My Favorite Beauty Products: Ning Chao from Beautylish

This past January Ning Chao made the jump from magazines to the web, where she is the beauty director at Beautylish. (Welcome to the jungle, Ning!) In the ten years prior to that she’s covered beauty for Marie Claire, InStyle, Elle, Vogue, and Glamour. Now she’s putting her expertise to work at Beautylish, a slick site devoted to all things beauty: there are product reviews, makeup tutorials, message boards, and a stellar news section (they scored an exclusive interview with Blake Lively’s hair colorist—it took ten hours to make her a redhead.)

Monique Lhuillier Fall 2011: Princess Moments, in Black

Monique Lhuillier opened her fall show with something strange: leopard print. But Hollywood starlets who turn to Lhullier for her pretty and purposefully not–sexy looks need not fear this new beast. When Monique Lhuillier does animal print, it’s Dolce & Gabbana Lite: watered down, diluted spots, tamed in a way that renders the print elegant, tranquil, calm- never cougar.

Lhuillier is a lady, after all; or at least, her customer is, and one who needs a whole lotta graceful evening wear at that. For fall, the designer delivered accordingly, in lace, chiffon, and heaps of black that colored a departure from the indigos, plums, and fuschias she showed for pre-fall.

D&G’s Spring 2011 Garden Party

MILAN–The runway at D&G, Dolce and Gabbana’s younger and more affordable line, was lined with actual flowers–daffodils and roses to name a few–because Dolce and Gabbana’s girls are going to a garden party for Spring/Summer 2011.

But they’re not just going to sip cocktails and look pretty in the garden, they’re going to get down and dirty and do some gardening, too. Models were styled with kerchiefs and wore floral print bloomers with cropped smock tops, rompers (they’re still around), and dresses with apron pockets, paired with wedged wellies. Then they’ll break for a picnic, and disappear right into that red-checked blanket, wearing red gingham dresses, jumpers and separates.

But don’t worry, the D&G girls clean up well, of course, and for the actual, cocktail-sipping garden party, they’ll don flowy floral floor-length dresses with ruffled skirts. In fact, D&G’s liner notes state that the show “ends with a party al fresco where it is imperative to show up in long floral chiffon gowns.” So there.

Exclusive Photos: Life is Good on the Dolce & Gabbana Yacht

Since today marks the end of summer, the end of vacation, and the dreaded return to work (no, really, we are excited about NYFW!), we thought we’d share these exclusive photos a source sent us of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana frolicking on their yacht this summer.

They fashioned a bouncy castle type slide and attached it to their yacht, the Regina D’Italia, for the maximum yacht frolicking experience. You know, because being on a yacht off Italy isn’t glamorous or fun enough. We’ve already gone on about how envious we are of the Italian fashion elite and their fabulous vacations. Now we’re just a little greener.

While neither party has pointed fingers, we can’t help but look on this with the same skepticism we have when couples “mutually” split–c’mon, guys. Causing A Commotion: A Los Angeles clothing company is suing Madonna in regards to her new clothing line for Macy’s, claiming that they have been using the name “Material Girl” for years. Wait, who’s ripping off whom? Didn’t Madonna invent that phrase? Yeesh. {TMZ}

Long Nguyen Looks Back on 20 Years of Dolce & Gabbana for Men

Fashionista contributor Long Nguyen is the co-founder/style director of Flaunt.

There’s always a birthday to celebrate in Fashion Land. Two years ago it was the big 4-0 for Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, with an extravaganza on the High Line and a show/dinner on Central Park lawn, respectively. This fall marks the 25th year of Donna Karan and Tommy Hilfiger as well as the 40th year for Roberto Cavalli. And there’s sure to be plenty of events fêting these designers come Fashion Month.

Dolce & Gabbana also celebrated a birthday in 2010–the 20th year of its menswear line.

I’ll always remember that day in January 1990, in the old showroom at Via Santa Cecilia, that Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana presented their first men’s collection, just five years after they had launched their womenswear label. I had started to work for Dolce & Gabbana in New York a year and a half earlier. In those days, I was the only employee. It was my first job in the fashion industry.

Harley does Hermes: Trying to figure out a new way to wear your Hermes scarf? Well, Hermes just launched J’aime Mon Carre (I love my scarf), basically a street style blog, but with a bunch of cool girls you’ve probably seen before (Harley Viera Newton, etc.) all wearing limited edition Hermes scarves in different ways. Unfortunately, the scarves will only be available at Colette in Paris come September. {Nylon}

Will shape-ups really shape you up? According to the American Council on Exercise, “simply no evidence to support the claims that these shoes will help wearers exercise more intensely, burn more calories or improve muscle strength and tone.” Skechers disagrees. Why Saks’ New Designer Plus Size Department is a Good Thing

Prepare for a Chanel-inspired stampede. This autumn, Saks Fifth Avenue will become the first major US retailer to stock plus-sized clothing from all of its high fashion brands.

Goods from Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, and yes, Chanel, will soon be available up to size 14, with some brands extending to size 20. And rather than being segregated into a different section, plus-sized garments will be displayed on the same rails as straight-sized stock on Saks’ high-end third floor.

It’s astonishing that something so obvious, lucrative and longed-for could take this long. The plus-size clothing sector is worth $27 billion globally, according to data from New York-based buying firm Global Purchasing Group.

That’s partly due to prevailing health trends, but also a result of increasingly arbitrary sizing—the US doesn’t have any clothing size regulations, so a woman who wears a size 8-10 at a mainstream store might find that McQueen thinks she’s a 12 or 14.

Dolce & Gabbana on CNN: “The Designer With Two Heads”

There are many things I love about fashion, but my favorite part of the industry and best part of this job is the chance to meet designers. I have such admiration for these people who create gorgeous things, and when I get to meet them I often turn into a 12-year-old meeting Justin Bieber. I’ve giggled. Very professional.

Often times the designers’ stories are better than any prepackaged reality shows out there. CNN’s Revealed aired today and featured Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Theirs is an amazing love story and success story set in the incomparable backdrops of Milan and Portofino, Italy.
