What It’s Like Inside the CFDA Incubator (Hint: A Lot Like College)

We visited the CFDA Incubator (where 10 hand-picked emerging designers are provided with studio space–which they still pay for at a monthly rent–and mentoring for about two years) for a market day during fashion week and kind of didn’t want to leave. There were lots of positive vibes.

In addition to checking out the latest from designers like Timo Weiland, Daniel Vosovic, Whit and Isaora, we decided to try and find out what it’s like to work in a shared space with a bunch of other designers–something designers don’t really do, unless they’re on Project Runway (though Vosovic tells us this is totally different).

CFDA CEO Steven Kolb on Controversial Organic Ave Collab: ‘We Are Not Promoting a Juice Only Diet’

Last week, the CFDA announced it was partnering with Organic Avenue to provide models with support and education as well as a 50% discount on all the retailer’s food and juices during fashion week through March 31.

The collaboration comes after models complained about the “difficulty of finding food that is both nutritious and convenient” during fashion week, and is part of the CFDA‘s ongoing efforts to address the working conditions models face and raise awareness about eating disorders within the industry.

The program has already faced severe criticism from numerous mainstream media outlets. But, in our opinion, it’s for all the wrong reasons.

Hackathons Invade New York Fashion Week

Not one but two ‘fashion hackathons’–one hosted by the CFDA and IMG and the other by Hearst–will take place during this coming New York fashion week. This news is pretty surprising when you consider that most fashion people probably don’t even know what a hackathon is.

To explain what a hackathon is, why it’s happening during New York fashion week, and what this means for the industry, we spoke with Liz Bacelar, founder of Decoded Fashion, an organization that creates events dedicated to bringing fashion and tech together. Bacelar, along with former Lincoln Center fashion director (and, before that, director of special events at Vogue) Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, made the CFDA/IMG fashion hackathon (an official part of NYFW) happen.
