The Mysterious Case of Christina Hendricks’ Ports 1961 Event at Bloomingdale’s

The Mysterious Case of Christina Hendricks’ Ports 1961 Event at Bloomingdale’s

Last night, Ports 1961 showcased their Fall/Winter 2010 collection on Bloomingdale’s fourth floor. There was quite a turnout for the event, a mini fashion show and cocktail reception, as Mad Men star Christina Hendricks was billed as the host.

“Christina Hendricks, star of Mad Men, will host a cocktail reception and will be on hand for a special presentation of the Ports 1961 Fall/Winter 2010 Collection at Bloomingdale’s 59th Street,” read the release.

It’s true, she was there, and looked stunning in a Ports 1961 sheath dress. And she graciously and patiently signed autographs and posed for photos with adoring fans for nearly an hour. But her actual involvement with the Ports 1961 presentation was suspiciously limited. She never once took the stage during the presentation, and the 10 or so press outlets who had attended the event with the promise of interviewing Hendricks, myself including, were left without quotes. I was told, rather cryptically, when I got to the fourth floor, that Hendricks would not be conducting any interviews.

The clothes were gorgeous, and we’re seriously coveting the textured thick tights the models were wearing, but the real story was Hendricks’ sudden lack of involvement with the Ports event.

Fashion News Roundup: Gap Tries To Fix What’s Not Broken, Uniqlo’s J+ Hits Stores, and Christina Hendricks Thinks Karen Elson Copied Her Look

Gap Tries To Fix What’s Not Broken: Yesterday, Gap dropped its iconic logo that almost everyone and their mother could recognize for a Helvetica font logo with a weird blue square behind it. Brand Channel has some strong words on the change: “Ditching the classic logo, recognized by everyone, in favor of whatever that new monstrosity is, demonstrates a prototypical brand panic move…Ironically maybe, the new logo is perfect for the brand. It communicates exactly the values currently embodied by Gap: A sense of being lost and a lack of clear vision and creativity.” Ouch. {Brand Channel}

Jil Sander for Uniqlo: Uniqlo’s J+ collaboration hits stores today. Racked NY was on the scene and the hot ticket is the outerwear. {Racked NY}

Christina Hendricks Thinks Karen Elson’s a Copycat: Harper’s Bazaar covergirl Christina Hendricks claims she’s responsible for Elson’s red locks as well as her success. “I was in Milan, and you would see the same girls at castings. There was one girl—she was like, ‘I can’t get any work. I’m so sick of this, I’m ready to quit. I love your hair color. What do you color your hair with?’ and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s red. Here’s my formula.’ It was Karen Elson. A couple of weeks later, she had bright-red hair…Sorry, Karen, but you did ask about my hair color. Then I saw her on the cover of Italian Vogue, and the rest is history!” {Harper’s Bazaar}

Fashion News Roundup: Olivier Begins to Heal, Garance’s First Jobs, Plus British Vogue and British GQ’s Beautiful Cover Stars

Inside Kate Moss’ 30th British Vogue Cover: British Vogue’s next issue will mark the the 30th time Kate Moss has covered the magazine and the 6th time she’s covered September in the past 10 years. She looks great on the cover (obviously), showcasing the “minimal chic” look in Burberry. Editor Alexandra Shulman predicts another big trend for Fall will be Fifties full-skirted silhouettes, which will be featured in a story called “God Created Woman”. Perhaps we have Mad Men to thank?

Chelsea’s Wedding Dress Being Knocked Off Already: A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz didn’t waste any time recreating Chelsea’s Vera Wang look and they’re knocking off Hillary’s ODR gown while they’re at it. {The Daily Beast}

September 15 to become official Marc Jacobs Day: Not really, but it might as well. This September 15 will mark the designer’s Spring ’11 runway show, the launch of a new e-commerce site, and the opening of Bookmarc, Jacobs’ new bookstore on Bleecker. They also may want to rename the west village Marc Jacobs Village. {The Thread}

Olivier Zahm to get closure:
Yesterday, poor, sad Olivier gave sympathetic Purple Diary readers hope, as heartbreaker Natacha Ramsay has agreed to come down from her “love escape” in Maine to see him in New York. “This symbolic gesture will help me to peacefully let her go in her new life. I will do my best to start again with the Purple Diary.” The only posts between this and the initial break-up post were a picture of clouds, a picture of him and Terry Richardson titled “Love,” and a picture of some naked women in the new Purple Book. {Purple Diary}

Who Should’ve Been on Vogue’s June Cover?

Vogue’s June issue features Blake Lively, her second cover in two years. While Blake surely seems like a lovely girl, her style is all about showing off her hot body, and she’s most famous for acting in teen TV shows and movies, not exactly “modern American woman” material. The June issue is usually a slower Read more →

Kids’ Stuff: You can’t really argue with the fact that little ones look extra cute while wearing designer clothes. Unnecessary? Sure. But still adorable.
