Cate Blanchett ‘Would Never Bathe in Her Own Urine’, Plus All Her Other Beauty Secrets

Cate Blanchett’s skin deserves all the superlatives it always gets. I recently had the chance to meet her and sit with a small group of beauty editors for an interview with the actress, and her skin is unbelievably luminous. While I’ve always respected her as an actress (she owned Galadriel in LOTR) and as a red carpet dresser (ditto that lavender Givenchy gown she wore to the 2011 Oscars), as a fellow pale person, I’m truly in awe of her amazing skin, especially considering the fact that she’s almost 43.

SK-II, the brand which Blanchett has famously been using for about 10 years–and shilling for the last eight–is launching a new LXP range this month, which includes a cream and serum; both contain concentrated amounts of Pitera, which is the mystical ingredient in all of SK-II’s products. So after trying some of the luscious, rose absolute-scented potions, we got down to the business of asking the actress all the important beauty questions. Read on for her secrets.

From Pixie to Buzz Cuts: A Look at Celebs Who’ve Chopped Their Locks

From Pixie to Buzz Cuts: A Look at Celebs Who’ve Chopped Their Locks

The internet’s been abuzz this week with news of actors chopping off their hair for their art. Dakota Fanning, who’s shooting a movie about a girl with leukemia, was spotted with a crop but it turned out to be a wig. So was Vanessa Hudgens, but she actually did the deed for a role in the upcoming film Gimme Shelter in which she plays a homeless girl. She told Access Hollywood that she looks like a “soccer mom.” We have to say we sort of agree with her. (Run out and get a pot of Sebastian’s Craft Clay, Vanessa.)

But it’s an honored tradition for actresses to go short for a role, and the beautiful thing about hair is that it grows back. Sometimes a short crop can even make a career: look at Mia Farrow who let Vidal Sassoon chop her hair for Rosemary’s Baby. And Agyness Deyn didn’t get any attention in the modeling world until she went short.

To celebrate the tradition of celebs going short–whether for a role or because of a life change–click through to see a roundup of everything from totally bald to the cutest of pixies.

Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists: The Complete List

Hollywood’s Most Powerful Stylists: The Complete List

We’ve become huge fans of the Hollywood Reporter over the last few months, mostly due to Janice Min’s excellent makeover of the trade publication. Staffer Merle Ginsberg navigates the LA fashion scene with an entertaining mix of gossip, insider news, and general knowledge that is not only rare for the West Coast, but rare for fashion writing in general.

So we were thrilled to see Ginsberg’s list of the 25 most powerful stylists in Hollywood covering this week’s issue. Rachel Zoe obviously ranks number one, with names like Nicole Chavez, Annabel Tollman, Brad Goreski, Leslie Fremar, and Kate Young rounding it out. See the full list below, and read the Zoe cover story here.

Shocking News: New Study Shows That Beauty Ads Can Make You Feel Bad About Yourself

Whether you think the beauty industry is full of artifice and false hope, or believe it provides legitimate services and products, there is definitely a psychological component. While trying to maintain a firm sense of objectivity and logic, I still sort of fall into the latter camp. I think mascara is a miracle product that makes you look instantly awake and younger. And retinoids work. But there’s a lot of gray area, and this is where beauty ads come in. Their sole purpose is to convince you that you NEED something, that your looks could be improved.

This Sunday the New York Times style section reviewed a new study from The Journal of Consumer Research wherein the authors observed the reactions of young women after they looked at a series of images and advertisements. There were a few surprises.

The women looked at advertising and plain images of products, without any human models–just pictures of bottles and tubes with ad copy. The products were divided into two categories: beauty enhancing (like perfume) and problem solving (such as acne cream).

Fashion Is Fun

Patrons of the Arts

Things we liked in this behind-the-scenes video of Vogue‘s Art Issue. 1. It was Anna’s idea to put Lady Gaga in the issue. 2. Lady Gaga is fully aware that she does the pantsless thing and wants something new for the shoot. Also, she arrived naked with just a raincoat on. 3. Without even saying Read more →
