Kate Middleton, the Obamas, Justin Timberlake and More Top Vanity Fair‘s 2011 International Best Dressed List

Vanity Fair has just released a preview of the 72nd installment of their famous annual International Best-Dressed List.

As usual, it’s a mixed bag of royals, financiers, socialites and entertainers. Yes, Kate Middleton, whose style we’ve been tracking since her royal engagement, makes her debut on the prestigious list as the Duchess of Cambridge (she’s listed as the wife of the future King of England). However, this isn’t her first time on the list–her inaugural appearance was in 2008.

There are a few other repeats–Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (no surprise there), Carey Mulligan (whom we love), Lady Gaga, who many people didn’t agree with last year, and Michelle Obama, who makes her fifth consecutive appearance–this time with President Obama as a best dressed couple. Another one of our faves, Tilda Swinton, made a well-deserved return to the list after a three-year hiatus. Musician and Lagerfeld muse Janelle Monae is an exciting newcomer and refreshing addition to list, which tends to disregard younger, edgier people.

As for the men, actor Colin Firth and actor/fashion designer Justin Timberlake make their debuts on the list. Firth’s role in A Single Man couldn’t have hurt his chances and it’s good to know that wearing a tragic denim suit to an awards show early in your career is something you can bounce back from. Click through for a sneak peek of the list.

Fashion News Roundup: Joe Zee Gets Picked Up, a Topshop Pop-Up, and a Boy for Carla?

All on the Line Continues: Joe Zee’s fashion reality TV venture for Sundance has turned out to be as successful as the designers he’s helped. All on the Line has officially been picked up for a second season of entertaining designer rescue missions. {WWD}

Mary-Kate as Me: We love a good Olsen twins photo shoot and we love a good Terry Richardson photo shoot. Combine the two and we’re pretty much in heaven. Think fur coats, big glasses and lots of thumbs up. {Terry Richardson’s Diary}

Secret Shopping: This Thursday, there will apparently be a “secret” pop-up shop inside the Topshop store in Soho (as well as Oxford Circus for any Londoners). It will stock special collaboration items from Pamela Love, Nasir Mazhar, Meadham Kirchhoff, and Ann-Sofie Back and will be located…somewhere near a florist? {Racked}

Gaga Needs Help: If you missed The View yesterday, here is a video of Lady Gaga’s interview, including her having to be helped onto the stage by two men and almost falling when trying to hug Barbara Walters because her shoes are so insanely tall. {Styleite}

Fashion News Roundup: Real Housewives‘ Danielle Is Now a Stripper, Tilda Swinton With a Bowl Cut, and Images From Iris Apfel’s Jewelry Line

Peek Iris Apfel’s Jewlery Line for HSN: The inimitable icon of everything accessories is having a moment (though, honestly, when isn’t she?). Recent news of an upcoming jewelery line with HSN is now supported by a few choice pics, resplendent with all the great costume-y kitsch you’d expect. Clear space around your neck accordingly. {Racked}

Danielle from Real Housewives NJ Becomes a Stripper: Ultimate LOL! After her contract was not renewed for next season, 48-year-old Danielle Staubs has signed a three-year contract with a New York gentlemen’s club where she will give one live, fully nude performance and pose for the club’s website. Bravo: the real gateway drug. {Daily Mail}

Yohji Yamamoto Reflects on Life and Ideals: Adidas produced a 30 minute documentary, “Yohji Yamamoto: This Is My Dream,” as a semi-promotional tool but probably wasn’t expecting it to be quite so, well, good. The doc chronicles the month leading up to the Y-3 show at New York Fashion Week and the designer is surprisingly open about his personal life and creative processes, commenting on his desire to simply “cut clothes” and remain outside of the vicious trend cycle. {WWD}

Gaga, Diane Kruger, and Carey Mulligan Top Vanity Fair‘s Annual Best Dressed List

Gaga, Diane Kruger, and Carey Mulligan Top Vanity Fair‘s Annual Best Dressed List

Vanity Fair‘s 2010 International Best Dressed List was released today, and it’s a mishmash of the obvious–Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy–and the odd: Stacey Bendet Eisner, Dylan Lauren. (We know they look fine–but really, are they the best dressed in the world?)

Most Notable:
Cindy Leive, Glamour Editor-in-Chief
While Leive is known for her awesome editing skills, her style chops have yet to be tested. Could this be the beginning of her grooming for Vogue?

Nora Ephron, Writer
We love Ephron’s words, but we also love her Jil Sander wardrobe.

Waris Ahluwalia
Not only does Waris have impeccable style, he’s also a lovely person.

Most Missed (Really, how could VF have left these names off the list?)

People Are Talking

Who Made VF’s List?

The Vanity Fair International Best Dressed List has always somewhat baffled me. Maybe baffled isn’t quite the right word, but I’m always amused by what a mixed bag it is. Of course, I don’t expect it to be a straight-up list of fashion folks, as that doesn’t truly represent the people covered regularly in VF. Read more →
