Why Model Amanda Murphy Isn’t Giving Up Her Day Job as a Radiology Tech

Twenty-six-year-old model Amanda Murphy, who walked as a Prada exclusive this season and stars in the brand’s campaign to boot, isn’t fazed by her recent ascent to industry fame. “Everything happens for a reason, so it’s just my turn,” she explains.

Besides, Murphy is an accomplished “slashie”–not a model-slash-actress or a model-slash-musician, but a model-slash-radiology-technician. “I had work here [in Manhattan] on Friday, and Friday night, I flew home to work at the clinic on Saturday, and then Saturday after the clinic, I had to run to the airport to work here Sunday,” she says. “That’s the first and only time I’ve had a conflict. You have to spend money to make money and I’m at a growing point, so I’m okay with doing it.”

Murphy also discussed playing with Sasha Pivovarova’s baby backstage, the kindness of Alber Elbaz, and horseback riding.

Here’s that Banned Dazed & Confused Cover Featuring Azealia Banks and an Inflated Pink Condom

Last week, we reported that Dazed & Confused‘s September cover had been banned in several countries–seven, to be exact. The mag tweeted, with just a little bit of smug satisfaction, “Just been told our upcoming @AZEALIABANKS cover has been banned from 7 countries so far. Thank God for the Internet, huh?” Indeed. As dutiful workers Read more →

Sally’s Styling Seminary: An Interview with Katie Grand

Sally’s Styling Seminary: An Interview with Katie Grand

Katie Grand is, by far, one of my all time favorite fashion heroes. Every time I work with her and for her I learn SO much. Not only is she one of the only editors that gives me the space and platform to do much of my favorite styling work, she gives me the opportunity to collaborate with the BEST people in the business. For that, I will forever be in Katie’s debt. When I worked for Katie at Pop magazine, she taught me what it means to be a fashion visionary and an incredible business woman. I’m not going to go into a long spiel here about her biography; I really wanted to chat with her specifically about styling. For this column, I will be conducting a series of interviews with people in different fashion roles who hire and work with stylists, or the iconic stylists themselves. Katie answered my questions with the honesty and humor that I always appreciate from her. I learned so much reading her answers, I hope you guys do too!

Here it goes….

SL: How long have you been styling? It began when you started Dazed & Confused with Rankin and Jefferson Hack in 1993, right?
KG: Yeah, I was at St Martins and met Rankin and Jefferson at a bar in the basement of the Trocadero called DNA and I started working on Dazed, initially folding magazines, and then my first story was a white t-shirt story, shot by a friend of mine, Gary, who was at St. Martins doing photography.

SL: What led you to styling versus doing another job in fashion, like design?

We Rank the September Covers

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that September fashion magazine covers are the most important of the year. With fall just around the bend, September issues are packed to the brim with the newest trends. (They’re also packed with advertisements, essential to a magazine’s survival.)

And if there’s one thing you can say about this year’s September covers, it’s that the good covers are great and the bad ones are truly horrible. Notably absent from the bunch are Vogue Paris and Vogue Italia, whose cover images have not surfaced yet, but are sure not to disappoint.

Click through to see the best and worst of September’s covers!

Jefferson Hack Commands, “Go Create!”

Buttoned into a snugly-tailored waistcoat and looking very much the grand poobah of publishing in his white baroque armchair, editorial genius and founder of Dazed and Confused and AnOther magazine, Jefferson Hack, answered questions from The Business of Fashion’s founder Imran Amed on the future of multimedia publishing. Since Dazed‘s first incarnation as a two Read more →
