Myers, Glenda Bailey, Calvin Klein, Zac Posen, Edith Head, Emilio Pucci, Kelly Cutrone, Peter Lindbergh, Alexa Chung, Isabella Blow, Daphne Guinness, Chloe Sevigny, Lauren Hutton, Jean Shrimpton and Helmut Newton are just a few of the many editors, designers, photographers and style icons who were born under the sign of Scorpio. These folks are successful, powerful, iconic and we had a hunch that it wasn’t just a coincidence.

I happen to be a Scorpio myself and considered that might be the only reason I kept noticing other fashion people with November birthdays, until I realized other people had noticed that as well, like Astrologyzone‘s Susan Miller (aka the fashion industry’s most trusted advisor).

Susan also does the horoscopes for Elle, so she’s familiar with the fashion world, and in fact, works for Scorpio editor Robbie Myers. Also, one of her daughters is Chrissie Miller, designer of Sophomore. Susan was nice enough to chat with us about Scorpio personality traits and why this particular water sign is such a great fit for the fashion industry.

Check out a behind-the-scenes video of model Irina Lazareanu posing on park benches and rolling around in the probably dog poo-filled grass of Washington Square Park. It was all for Erin Kleinberg’s lookbook shoot. {Elle.com}

Best Dressed: Paris Edition, Featuring Blake Lively, Lou Doillon, Charlotte Dellal, and More!

This week, Paris was the place to be and black and white were the colors to wear. At Chanel couture, Blake and Lou kept it classy in Chanel jackets. At Valentino, Bianca Brandolini and Charlotte Dellal were gorgeous in looks from Spring ’11 and Fall/Winter ’10/’11, respectively. We made an exception for our fave Diane Kruger, who was not in Paris, but holding it down in Berlin in classic Calvin Klein. Click through to check them out.

Fashion News Roundup: Joanna Coles Haul Vlogs, and Lady Gaga (Might Have) Gone Drag for Vogue Hommes

Get a Clue: L.A. boutique Confederacy has teamed up with Francisco Costa to reproduce and sell the iconic white Calvin Klein dress that Alicia Silverstone wore in Clueless. (Recall the scene between Cher and her father: “What the hell is that?” “A dress.” “Says who?” “Calvin Klein.”) The dress will be sold online and in-store for $915. We’re, like, totally excited. {Daily Front Row}

Taylor-Made: Rachel Zoe’s former assistant Taylor Jacobson is now working as Kate Beckinsale’s stylist. It’s a high profile gig for Jacobson. Last thing we heard, she was consulting for denim line Kasil. Maybe her former boss won’t be so harsh now. {Hollywood Life}

The Teacher As Student: You probably wouldn’t expect the Editor-In-Chief of Marie Claire to be taking her cues from haul vloggers Blair and Elle Fowler (ages 16 and 21, respectively), but that’s exactly what she did. Check out Coles’ “What’s In My Bag” spoof vlog. {Marie Claire}
