Versace for H&M Debrief: Donatella Talks to Tim Blanks About Why the Collection Was Emotionally Taxing and If She Ever Shops at H&M

Versace for H&M Debrief: Donatella Talks to Tim Blanks About Why the Collection Was Emotionally Taxing and If She Ever Shops at H&M

This morning, Donatella Versace and H&M creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch sat down with moderator Tim Blanks for a chat on (what else) the Versace for H&M collaboration, which will hit stores in (OMFG!) just over a week. Here’s what we learned.

The collection is an homage to Donatella’s late brother, Gianni:

“Yes, it was an homage to Gianni. I couldn’t [pay homage in the same way] in my own line [the main Versace line] because it’s too archival, but I wanted to give it to a whole new customer, especially the younger crowd, through H&M.”

Working on the collaboration was difficult for Donatella emotionally:

“[Before the collaboration] I never went back [into the archives] to look because it’s something I have in my heart and it’s very painful. It was a hard process for me but then I said, ‘No, everyone should see what Gianni was.”

Watch: Lindsey Wixson and Daphne Groeneveld are Donatella Versace’s Puppets in Creepy New Versace for H&M Commercial

It appears that the first Versace for H&M TV commercial has been released in full and it might be the most fun TV commercial we’ve seen since Chanel’s finger dancing. H&M’s creative director joked in a behind-the-scenes teaser that they must have used “all the gold plate in London” for the film and that seems Read more →

Versace for H&M: From the Runway to the Red Carpet to Mother Effing Prince, Here’s All You Need to Know About Last Night’s Spectacular

Last night Versace and H&M pulled out all the stops–and we mean all of them–to put on a runway show and party to celebrate their collaboration, which hits stores on November 19. Pier 57 was transformed into “Versace Hall” complete with a mirror-walled cocktail lounge (made to resemble Versace’s show space in Milan) and a wood paneled runway in a pattern that seemed to mimic Versace’s Greek fret motif (and also ensured everyone got a front row seat).

Everyone except Anna Wintour was there (and maybe she was and we just didn’t see her?): performers Prince and Nicki Minaj (wearing an enormous green wig and sequined Versace for H&M) sat to watch the show; celebs, all dressed in h-to-t Versace for H&M, included Blake Lively, Uma Thurman, Jessica Alba, Chace Crawford, Chloe Moretz, Jennifer Hudson and Alan Cumming; there were designers aplenty from Joseph Altuzarra to Alexander Wang to Christopher Kane; in keeping with the collection’s ’90s theme, ’90s supermodels Linda Evangelista and Helena Christensen were there; and there were too many stylists and editors and socialites to count.

“It looks good,” Minaj told us about the collection as she walked the red carpet. “All the stuff they brought to my room today I was like, ‘I’m keeping that!’ Minaj confessed that she fell in her platform Versaces during the filming for her Superbass video but she said, “I’m not taking them off, fashion is pain, and I’m keeping them on, and Superbass went on to be such a big song, so maybe Versace’s good luck.”

The Top Ten Best Dressed from Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards

Last night we headed over to Carnegie Hall for a night of inspiration, heart-warming speeches and, most importantly, girl power. For those of you who don’t know, we are of course talking about Glamour‘s Women of the Year awards.

The annual event, which honors extraordinary women, this year doled out awards to the year’s standout stars–from the most talked about songstresses like Lea Michele and J.Lo to the visionaries who truly changed the world, such as Egypt’s “Facebook Girl” and Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, as well as legends like feminist Gloria Steinem.

While the there were too many wise words to count (Arianna Huffington reminding us that “failure is just a stepping stone to success,” Gloria Steinem assuring us that there is life after 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, “life is just one big surprise”) we’ve managed to at least narrow down the night’s best dressed. Though with ladies as remarkable as these, that too was a challenge. Click through to see the best dressed from the night.

Versace for H&M Gets Even Better: Prince and Nicki Minaj To Perform at Launch Party

Versace for H&M Gets Even Better: Prince and Nicki Minaj To Perform at Launch Party

Donatella Versace is bringing out the big guns when it comes to the NYC launch party of her new Versace for H&M collection. And by big guns we mean Prince and Nicki Minaj. Yes, you read that right: Prince. And Nicki Minaj. Performing. We think our heads just exploded.

