Finding the Perfect Mascara
Fashionista's Guide To

Finding the Perfect Mascara

Most women probably agree that a good mascara is absolutely essential to any beauty routine. Or at least that’s what makeup companies think, if the sheer and utterly confusing amount of mascaras on the market is any indication. There are volumizing, thickening and lengthening formulas; bristle, plastic, curved, and straight wands; ones that declump, ones that purportedly help your lashes grow longer–there’s even mascaras that vibrate. But with so many options on the table, how does one even begin to choose the right mascara for herself?

We decided to ask some experts to help us demystify mascara. They helped us decode everything from brush shape to how to apply it. What follows is a review of the 15 latest and greatest mascaras on the market. Read on:

Our Quick and Simple Guide to Getting Perfect Ombré Lips

The concept of ombré has been around in beauty for many seasons now. We’ve seen it on the hair of cool downtown girls and irreverent models (and thought for sure it was dying at the end of 2011–we were wrong), and of course on manicures everywhere. It was only a matter of time before it moved to lipstick.

Here’s everything you need to know to get the look, from product recommendations to expert application tips.

Exclusive: Watch Pat McGrath Give Jessica Stam Statement Lips and Answer All our Lipstick Questions

Jessica Stam is the new face of CoverGirl, and a few weeks ago we got to sit at a spring trend mini-seminar with makeup guru Pat McGrath and Stam. McGrath is fresh off her first-ever movie gig, helping to transform Rooney Mara into Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And now she’s prepping to do the makeup looks for 24 fashion shows in New York and Milan, but we got to catch up with her before the madness starts.

CoverGirl is releasing some videos highlighting their new spring beauty launches which feature McGrath giving some how-tos, with Jessica Stam as muse. Fashionista has the second such video exclusively today, and we also had the opportunity to ask McGrath all our pressing lipstick application questions. Check out Stam’s transformation below, and also get answers to such complicated issues as: When should you use a lip brush?

Click through for our full interview with Pat McGrath and the new CoverGirl video.

Has Retouching Gotten Out of Control? Professional Retouchers Dish About What’s Getting Altered, What Isn’t and Why It Happens

When you open a glossy magazine–whether it’s a model in an editorial in Vogue, a CoverGirl, or a celebrity in US Weekly staring back at you–is what you’re seeing real? How altered, airbrushed, Photoshopped and retouched are the people we see in ads and magazines?

A lot of people are asking these questions lately. Recently, the New York Times published an article about a computer algorithm for figuring out how much an image has been retouched–and it seems to have touched a nerve.

And where beauty ads are concerned–when retouching can actually mislead customers–steps are being taken to scale back on the post-production, or at least make plain that alterations took place. The UK released a series of advertising guidelines this past spring requiring cosmetics companies to disclose when they manipulate ads post-production. The US may start to do the same in the wake of the recent Taylor Swift CoverGirl mascara ad controversy. The National Advertising Division, a watchdog group, opted to ban the ads, prompting discussion that other cosmetics ads in the US could come under investigation.

But retouching has been around for almost as long as photography has–itʼs not a new concept. So why all the recent fuss?

The U.S. Takes Steps Towards Restricting The ‘Misleading’ Use of Photoshop in Cosmetic Ads

It’s not exactly a secret that cosmetic companies use photoshop to produce ads which show their product performing feats of transformation far glossier, prettier–and unattainable–than they would be able to achieve in real life. However while the practice is widespread, it turns out that it’s also sort of misleading to customers. We know: Shocker, right?

Thankfully, the U.S. is finally taking steps to tackle the problem, reports Business Insider. In a landmark ruling by the National Advertising Division, the U.S. industry watchdog decided to ban an ad by Covergirl for their NatureLuxe Mousse Mascara. The ad in question promised the mascara could deliver “2X more volume” on women’s lashes, but in the fine print disclosed that the models lashes had been enhanced post-production. The ruling said, “NAD was particularly troubled by the photograph of the model – which serves clearly to demonstrate (i.e., let consumers see for themselves) the length and volume they can achieve when they apply the advertised mascara to their eyelashes.” Except, of course, that they can’t. At least not without the help of photoshop anyway.

Considering that Pat McGrath is the originator of a lot of runway makeup trends, you definitely sit up and listen when she decides to talk about those trends. On Friday afternoon, CoverGirl held an event featuring Pat McGrath (CoverGirl’s Global Creative Design Director) and the brand’s new face, model Jessica Stam, who was perfection in a lace dress and a full-on face of glamorous makeup. The purpose of the gathering? To discuss the beauty trends from the recent spring 2012 runways and how mere mortals can recreate these looks and make them work for real life.

Here are ten tips we picked up, from Pat’s secret for perfect brows, to how to do a metallic lip:

Office Supplies That Double As Makeup Tools, And More Tricks From CoverGirl’s Jake Bailey

Maybe Taylor Swift’s adorably humble yet impressively savvy image is more than just a media concoction. Despite the team of professionals she’s surrounded by, the gal frequently does her own makeup. According to celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey, that perfect, dramatic cat eye–a staple hammered into her looks as heavily as her army of pale, full-skirted frocks–is often Taylor’s own handiwork.

“I’m amazed at the speed and precision with which she does her own cat eye,” Bailey gushed over dinner at NYC’s 5 Ninth last night, rendering even the most adept beauty editors at the table a little jealous. Noting that many women have slightly different shaped eyes, Bailey cited “practice, practice, practice” as his main advice for mastering the look, since there’s no uniform trick to account for individual, asymmetrical nuances.

Jessica Stam and Legendary Makeup Artist Pat McGrath Are Collaborating on Makeup Tutorial Videos…and More?

Makeup tutorials have become a bit of an internet phenomenon. YouTube is flooded with how-to guides on everything from getting the perfect cat eye to emulating the look of [insert famous person here]. And despite the fact that most of them are done amateur-style, uploaded by non-professionals with nothing but a mirror and a MacBook, they are ridiculously popular.

Apparently CoverGirl wants in on the phenomenon–they’ve tapped legendary makeup artist (and CoverGirl Global Creative Design Director) Pat McGrath and ultimate makeup canvas Jessica Stam to shoot “major how-to videos.” A shoot took place yesterday, as did a @COVERGIRL / @Jess_Stam / @patmcgrathreal Twitter love fest, which is where the above behind-the-scenes photograph came from. Also, there were some indications that this collaboration will extend beyond just how-to videos.
