Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

How do you measure influence?

Is it through website hits? Or sales? Through ad dollars? Or the number of mass retailers who’ve knocked off your work?

The answer is all of the above and none of the above. Influence is an intangible thing that just happens when you know your craft and you work hard at it.

To determine who belongs in the Fashionista 50–our list of the most influential people working in New York fashion–we used our own knowledge of the industry, combined with advice from industry sources. We also considered each candidate’s consumer reach–through sales, media, etc.

To be considered, candidates had to live and work in New York for most of the year.

What’s Fashionista’s definition of influential? It describes people who are shaping the direction of the New York fashion industry, both aesthetically and in terms of how the business works.

You’ll find the entire Fashionista 50 list after the jump. Click on the person’s name to read a full bio. And if you really want to click through the whole slideshow, you can do so here.

Quote of the Day

“I know that when shopping for clothing, I’m just not happy unless the décor involves taxidermy chickens dressed in Edwardian formalwear. Maxfield is good enough to provide these…and two other elements that have come to symbolize the mark of true sophistication for me: sex toys and human remains.” –Cintra Wilson in her critical shopper piece Read more →

Quote of the Day

“[Cintra] Wilson told me she usually writes about ‘obscure stores that don’t exist outside of Manhattan,’ and she thinks of her audience as ’1,300 women in Connecticut and urban gay guys in Manhattan.” She said it was ‘kind of provincial of me [Wilson]‘ not to realize how big The Times was and how her audience Read more →

Under the Influence

This story on Allure’s blog, originally from The British Telegraph, particularly struck me just now in light of all of your comments on the Cintra Wilson quote, as well as just the heated tone of comments on the internet in general. Here’s the deal: A woman’s Facebook friend posted an incredibly derogatory remark about the Read more →

“J. C. Penney has always trafficked in knockoffs that aren’t quite up to Canal Street’s illegal standards. It was never “get the look for less” so much as “get something vaguely shaped like the designer thing you want, but cut much more conservatively, made in all-petroleum materials, and with a too-similar wannabe logo that announces Read more →

Models

“She comes off as genuinely sweet, sunny and slightly dim, her punkette look the thinnest candy coating over an interior filled primarily with airy, whipped pink goo and nuvo-hippie, gestalt-y wow-ness.” —Cintra Wilson of the NY Times on Agyness Deyn. The writer goes on to debate whether said dimness is strategic or not.