WWD reports that both of the singers are set to perform after the Versace for H&M fashion show wraps. Of the all-star act, Donatella told the industry newspaper, “To have my friend, the great, the amazing, the one and only Prince, and the extraordinary Nicki Minaj both perform at the event, will create exactly the feeling of joy and glamour I want this partnership to express.” We wholeheartedly agree with her.

When Great Mustaches Happen to Stylish People: We Give Fashion Peeps Movember Makeovers

When Great Mustaches Happen to Stylish People: We Give Fashion Peeps Movember Makeovers

If you’re feeling a little post-Halloween depression and no amount of fun-sized chocolate bars will cheer you up, here’s something that will: Movember is now upon us! That’s right, Movember – that magical month near the end of each year when mustaches sprout and flourish (or attempt to) on the faces of men everywhere, and bring joy to all who surround them. It’s like combining all the best holidays, plus your birthday, and making it last a full thirty days. It’s that unreal.

But it gets even better. Movember, sometimes called “Novembeard,” is actually a charitable endeavor, raising funds and awareness for cancers that affect men. Participants start with a clean-shaven face on November… erm, Movember 1st, and are sponsored by mustache admirers who want to see what they’ve got, facial-hair-wise. It’s your basic win/win situation.

Since we ladies aren’t physically able to participate in the growing/cultivating aspect of Movember, we thought it would be fun and pretty much necessary to imagine our favorite fashion figures in some legendary celebrity ‘stache styles. Then, with a little photoshop magic, we were able to make these mustache matches a reality. Can you really see Anna Wintour with anything but a pencil-thin mustache? And who would’ve thought a snowy Fu Manchu would seriously flatter Karl Lagerfeld? Take a look at the rest of our picks, and prepare to be mesmerized by some marvelous mustaches.

Fashion News Roundup: Karlie Kloss Gets Her VS Wings, Karl Lagerfeld in a Snow Globe, and All of Adele Covers Cosmo UK

Karl Creates Makeup, Snowglobe for Sephora Europe and Asia: Karl can’t stop, won’t stop. This time, he’s created a capsule collection which includes a Karl snow globe, Karl doll, and color cosmetics. I’m actually planning a European vacation just to secure a Lagerfeldian snow globe of my very own. {WWD}

Gisele on Her Diet and Perfect Life: Gisele tells British Vogue that she basically never drinks, and her children think vegetables are dessert. Also, she only eats red meat twice a month, and she prays before she does. Could a Gisele cooking/lifestyle blog, a la Gwyneth’s GOOP be in the near future? {Fashionologie}

Vivienne Westwood Visits Occupy London: To which percent does the British style icon belong? The eccentric designer and lifelong activist visited the protest site at St. Paul’s Cathedral for two hours. She’s been known to incorporate anti-establishment messages into her designs, so she could’ve been looking for inspiration for her next collection. {NY Mag}

Donatella Versace on Giving up Drugs and Her Thoughts on Roberto Cavalli Paying Frequent ‘Homage’ to Versace

She conquered the fashion industry one skintight dress at a time and practically made a trademark out of her platinum hair and tanned skin. Now with the Versace for H&M collection about to hit stores in a matter of weeks, she’s also the lady of the hour. Of course, we’re talking about Donatella Versace. (Is there any other?)

First Look: Versace for Kids

First Look: Versace for Kids

It’s official: Today’s luxury brands should not only boast accessories, fragrance, and home goods collections, they must also outfit their clients’ children. This explains the launch of Young Versace, a new range of kids’ clothes from Donatella and co. The line was launched Thursday at Pitti Bimbio, the trade show for baby clothes.

So, what’s it look like? if you’re expecting lots of gold lamé and lycra, think again. The styles, made for newborns through 12 years, are quite sweet, with plenty of pastels. There’s an Alice in Wonderland-themed print on onesies and dresses, plus tiered skirts emblazoned with white, yellow, and pink micro-orchids. (If you are looking for a bit of bling, there’s a Swarovski crystal-studded baby bottle. Seriously.)

Versus Fall 2011: Kane Is More Than Able

MILAN–Young designers often find it difficult to balance two separate collections. Unlike the Karl Lagerfelds of the world, these emerging talents–Marios Schwab, Richard Nicoll, Jason Wu come to mind–don’t typically have massive teams to help them complete their workload. Sometimes, their talent allows them to overcome the challenge. Sometimes, it doesn’t.

For Christopher Kane, who designs both his namesake collection and Versace’s Versus, this hasn’t been a problem.
