A Film Crew Trailed Carine Roitfeld, Plus a 53-Year-Old Closed the Show at Hermès

Hermes is the ultimate in luxury. So it follows that yesterday’s fall show was a luxurious experience in spite of the rain and dropping temps. The setting was the courtyard of the beautiful École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts. Heat was pumped into the tented space and waiters stood at attention with flutes of champagne and glasses of fresh grapefruit and raspberry juice. Attendees were posh fangirls in their silk Hermes scarves. This is the 1% (.05%?).

In addition to loaded VIPs and editors, a few notable names were there, both on and off the runway. Carine Roitfeld was there, making only her second Paris fashion week appearance (she was at Dior and showed up later last night at Givenchy), trailed by a film crew. Curious? Us, too.

Christophe Lemaire Says “Au Revoir” To Lacoste With Op-Art and Clean Lines

On a sunny Saturday morning with the US Open underway only a few subway stops away, it seemed an appropriate time to see the Lacoste show. This collection is Christophe Lemaire’s last for Lacoste before he decamps the tennis courts for the more luxurious pastures of Hermès.

Despite the debauchery of FNO the night before, the Theatre at Lincoln Center was packed for the 10am show. I heard many conversations taking place in French all around me. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to glean any Gallic gossip, since I chose to study Spanish in high school. There was some chatter about the arrival of Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler, the cutest couple in NYC, but I missed them.

After deciding that I liked the big resin “1212” graphic cuff that came as a seat gift–Lacoste has launched a jewelry line–I settled in and prepared myself for the preppy. According to the tip sheet, for spring 2011 Lemaire was inspired by OpArt, Bauhaus, and the Villa Noailles which was designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens.

Gaultier Out at Hermes, Lemaire In
The Business

Gaultier Out at Hermes, Lemaire In

After seven years under the helm of fashion’s enfant-terrible, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermes has hired Christophe Lemaire as its new creative director. Lemaire previously worked as Lacoste’s creative director for eight years.

With Gaultier out and Lemaire in, it’s undeniable that Hermes is finally taking a more commercial approach to its ready-to-wear collection. Under the command of Gaultier, and earlier Martin Margiela, Hermes prêt-à-porter gained an avant-garde reputation which, while popular in editorials, was not popular in stores.

We’re expecting Lemaire’s first collection, due in March 2011, to be sportswear heavy, helping to transform Hermes’ ready-to-wear collection into a viable business.
