With this year’s CFDA Designer of the Year award landing on their mantle piece last week, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCullough of Proenza Schouler are the reigning princes of New York fashion. The duo’s tastefully experimental collections have–season after season–garnered critical praise for their clarity of vision and elevation in execution.
For Resort 2014 the duo offered up an unexpected and bold key piece: Get ready for a midi-length, knife-pleated half-circle skirt.

Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs are the dynamic duo behind the uber successful line Cushnie et Ochs–nominated for the prestigious Swarovski Award at yesterday’s CFDA Awards. Cushnie and Ochs, who are gorgeous to boot, attended the awards with Karlie Kloss, whom they called their “tall statue of a date.”
Over the weekend we bumped into the two at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic and asked them to address the longstanding rumors that the two are actually a couple, among other things. Here’s what they had to say:
As Greta Gerwig’s star continues to rise from indie Mumblecore queen to bona fide Hollywood ingenue, she’s showing up more and more on red carpets and in the fashion world. (She attended this year’s Met Ball wearing Saint Laurent.)
We chatted with her about braving scary red carpets, hiring a stylist, and getting wasted in the ladies’ room at the Met Ball. Just try not to want to be best friends with her after reading this interview.
Secretary Hillary Clinton handily stole last night’s CFDA Awards show. She also nabbed a Presidential endorsement.
And that’s a wrap. The 2013 CFDA award winners have been named and now they’re out partying at The Standard (the official Swarovski-sponsored after party) and Westway (the exclusive Givenchy after-party) and wherever else the night may take them.
Proenza Schouler nabbed their third win for womenswear designer of the year (they won in 2007 and 2011) beating out Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs. See who else took top honors this year.
The 2013 CFDA awards, fashion’s Oscars if you will, will be handed out in mere hours. The industry has been gathering to recognize and honor its leading talents since 1981.
A lot has changed since the early years of the awards. What was once a small intimate industry event is now a widely covered celebrity event. “I think it reflects a broader shift over the last few years where fashion has become more and more popular,” Style.com’s editor in chief Dirk Standen told us. “The internet has had a lot to do with that. It’s entertainment on a par with movies and music.”
So to prep you for tonight’s awards we’ve assembled this handy primer. In it you’ll find the complete list of nominees, our predictions on who will take home the big prizes, and all the celebrity presenters and attendees slated to show up.
