Woody Allen, Grimes, Turn Out for J.W Anderson x Versus Versace Rave
Donatella Versace revealed her new vision for Versace’s little sister brand Versus at what was essentially a rave held at the Lexington Avenue Armory last night.
Donatella Versace revealed her new vision for Versace’s little sister brand Versus at what was essentially a rave held at the Lexington Avenue Armory last night.
Last November, Versace announced a new strategy for its little sister line Versus. Christopher Kane would no longer design it, and Versus would never do a runway show again. Going forward, Versus would be a series of collaborations between Versace and “various creative innovators and designers” and have a “strong digital element.”
So what does that all mean?
A new video airing exclusively on Fashionista sheds some light on what Versace has in mind for her beloved Versus (she says it’s “the first collection my brother Gianni gave to me in complete freedom to do”) in advance of the first designer capsule collection for Versus with J.W. Anderson.
“Kristen was a big problem with my brother at first; she was crazy!” recalls designer Donatella Versace in a new Style.com/Print profile of supermodel Kirsten McMenamy.
According to Versace, it was “like a war” anytime a new girl came on the scene, and when McMenamy arrived in the early ’90s, well, let’s just say we kinda wish fashion reality shows were around then.
Subtle, Versace is not.
Last night I made my way into Versace’s show space on Via Gesu–which is usually “mood” lit so dimly that I have to watch my every step–to find a stark-white, insanely brightly lit room, arranged in a sort of maze-like structure, with the audience seated in the center. Oh, and Janet Jackson was there.
Could Versace be going the way of other iconic family-owned Italian label Valentino which sold for $852 million last year?
According to WWD, an Italian paper reported that a Korean fund was in talks with Versace chairman Santo Versace to acquire his 30% stake in the company.
Now, Santo Versace has responded, calling the rumors completely false, the trade is reporting. But while Santo may not be selling his shares now, could outside investment be part of the company’s future?

PARIS–Donatella Versace could not have chosen a more appropriate locale for her Atelier Versace show.
She presented her spring couture collection at Le Centorial, a turn of the century restored building in the Bourse area of Paris which was, at the time of its construction in 1876, a revoluationary architectural project built by Gustave Eiffel’s firm. Old traditions met modern steel and glass constructions; the dome of Le Centorial rivaled that of the Grand Palais. So it was fitting that Versace’s collection was all about the interplay between structured garments and soft fabrics.
Versus’s follow-up to Christopher Kane will be another young British star: J.W. Anderson.
Before the rumors about Christopher Kane going to Balenciaga were squelched (a spokesperson for Kane said that the report was “unfounded”) I wondered: If Kane was going to helm Balenciaga, what would happen to Versus, the kid-sister Versace line he’s designed for the past six seasons? Surely, he couldn’t carry on designing three lines.
Even though today brings no new developments regarding who will replace Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga, Versace has announced that Christopher Kane will be leaving Versus in what WWD is describing as a “mutual agreement” between Kane and Donatella Versace.
It’s a “mutual agreement” because there was no termination of contract–Versus is simply taking a different tack.
