Is Kate Upton Too Fat? Too Skinny? Why This Model of the Moment Just Can’t Win

Earlier this month Skinny Gossip, a site which bills itself as “pro-skinny” (read: pro-ana) wrote a pretty hate-filled post detailing all the ways in which Kate Upton is fat. Yes, you read that right. Kate Upton, the inescapable supermodel, man magnet, and fashion’s latest it-girl is, according to the site, too fat (which is even a kinder version of the vitriol spewed by The Skinny which called Upton a “squishy brick”).

Obviously this is sad on so many levels. Upton is clearly gorgeous–Jezebel points out that she is “basically the epitome of curvy, blonde beauty,” that she “ticks every box”–and she is a welcome variation to the size 0 model that has become the norm, though we don’t know that we’d necessarily call her plus size. Over at BuzzFeed Amy Odell also stood up for Upton, writing, “[H]aters can go on hating, but any model that doesn’t fit into a the runways’ preferred insanely skinny — yet muscley! — mold is more than alright by me.”

Here’s the thing though:

Karl Lagerfeld, Carine Roitfeld and More Turn Out for the New York Opening of Chanel’s ‘Little Black Jacket’ Exhibit

When Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld are behind an event, everyone in fashion shows up looking as effortlessly chic as possible. And that’s exactly what happened at last night’s New York opening of “The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s classic revisited by Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld.” Neither rain nor the treacherous cobblestones outside of 18 Wooster Street, where the exhibit is located, could stop celebs like Mad Men‘s Jessica Paré (who seems to be fashion’s favorite new celeb), Lily Collins and Pharrell Williams; too many models to count (but including Joan Smalls, Crystal Renn, and Dree Hemingway); and of course, Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld from turning out.

The exhibit, which already touched down in Tokyo, features photos from the book of the same name, in which Carine Roitfeld styled and Karl Lagerfeld photographed models, muses and celebrities wearing Chanel’s iconic little black jacket. For the New York exhibit, the photos (113 of them) are displayed in black and white covering one enormous wall, and blown up in color on the opposite one. So basically everywhere you turn, there’s a compelling, gorgeous photograph of some beautiful famous person wearing a Chanel jacket in way you never expected. It’s impossible not to play pick your favorite (Uma Thurman, Anna Wintour, and Sofia Coppola were among mine).

Fashion News Roundup: Final Fashion Week Dates Announced, a Brunette Crystal Renn Covers Vogue Mexico, and Natalia Vodianova Says Skinny is Better Than Fat

Catwalk Catfight is Over: After plenty of drama, the CFDA and the BFC have confirmed fashion week dates for the next three years that have left all parties happy(ish). Through September of 2014, NYFW will start the first Thursday of September instead of the second, allowing all other fashion weeks free from conflict of dates. {WWD, sub. req.}

Crystal Renn Covers Vogue Mexico: Proving she looks hot in any hair color, Renn covers the May issue of Vogue Mexico pre-bleaching. We’re big fans of the Ferragamo spring 2012 dress they shot, which feels so perfectly summery. {TFS}

Runaway Royals: Prince Harry attended this year’s London Marathon, where he told the BBC that he had been trying to get a place “for years.” And if it’s up to Harry, he won’t be doing it alone: “What’s fantastic is that my brother and his wife will be doing it next year, I think… He’s going to have to now, isn’t he?” Clarence House denies that Wills and Kate have plans to run – for now, anyway.{Vogue UK}

Fashionista Week in Review: The Best Fashion Instragrammers, Crystal Renn Talks Going Blonde, and Overexposed Celebs on the Red Carpet

Life with The Coveteur: We’re big fans of The Coveteur, so obviously it was a big score to follow their team through the closets of Susie Bubble, Erdem, and J.W. Anderson. Learn how they edit the most major wardrobes.

Fashion Statement or Overexposure?: Certain starlets have taken to showing their goods on the red carpet lately and we are just wondering: is this a new way to express yourself, or is it just good old fashioned attention seeking? Clutching our pearls..

Enough With the Cutoffs! Cute Alternative Looks to Wear to Coachella: Unless you live under a rock, you know that Coachella happened this weekend, and we couldn’t let you go in another pair of cutoffs! We put together 5 chic looks for the music festival, and if you weren’t lucky enough to go (like us) we think they’ll work just as well for your other summer events.

10 Plagues of Fashion: And we aren’t talking about Ugg boots! We had a little fun pairing the ten plagues of Passover with some fashion imagery.

H&M Goes Glam for a Good Cause: H&M launched a line of sustainable red carpet ready dresses, and they look pretty awesome. Some of the looks have already hit the red carpet on celebs like Viola Davis and Michelle Williams, so check out the lookbook if you’ve got a special event coming up.

Zac Posen on His Mystery Met Ball Plans and Being a Fashion History Nerd

Zac Posen on His Mystery Met Ball Plans and Being a Fashion History Nerd

The socialites, models, and one football player (Justin Tuck) who attended last night’s New Yorkers for Children spring dinner dance all looked stunning in in their gowns (Alina Cho was wearing a crazy enormous ostrich feather-skirted ball gown) but two of the best dressed attendees were undoubtedly Coco Rocha and Crystal Renn, both of whom wore Zac Posen.

We chatted with the designer about how he himself dresses to match his dates, his ‘surprise’ Met ball date, and what he thinks about the biggest fashion news of the year–Raf Simons going to Dior. Most endearingly, Posen revealed himself to be a serious fashion history nerd who thinks Elsa Schiaparelli is a total ‘bad ass.’

Crystal Renn On Why She Went Blonde and How Fashion Made Her a ‘Mental Patient’

Last night’s ninth annual New Yorkers for Children spring dinner dance could have easily doubled as a fashion show with an A-list casting. Doutzen Kroes, Erin Heatherton, Selita Ebanks, Coco Rocha and Crystal Renn all turned out to show their support for the organization, which benefits youth in foster care. While everyone looked gorgeous (damn, Read more →

Crystal Renn and Karolina Kurkova Give us Nightmares in Interview Magazine’s Envelope-Pushing Editorial

Crystal Renn and Karolina Kurkova get in touch with their, ahem, clinically insane sides in a Steven Klein-lensed editorial for Interview Magazine, called “Strict Institution.” Renn is the horribly abused patient antagonized by Kurkova’s Nurse Ratched-type character who metes out punishments like tying Renn up in weird positions and handcuffing her to things. The whole Read more →

Fashionista’s Week in Review: New York Fashion Week is Dunzo, J.Crew Teams Up With Manolo Blahnik, and Occupy Wall Street Fails to Disrupt Calvin Klein Show

New York Fashion Week Finally Wrapped Up: We saw lots of well-dressed people, random celebrities, underaged models, and, of course, beautiful clothes.

The Grammys Happened:… and (gasp!) celebrities attended, wearing clothes and everything!

Adele Won Six Grammys, Covers March Vogue: While we wish the Fashion Bible had opted for a full-legnth shot of the singer, we will co-sign on her glorious cleavage, featured prominently for all the world to see. In short: Girl, woooork!

Whitney Houston Dies: One of the greatest voices of our generation (read: ever), Whitney Houston passed away in her Beverly Hills Hilton hotel room last weekend. She was 48 years old. She will be sorely missed by all.
