Hearst Fashion Titles Set September Issue Records–But How Will Condé Nast Fare?

We alread know the covers, but how thick are this year’s all-important September issues going to be?

Pretty thick. Just when we thought print was dying, magazines are seeing an increase in ad pages, especially in fashion and beauty. Things are looking particularly good for Hearst, whose relatively recent acquisition, Elle, will debut Hearst’s largest September issue of all time. The fashion title will have 400 ad pages (annoying for us, but good for publishing!), up 14% from last year.

Clearly Elle‘s doing well over at Hearst–this news comes on the heels of four consecutive record-breaking issues in terms of ad pages. Fellow Hearst titles Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire were not exempt from the fashion and beauty ad page increase: the former increased by 16.6% to 360 pages, while the latter went up 23% to 237 pages. It’s Marie Claire’s largest issue ever.

Condé Nast Is Reportedly Forbidding Photographers and Editors From Working With Carine Roitfeld on her New Magazine

Carine Roitfeld‘s new fashion glossy CR is set to launch this September, and the fashion industry is pretty excited to see what she’ll dish up. Well, everyone except Condé Nast, that is, if a report in Page Six is to be believed.

According to the gossip column, Condé’s chairman Jonathan Newhouse has sent correspondence to photographers and editors “ordering” them not to work with Carine. Apparently he sent word to Mario Testino, Craig McDean, David Sims and the Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott team to “remind” them that they have exclusive agreements to shoot for Condé mags only. We had already heard that Testino wouldn’t be a part of the mag, but it sounds like Condé may be concerned that its other marquee names may de-camp over to Carine, who obviously has many friend in the industry. Page Six‘s source also told the paper that even those not under contractual obligation have been “discouraged” from working with Carine.

Adventures in Copyright: Did One Glamour Stylist Rip Off Another?

It’s not at all uncommon to see fashion magazines owned by the same publishing company recycle cover photos, especially for their foreign editions. But sometimes, repeat covers pop up under strange circumstances. For example, Carey Mulligan’s October 2010 US Vogue (a Condé Nast title) shot magically showed up on the cover of French ELLE‘s (owned Read more →

More Details on Fairchild’s Acquisition of NowManifest: BryanBoy and Rumi Neely Had No Idea It Was Happening

More Details on Fairchild’s Acquisition of NowManifest: BryanBoy and Rumi Neely Had No Idea It Was Happening

Seemingly out of nowhere, Fairchild Fashion Media, the unit of Condé Nast that publishes WWD and Style.com, announced that they had acquired NowManifest, which “hosts” fashion blogs BryanBoy, Fashion Toast, Anna Dello Russo, Mr. Blasberg, and Style by Kling. The acquisition is interesting because it means people who were once independent style bloggers are now part of one of the biggest media companies in existence. However, it also raises some questions, like…

Does Fairchild now technically own all of those blogs? Were the bloggers in on the deal? Or even aware of it? What changes will NowManifest and each of the blogs undergo as a result of the acquisition? What about editorial content?

While BryanBoy tells us he’s “thrilled to be working with Fairchild,” he reveals that he and the other bloggers–meaning Rumi Neely, Derek Blasberg and Anna Dello Russo–didn’t even know about the acquisition until less than 24 hours before it was announced–and even then he was lead to believe it was simply a partnership.

What’s With All the New Hires at Love?

What’s With All the New Hires at Love?

Revered fashion glossy Love is undergoing some changes.

For starters, Editor-in-chief Katie Grand launched her own personal Twitter last week, apart from Love‘s, which we assumed she was behind. Shortly thereafter, she hired herself some company at the top of Love‘s masthead. First, she gave ShowStudio’s Alexander Fury the role of “editor” at the magazine, announcing that he would oversee both print and online. Today, it was announced that Lulu Kennedy, founder of Fashion East, a non-profit that supports emerging designers, would become Love‘s Editor at Large. WWD reports that Kennedy’s first project will be scouting subjects for a Solve Sundsbo-lensed front-of-book portrait feature, for which, based on this tweet, Kennedy will be the first subject. Fury and deputy editor Isaac Lock will interview the subjects.

So what does all of this mean?
