Dov Charney Says American Apparel Is Getting Its ‘Groove Back’

Watch out, America. Dov Charney is taking a road trip. He’s traveling through the South as we speak, and is obviously trying to convince everyone that American Apparel is staging a comeback/recovery. He’s been in the media a bit lately–like that extended interview he did with Flaunt, telling the indie mag that American Apparel was going to make $20 million in earnings before interest, and was on track to double that in 2012.

WWD caught up with Charney in Texas, where he told the trade, “We’re getting our groove back a bit.” But are they? Let’s review the company’s recent financial history.

American Apparel’s Dov Charney Addresses Sexual Harassment Accusations, What Led the Company to Near-Bankruptcy and Their Plan to Get Back on Track Financially

One of the biggest fashion topics of discussion this year (and the past few years) was American Apparel and its controversy-laden founder and CEO Dov Charney. Since January, Dov and his company have been through a lot. On the controversy end, they’ve showed pubes and boobs in their steadfastly NSFW ad campaigns, faced several very public sexual harassment accusations, held a plus-size modeling competition with a messy outcome and lost an employee to an industrial knitting machine, to name a few of the stories we can recall. In terms of business, they’ve come within inches of bankruptcy, received a $15 million cash injection from a group of Canadian investors, and announced a few efforts to get back on track like launching denim, selling through eBay and Bloomingdale’s and offering third-party merchandise.

While we’ve all heard about AA’s downtown L.A. factory, great wages, and vertically integrated business model, we’re still left with questions about why they’ve struggled so much and what really goes on inside that company–many of which are finally answered in an in-depth piece in the latest issue of fashion glossy Flaunt. Matthew Bedard visited Charney both in Toronto for a company event and AA’s L.A. digs and sheds a light on the company’s most prevalent issues, including the sexual harassment allegations, financial problems and new plans, manufacturing in the U.S. and more. Click through for the most interesting things we learned (and the most incendiary things Charney said).

20 Moments that Rocked the Fashion World in 2011

20 Moments that Rocked the Fashion World in 2011

We’ll cut right to the chase: A lot of crazy shit happened in the fashion world this year. While the industry that we call home can sometimes seem isolated and fantastical, many of its key players and events made headlines even in the mainstream media over the course of 2011.

In the last 365 days, we’ve seen our share of ups and downs: There have been exciting new beginnings and tragic falls from grace. A royal wedding and a Sarah Burton for McQueen dress captivated the world, while Galliano’s dress for Kate Moss made the fashion world swoon. We’ve celebrated the return of older models—like when 46-year-old Kristen McMenamy wore a bikini on the cover of Vogue Italia—and saw plenty of controversy surrounding very young ones. Just when we thought the boundaries of gender identity were breaking for good and that Lea T could kiss Kate Moss on the cover of LOVE, a men’s mag openly calls androgynous model Andrej Pejic a “thing.” We took it all in stride, and we’ve hopefully come out better on the other side.

Looking back at 2011, we’ve chosen twenty major moments that we believe defined the year in fashion. Which one made the biggest impact on you?

ASOS Started Selling American Apparel Today and We Like It

ASOS Started Selling American Apparel Today and We Like It

American Apparel is really, really trying. The company, which we reported earlier will begin to carry other brands, was front-row-and-center on our daily newsletter from ASOS, who has recently started carrying the brand.

According to a press release on PR Newswire, the two companies inked a deal August 9, after a test buy earlier this year resulted in success: “Initial consumer reaction was extremely positive as expected, hitting 100% sell through on first delivery,” Robert Bready, ASOS Product and Trading Director, said in the press release.

As we all know, American Apparel has been in a downward spiral for quite some time now. However, they seem to be on the right path lately, having recently announced plans to also sell their product on eBay and in Bloomingdale’s.

Can Selling Other Brands’ Stuff Save American Apparel?

Can Selling Other Brands’ Stuff Save American Apparel?

According to WWD, American Apparel will now focus on selling third-party merchandise–the latest in the company’s long struggle to stay afloat.

In particular, the brand has plans to reinvigorate it’s accessories department–which currently only account for a small percentage of total sales–by scouting for new, autonomous labels to shill in-store. To that end, Dov Charney and chief business development officer Marty Staff will be visiting trade shows MAGIC and Project later this month (female vendors beware) to suss out what brands they might want to bring into the fold (and what brands are willing). Their footwear department, which the retailer has been steadily growing since launching a few years back, will also benefit from some new additions:

Fashion News Roundup: DKNY’s Million Dollar Perfume, Inappropriate American Apparel T-Shirts, and Jessica Stam’s Unbelievable Beauty Stash

DKNY’s Million Dollar Perfume Bottle: Dubbed the “DKNY Golden Delicious Million Dollar Fragrance Bottle”, it’s designed by jeweler Martin Katz and made of 14-karat yellow and white gold and 2,909 precious stones that form the NYC skyline. It will be sold to benefit the charity Action Against Hunger. {Luxuryes}

Good News For The American Garment Industry: A weak dollar may be bad for travellers, but it’s great for exporting. U.S. brands are moving manufacturing back stateside and both L.A. and New York have seen an increase in apparel manufacturing jobs–800 new jobs in July alone. {WWD}

