Why You Should Spend Money on Facial Mist (and the Top Five to Invest In)

Contessa Schexnayder is a makeup artist and has been shackled to the beauty industry for over nine years, working for such lines and retailers as Nars, MAC, Bobbi Brown, Blue Mercury, and Space NK. She is a self-proclaimed ingredient know-it-all, and likes long walks on the beach.

With all of the lotions and potions beauty companies are hustling the last thing you need is another useless product to waste money on. Keeping this in mind, I can say with great confidence that you need some facial mist in your life. Not only does it set your makeup, but it also helps with: calming, hydrating, replenishing, adding radiance, and irritation. Mists are beauty lifesavers and can take you from looking tired and lackluster to bright and dewy in seconds. Trust me.

I’ve rounded up the five best misters on the market. And if you can’t get behind shelling out for water to spray on your face, we’ve added some alternative uses (i.e. scolding your cat, warding off zombies, pretending you went to the gym).

Fashionista’s Favorite Beauty Products

We spend a lot of time around the office discussing our favorite items, from shoes to bags to whatever look book happens to be around. Sometimes the best way to find a new product is to have a friend turn you on to it. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up all of our favorite beauty products, in no particular order.

Nars, MAC, and Clinique are popular in our office, and our beauty purchasing is very high/low, ranging from Tom Ford to Neutrogena from the drugstore. And like most women, we have some things to which we’re very loyal, and some that get transitioned in and out.

Click through to see our top picks, and tell us about your beloved products–we’re always looking for ideas.

Beach Beauty: Tinted SPF Moisturizers

Even though it’s only April–and currently 60 degrees and rainy here in NYC–it’s never too early to start thinking about beach beauty. One must be optimistic after such a craptastic winter.

So whether you’re heading somewhere tropical for spring break or just going to sit outside for brunch, you can start your sunny, warm weather preparation by picking up a tinted moisturizer with an SPF component. They pack a lot of punch for one product: moisture after a cold winter, a bit of color, and sun protection.

Click through to see some classics, as well as new options from Bobbi Brown and Philosophy.

What Should Be In Your Fashion Week Makeup Bag?

What Should Be In Your Fashion Week Makeup Bag?

Schedules are finalized, batteries are charged, shoes are chosen. And having a few key beauty items to face the week of chaos is just as important as having my Macbook charger in tow. Faced with crappy weather, a frenzied schedule of shows, and the pressure of day-to-night dressing, you have to be prepared for all eventualities. And really, isn’t this true of anyone’s life?

There are tons of new and classic products that are perfect:

Hair: Sleek or tousled? If the latter, you must try Bumble and Bumble’s new Texture Hair (Un)Dressing Creme. Run it through damp hair and dry with a diffuser for volume and a perfect messy look. I’ve used it on my hair dry, too. It adds a little weight and texture when things are getting flyaway. Prefer sleek? Aveda’s classic Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss with rice bran oil provides a ton of shine and the smell is really calming. And I’m giving Leah a can of Meta Revive Dry Shampoo from celeb hairdresser Serge Normant’s posh new line. Because who has time to wash their hair during Fashion Week?

Sparkle And Spin: A Review Of The Newest Mascaras

Sparkle And Spin: A Review Of The Newest Mascaras

Mascara is the cell phone of the makeup industry. There is constant innovation, one-upmanship, and frequent turnover of product. In fact, by the time you read this review, there will probably be ten new kinds on the market.

Not that I’m a complaining. Mascara is my desert island item. It’s the one thing that is always on my face, even at the gym. My eye lashes are long, but really light, so I look dead without it. Not everyone feels this way. Lauren hardly ever wears it (!!).

Every mascara has a vision, which it tries to achieve through the brush, the formula, or both. Some are even getting specialized–bottom lashes only.

Click through for a review of five of the newer mascaras out there.

In Honor of Bonne Bell’s Relaunch: A Nostalgic Walk Down The Beauty Aisle

We just received word that Bonne Bell is relaunching its cosmetics line. Remember Lip Smackers? You could get a Dr.Pepper flavored one. Yum. They still exist, too. Anyway.

This news inspired us to go back to our formative years and remember all the ridiculous beauty products we used to use. In 20 years will Tavi be writing about how silly it was that we painted our nails Vamp and coated our hair with formaldehyde? Only time will tell.

Click through for a walk down memory lane and tell us about your faves.

Report From the WWD Beauty Biz Awards: Changes to WWD And The Winners Revealed

This morning, at the ungodly hour of 7:30, the 8th Annual “WWD Beauty Biz Awards” took place at the Four Seasons Restaurant in NYC. Being consummate beauty professionals, everyone in attendance looked refreshed and chic, with lots of Chanel bags and perfectly applied lipstick.

Gina Sanders, the president and CEO of Fairchild Fashion Group, started off the presentation by dishing about changes coming to WWD and Style.com (now owned by Fairchild, of course).

WWD is getting an overall architecture redesign in 2011, and an eight page section called “WWD Style” will be introduced; it will provide deeper “business insight, analysis, and fun.” The men’s coverage will be increased, with new beefier quarterly sections and more weekly coverage. The Beauty Biz insert will also be overhauled. And finally, an iPad application is coming.

Gina was more vague about Style.com– “Like ladies having work done, we don’t want to reveal too much,” she said–but big changes are clearly afoot. She mentioned the potential to reach millions of fanatic fashion and beauty consumers through the site. We will be watching closely.

Now onto the awards.

Round-Up: Our Favorite New(ish) Lip Balms

It’s November now. This means that chapped, dry, flaky lip season is upon us. There are tons of tried-and-true lip balms out there. Kiehl’s has been a sought-after classic for years. Rosebud Salve is a favorite of makeup artists everywhere because of its multi-functionality. Burt’s Bees Beeswax was one of the first green offerings, and it’s got a following that can no longer be called “cult.” Aquaphor is the serious brand recommended by dermatologists. And of course—there’s Carmex.

These are all fantastic, but if you need a new fix for your lips, here’s a round-up of our faves. They include organic, natural, and multi-purpose products.

We did a lot of swiping and wiping for you–now go find someone to kiss.
