Happy Bastille Day! Celebrate With a Look Back at Our Favorite French Style Icons, From Yesterday and Today

What is it about the French? Or French women to be exact? No matter what they’re wearing–whether it be a t-shirt or a ballgown–they always manage to exude that certain…je ne sais quoi.

And it’s precisely that je ne sais quoi that has inspired designers (and our wardrobes) for generations.

So in honor of Bastille Day, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite french style icons–from those of the past like Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot, all the way up to the new guard, like Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lea Seydoux.

Click through to see them all.

Fashion News Roundup: Isaac Mizrahi Won’t Show At NYFW, Lagerfeld’s New Perfume And New Albums From Charlotte Gainsbourg and Twiggy

Isaac Mizrahi Won’t Show At NYFW: The designer filmed a video blog revealing that he’ll be putting out a lookbook instead of a runway show. He thinks it sounds “more modern… for about one second” and jokes that “next season we’ll be planning our fabulous Lollapalooza fashion show in 3D.” {Isaac Mizrahi}

Charlotte Gainsbourg’s New EP And Music Video: The Balenciaga muse’s third album, Terrible Angels EP, will come out September 6; until then, sate your hunger with this crazy cool video that includes Gainsbourg clones doing a choreographed dance routine. {Pitchfork}

Karl Lagerfeld Announces New Perfume, Karleidescope: I would buy this just for the semi-ridiculous name, but it also sounds intriguing: it’s “ultra feminine” with notes of violet, patchouli, angelica and freesia that supposedly smell different on each woman. { French Vogue}

Fashion News Roundup: Help Out Oxfam, Abercrombie in Paris, and Charlotte Gainsbourg is Preggers

Fire Destroys Oxfam’s Warehouse: The charity lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in donated products that would have been sold in stores and at festivals across the globe, including a fair amount of vintage fashion items. Their machinery was also severely damaged, and the company has sent out a distress call for emergency donations. To help, donate via their website.

Charlotte Gainsbourg is Pregnant: We had no idea, but were so informed with pictures from Cannes, where she appeared in definitely atypical maternity gear. {The Cut}

Kim Catrall Isn’t the Biggest Supporter of SATC3 or the Rumored Prequel: Despite Sarah Jessica Parker’s insistence that there is “one more story to tell”, Catrall isn’t really that convinced and refreshingly admits that the sequels are nothing but an excuse to make money. Best line: “We can’t play twenty-year-olds anymore”. Amen, Samantha. {MovieWeb}

New York’s Sonia Rykiel Boutique Is Closing: Soft weeping will be heard throughout the city on Saturday, as the Upper East Side Madison Avenue boutique will shutter it’s doors on Saturday. The merchandise is heavily discounted though, and a new location is in the works. {Racked}

Our Favorite Mother & Child Editorials and Campaigns

Our Favorite Mother & Child Editorials and Campaigns

H&M’s holiday campaign features Stella Tennant and her daughters Cecily and Jasmine, nine and seven. They’re meant to embody the “spirit of togetherness” theme that H&M is pushing for the quickly-approaching holiday season.

Of course, it’s not the first time model mothers and their kids have worked together in campaigns and editorials. So we decided to round up some of our favorite mother-daughter moments. One of them may surprise you.

Nicolas Ghesquière On Balenciaga’s New Fragrance, Paris

Balenciaga’s just released their first fragrance in twelve years, Balenciaga Paris. The scent, which is powdery, light, and perfect for someone who doesn’t want to smell like they’re wearing perfume, launches at Bergdorf Goodman on the 15th. We expect Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Steven Meisel-shot campaign to pop up everywhere this spring, but for now, you can Read more →

News From Balenciaga-Land

We hear Balenciaga’s readying to shoot their new campaign. Not a celebrity in sight this time around though. Charlotte Gainsbourg’s at home in Paris and Jennifer Connelly’s snug in New York because Nicolas Ghesquière chooses models this season. The line up so far includes Kasia Struss and “three unknowns.” Whether they’re grouped together or on Read more →

Gainsbourg Bells, Balenciaga Smells

“Balenciaga has become my second home,” Charlotte Gainsbourg told WWD. Gainsbourg – actress, French music royalty and (official) face of the brand for the past year – is working on a fragrance with Nicolas Ghesquiere and Coty. Executives were quick to point out that she was chosen based on her almost indivisible ties to the Read more →