Dov Charney Is Being Creepy, Again: American Apparel now sells this shirt reading “Teenagers Do It Better,” which goes really nicely with Charney’s multiple sexual harrassment charges (some of which were from actual teenagers). The shirt is a collab with teen mag Electric Youth, also famous for featuring young models in various states of undress. {Styleite}

Fashion News Roundup: Karl Lagerfeld Sans Sunglasses, Dov Charney Invested in a Restaurant and Jay-Z Bought Billionare Boys Club

Here are Karl Lagerfeld’s Eyes: Someone snapped a photograph of Karl Lagerfeld in a rare moment in which he was not wearing sunglasses. It’s kind of freaking us out. He looks completely different, no? Less harsh? He has nice eyes. {Fashionologie}

Your Chanel Might Start a Fire: In other Chanel-related news, the luxury brand just had to recall a ton of merchandise, including 120 scarves and 34 apparel styles, because of flammability issues. {Racked}

Dov Charney’s New Venture: Somehow, in a matter of months, American Apparel CEO Dov Charney went from almost leading his company into bankruptcy to investing in an east village southern-themed hipsteraurant. The Cardinal will open “around August 14″ and a former American Apparel employee and a mustachioed North Carolina-bred musician-turned-chef are behind it. {The Local East Village}

Elle Fanning’s Next Movie: Check out the trailer for TWIXT, Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming film starring Elle Fanning. Her look here seems to be less Virgin Suicides and more vampire punk. {Fashion Copious}

Look: Even Dov Charney Was Just an Innocent Little Kid Once

It’s hard to remember a time when American Apparel founder and CEO Dov Charney was not the subject of controversy, whether it’s for forcing employees into sex slavery, putting out pornographic ad campaigns or repeatedly almost leading his business into bankruptcy. As unimaginable as it is, even people like that were once adorable, naive little kids.

Here are four pictures of a very young Dov Charney, via Copyranter, that were apparently taken by his father in the ’70s. We hope Dov was nothing like he is now, or at least significantly more innocent. Of course, this particular time in Dov’s life must have had an impact, as American Apparel has become known for its laid-back ’70s inspiration. Click through for three more pics.

American Apparel to Launch Shops on eBay and in Bloomingdale’s, Could the Retailer Finally Be Back on Track?

Every season or so, there is some sort of detailed report on the progress of always almost-bankrupt retailer American Apparel. This morning, Dov and his empire are the subject of a WWD piece, the focus of which is AA’s forthcoming e-commerce shop on eBay. However, the online shop-in-shop is only one of several efforts the company is making to increase business. The retailer is also in talks to bring this shop-in-shop method to real life with leased spaces in Bloomingdale’s.

American Apparel is also set to open three additional leased spaces in Selfridges stores in the U.K. And, in a short time, most college apparel could have American Apparel’s signature Made in USA tags on the inside. They’re reportedly close to sealing a deal that could see them supplying clothes for up to 2,500 campuses.

Numbers were looking OK for AA back in May. It really seems like, if all goes according to plan, Dov & co. could finally actually be on the right track.

American Apparel’s First Quarter Wasn’t Too Bad, But Bankruptcy is Still a Possibility

American Apparel’s First Quarter Wasn’t Too Bad, But Bankruptcy is Still a Possibility

Dov Charney and American Apparel released its first quarter results last night, and the numbers weren’t terrible. For the first three months of the 2011 fiscal year, sales were down by 4.7% to $116 million. But the company was able to cut a ton of costs (about $2.2 million) by increasing the productiveness of its sales associates (they’ve got to work now instead of just standing around looking all hipstery) and making its distribution process more efficient. They also received about $14.2 million in additional funding in April, with the possibility of more down the road.

The best news was that online sales increased by over 28% to $10.0 million during the time period.

Good News For Dov Charney: American Apparel Stays Afloat With $15M Cash Injection

Dov Charney’s not going anywhere. At least not anytime soon.

The controversial CEO–who has been accused of sexual harassment by several former employees in recent weeks–has secured financing that will stave off bankruptcy and give the company some breathing room on its debt, WWD is reporting.

The board has approved raising $15 million from a group of Canadian investors, with the option to receive $28 million invested during the next six months, the NY Post is reporting.

Fashion News Roundup: Dov Charney Wants to be Like Hugh Hefner, Dita Von Teese Designs Lingerie, and J.Crew is Opening Across the Pond

Dov Charney Wants to Recreate Hugh Hefner’s Lifestyle Circa 1970: The New York Times‘ piece on Charney is full of interesting tidbits. Ilse Metchek, president of the California Fashion Association and friend of Charney, says that the controversial CEO of American Apparel’s 20-room home is like a “dormitory.” On his front yard? A sculpture of a hand giving the middle finger. How fitting. {NY Times}

The World’s Most Expensive Shoe: Your Louboutins got nothing on these solid gold heels that are encrusted with 2,000 diamonds. The shoe, created by jewelry designer Michael Shellis, are going for a little over $200,000. {Telegraph}

J.Crew is Heading Overseas: The all-American brand plans to open shop in the UK at the end of the summer. {Elle UK}

Models as Mannequins: In the catalog of the upcoming exhibit, “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” at the Met, the photographs of white mannequins in the designer’s creations are actually…real live models. Photographer Solve Sundsbo was able to create the illusion thanks to Photoshop, makeup, and lighting. {Racked}
