Versus Fall 2011: Kane Is More Than Able

MILAN–Young designers often find it difficult to balance two separate collections. Unlike the Karl Lagerfelds of the world, these emerging talents–Marios Schwab, Richard Nicoll, Jason Wu come to mind–don’t typically have massive teams to help them complete their workload. Sometimes, their talent allows them to overcome the challenge. Sometimes, it doesn’t.

For Christopher Kane, who designs both his namesake collection and Versace’s Versus, this hasn’t been a problem.

Best Dressed: London Fashion Week

Model Jade Parfitt looked cool and ladylike in Christopher Kane. Alexa Chung went casual for the Burberry show, making her Burberry Brights bag the star. Lou Doillon mixed Club Monaco and vintage effortlessly. Our new best friend Samantha Cameron pulled off Christopher Kane with aplomb. And Clemence Poesy made us all want to wear Mulberry forever. London’s street style is tops! xo, Fashionista

Fashion News Roundup: British Fashion Fund Finalists Announced, Kate Middleton’s Blue Issa Dress Gets the AIC Treatment, and Tina Turner is Hot

Meanwhile, Across the Pond: The British Fashion Council and British Vogue announced their Fashion Fund finalists yesterday. Congrats to Christopher Kane, E. Tautz, Nicholas Kirkwood, Osman Yousefzada, Charlotte Olympia, Jonathan Saunders, and Peter Pilotto. {Vogue UK}

Royal Knock-Offs: Kate Middleton’s engagement ring isn’t the only thing being replicated by stores looking to make a quick buck. Tesco, which is kind of like the Wal-Mart of the UK (but with more food), created a $25 version of her now-famous blue Issa dress. Shame. {NY Times}

Kate Moss: Art Dealer? Moss is reportedly selling portraits of herself at Art Basel in Miami next week. {Telegraph UK}

London Fashion Week Spring 2011: The Ten Best Collections

London Spring 2011 was hands down my favorite fashion week ever. Shocked, are you? Once you feel the energy, see the masterful technique, and find yourself wide-eyed by the innovation, you’ll understand where I’m coming from. Here are my ten favorites.

Additionally, I must send out a big thanks to Swarvoski, not only because they sponsored my trip to the UK, but also because they underwrote almost all of the very best shows at LFW. If not for them, some of these collection mightn’t have happened.

Fashion News Roundup: Anna and Marc do Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Doonan Leaves the Observer for Slate, and Harmony Korine Creates a Film For Proenza Schouler

Fashion News Roundup: Anna and Marc do Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Doonan Leaves the Observer for Slate, and Harmony Korine Creates a Film For Proenza Schouler

Doonan Leaves Observer: The creative director of Barney’s has written a column for the New York Observer for the past 10 years but he’s leaving print for the greener pastures of online at Slate. It’s a great coup for Slate. Can’t wait to read him over there. Hope he keeps writing gems like this. {Business Insider}

Anna Does Late Night: Anna Wintour and Marc Jacobs were on Jimmy Fallon last night to talk about Fashion’s Night Out. When the conversation steered away from FNO, Wintour promptly brought FNO back to the forefront. Other highlights? Wintour complaining about Gaga performing late at the last Met Gala because she was too busy “communing with god,” and Marc Jacobs flubbing his words a bit on why he’s in a sling in Vogue’s September issue promoting FNO: “But, unfortunately, or fortunately, one can’t say no to Anna.” So he got off his morphine drip and posed. {theCut}

Brits to Watch: The British Fashion Council (the UK’s version of the CFDAs) has released their list of nominees. Among them: Victoria Beckham and Burberry for designer brand, Lara Stone and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for models, and for the all important designer of the year award, it’s between Christopher Kane, Erdem and Phoebe Philo for Céline. {Daily Front Row}

Harvey Nicks Gets Hakaan

Harvey Nicks Gets Hakaan

The work of Hakaan Yildirim, Turkish design sensation, ANDAM winner and Carine protégé, is now available to purchase. But only at British department store Harvey Nichols, which also stocks fashion darlings Erdem, Peter Pilotto, and Christopher Kane.

The prices aren’t insane–they’re not cheap, either, but doable if you can generally afford a $2,000 dress. A peplum skirt rings up at £660, approximately $870, and a wool body con dress will set you back £1,130, or around $1,485.

This is a huge get for Harvey Nicks, and we bet they’ll be keeping Yildirim on come spring. But we also bet he’ll be showing up in several more retailers by 2011.

Central St. Martin’s Final Selections Announced: See The Designs That Were Left Behind

Whether it was from exhaustion or elation, a few tears were shed and a tantrum or two thrown inside talent incubator Central St. Martins this past Monday.

Why the brouhaha? The 40 graduates who’ll make it into the final press show next Tuesday–the one that’s covered by everyone from Fashionista to Style.com to Vogue UK–were chosen. And while about 80 students were left behind, most of the creations shown in Monday’s preliminary trial were anything but forgettable.

Need a Life Change? Cut Your Hair

I know I’ve already told you about the bob, but it’s been two weeks and I’m just now used to it. It might sound melodramatic to say it’s changed my life, cutting off about seven inches of hair—but it has. For one thing, I don’t have to wash it everyday. And the dirtier it gets, Read more →
