PARIS–Last night, Atelier Versace, Donatella’s bespoke line, opened Paris Haute Couture week. Versace returned to the Ritz Paris for the first time since Gianni Versace showed his last couture collection there in 1997. It was a collection true to the house’s DNA: cheeky, sexy, very, very glittery and with a front row packed with more Read more →
Donatella Versace is the subject of two profiles this morning in advance of her upcoming couture show and even though she’s one of the most recognizable faces in fashion, they reveal some pretty fascinating things.
While she may not do as many interviews as say, Karl Lagerfeld, she’s often just as honest and unfiltered. However, in these, from WWD and the Telegraph, she’s doesn’t actually say anything that head-scratching. Well, there was one thing about sleeping in a freezer. And did she really mean to say she “asphyxiated” her children? Read on for that, her thoughts on returning to the Paris Ritz for her couture show, selling the company and her friendship with fellow feminist Miuccia Prada.

If Mr. Lagerfeld and Mr. Cavalli have taught us anything, it’s that unfiltered honesty is the best, most hilarious, policy. And speaking of unfiltered designers, we haven’t heard from Donatella Versace since last November’s Versace x H&M media blitz. But with the house’s recent return to couture and the sudden interest sparked by potential IPO rumors, we’re starting to hear more from Ms. Versace again (which, yay!).

This information might come as a surprise to the folks over at Vogue Italia, but rappers have been vocal about their love for high-end fashion labels for years.
And the love affair continues. On Nicki Minaj’s latest album, Pink Friday 2: Roman Reloaded the bewigged rapstress shouts out Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour:
When I’m sitting with Anna, I’m really sitting with Anna / Ain’t a metaphor punchline, I’m really sitting with Anna / Front row at Oscar de la Renta, posture / Ain’t a b*tch that could do it, not even my imposter
And even more recently, fashion fanatic Kanye West boasted about his fashion exploits on his new track “Theraflu”, from dinner with Anna Wintour to racing go karts with Anja Rubik:
If there’s one thing Donatella Versace knows (besides the virtues of hair bleach and self-tanner) it’s the power of the female form. PARIS–After an eight year hiatus, Atelier Versace returned to the Paris couture schedule Monday with an intimate presentation in a gallery at the Ecole des Beaux Arts that had been completely covered in gold. Ms. Versace could not have chosen a better moment to show her Atelier line–it’s a moment when clients are investing in luxury clothes again across the globe, particularly in Asia and parts of South America (especially Brazil). It’s also Versace’s moment–this Atelier presentation on the heels of the brand’s successful collaboration with H&M for the other end of the market.
There were no seating arrangements and the small number of guests mingled with actresses Diane Kruger, Cameron Diaz, and Abbie Cornish. The actresses gathered around the supermodels were different manifestations of the Atelier’s collection–runway and real life.

In case you were wondering whether or not sales of the Versace for H&M collection would match the hype, fear not: They did. The collection went on sale in the UK, Europe and basically the world yesterday (we here in North America have to wait until tomorrow) and people were clamoring for it.
There are multiple reports out of London that people started camping out the afternoon prior to the 9am opening on November 17, and the internet traffic crashed the retailer’s website. Marie Claire UK reports that H&M locations in Dubai and Beijing sold out in under 30 minutes, and that pieces–not coincidentally–popped up on eBay shortly afterwards.
