Evolution of the Slash: A Retrospective of Models-Turned-Actresses

Beauty and fame often go hand-in-hand, so it makes sense that models and actresses seem to be forever trading places.

The latest model to make the jump to acting is Erin Wasson, who we got a first look at in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter today. And she’s following in the footsteps of some of acting’s biggest names, like Mila Jovovich and Cameron Diaz, who got their start as models. But while the model-turned-actress is certainly not a new breed, there seem to have been even more slashes emerging recently: Gemma Ward, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Brooklyn Decker, for instance, have all made the jump. And the new Mad Max movie (Mad Max: Fury Road) is almost cast entirely with models: former model Charlize Theron and more current ones Abbey Lee and Rosie Huntington Whitely are all set to star.

And while the model/actress transition is certainly not rare–it can be hard to pull off (see: Cindy Crawford in Fair Game).

Click through for our round-up of the most memorable models-turned-actresses.

Fashion News Roundup: Cindy Crawford is Iffy About Vogue‘s Model Guidelines, Philip Lim on Kate Middleton’s Killer Bod, and Keira Knightley Gets Engaged

Regarding Vogue‘s new model guidelines, Cindy Crawford feels that the fashion industry is “in the consumers’ hands– If you don’t like what you see, don’t buy it.” {Jezebel}

Following that random bar brawl in February, Pierre Casiraghi, who, you know, is a Prince and all, went on disability for a month–for chin scratches. {NY Mag}

Philip Lim thinks Kate Middleton has “a body of death”… which is a good thing, apparently! {Grazia}

Poor, poor Mrs. Zuckerberg: Experts estimate that the Facebook founder gave his new bride a ruby ring worth only $25,000. We’re sure she’s crying into her piles of money right now…{NY Post}

We Investigate: The Curious Case of the Ageless Supermodels From the ’90s

When Claudia Schiffer’s Guess ads dropped yesterday we literally had trouble deciphering between the current ones and the ones from 1989. I mean, the woman has not aged a day! In 23 years! Then today, Christy Turlington goes ahead and shows up on Tatler also preternaturally unchanged.

This got us thinking about all our favorite 90s supermodels–Naomi, Cindy, Elle, etc.,–whose modeling careers are still kicking, well into their forties. And it’s not hard to see why: The ladies are as gorgeous as they were twenty years ago. And there’s nary a boob that has dropped even an inch. Don’t believe us? Click through the gallery below for a side-by-side comparison of some of our favorite supermodels today–and way back when.

Fashion News Roundup: Gisele Feeds an Elephant, Cindy Crawford Models Bra Tops, and Alexander McQueen Relaunches Website

Gisele’s New Baby: No, the supermodel is not expecting again with hubby Tom Brady–not that we know of, anyway! The Brazilian stunner was snapped bottle feeding a baby elephant on a visit to an elephant orphanage during a recent trip to Kenya. Bündchen took to her Facebook page to rally fans’ support: “We need to speak up for these animals or they will continue to be in danger,” she posted. {People}

Fashion’s Fishbowl: Daphne Groeneveld covers April’s Vogue Korea, holding a fishbowl–an analogy for how the fashion world is running these days? It probably isn’t that deep, but we can’t wait to dive into this spread. (Puns!) {TFS}

McQueen’s Website Relaunches: Exciting news for Alexander McQueen fans (so, everyone). The brand has revamped its website, which includes a separate scarf “boutique” with exclusive colorways of the infamous skull scarf, and plans to feature the entire archive of videos and photos of all McQueen runway shows. The website will combine the main line with secondary line McQ so now it’s possible to shop both in one place; in addition, the digital flagship has extended e-commerce to cover the EU. A “My McQueen” feature allows users to save their favorite images from the runway and advertisement as well as product, making for one awesome wish list experience. {Fashionista Inbox}

A History of Naked, Pregnant Celebs on Magazine Covers

Earlier today, the Internet was all a flutter with the newly released nudie pics of an extremely pregnant (it’s been what, ten months now?) Jessica Simpson on the cover of Elle. The April 2012 spread was photographed by Carter Smith and styled by Joe Zee, but they clearly got some inspiration, elsewhere. Since Annie Leibovitz shot a naked and pregnant Demi Moore for Vanity Fair twenty-one years ago, it seems like pregnant celebs everywhere have been clamoring to strip down for the newsstands.n At this point, it’s practically a right of passage for expectant stars, as well as an informal announcement that “exclusive first baby pictures!” will be shopped around in the near future. Is pregnancy a valid excuse for famous women (most of whom would scoff at an offer from Playboy in normal circumstances) to take it all off?

Take a look at our investigation of the fascinating (and at times, extremely uncomfortable) history of the naked, pregnant magazine cover. Do you think it’s a celebration or just exploitation? And does a pregnant naked person really make you want to buy a magazine? We want to hear what you think.

The Limited and White House|Black Market to Roll Out Some Serious Spring Campaigns: The two retailers aren’t playing games this season in the ad department. The Limited has tapped Karolina Kurkova to front their spring ad campaign, and it’s costing them a pretty penny; “in the $10 million range,” dished an insider. Meanwhile, White House|Black Market is also making moves, hiring Coco Rocha to star in a TV spot, which will air on Monday. You know what they say, gotta spend money to make money! {WWD subscription required}

June Ambrose is Working on A Clothing Line: Far be it from the famed stylist to leave the masses without clothes to go with their June Ambrose brand turbans and sunglasses. The stylist to the stars told the YBF that she is releasing a contemporary women’s clothing line, which she hopes will be out this fall. {The YBF}

Hanneli Mustaparta is Tweeting for Calvin Klein Today: The model-turned-blogger will be giving Calvin Klein’s Twitter followers an inside look at what’s popping backstage, and the show’s star-studded front row.
