Eddie Borgo

As darkness fell on the first day of New York Fashion Week, we headed west to check out some art courtesy of Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld’s curation, and show off our faux fur at PETA’s fashion week party.

The first stop was a warehouse on the desolate Washington Street where Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida were hosting RETNA: The Hallelujah World Tour. The open and dim space smelled of fresh paint (there were splatters of it on the floor) and graffiti artist RETNA’s canvases filled with abstract black and white symbols lined the walls. The crowd, sipping on what we’re pretty sure was straight vodka, was as eclectic as the art itself. Fashion folk like Eddie Borgo and proud mama Carine Roitfeld mingled with a young flock of skateboarders (boards in tow), older women in hulking fur coats, and disheveled yet chic Parisian-looking men.

Gaga Returns the Favor: Nicola Formichetti, Lady Gaga’s stylist, has tapped the popstar to create an original soundtrack for his upcoming menswear show at Thierry Mugler, where he is now the creative director. {WWD}

Is it Oldfield? Is Diana-favorite Bruce Oldfield designing Kate Middleton‘s wedding dress? Who knows, but royal snitches do say that she’s made a decision as to whom will be creating the most-anticipated dress of the century. {The Daily Mail}

Congrats to Billy Reid! The industry veteran, whose story of triumph, retreat, and comeback is one for the fashion books, has been awarded the CFDA Fashion Fund Prize. He’ll receive $300,000 to put towards the growth of his already-impressive business, which includes menswear, womenswear, collaborations with K-Swiss and Levi’s, as well as several retail boutiques.

Runners up Prabal Gurung and Eddie Borgo received $100,000 each. The prizes were upped significantly this year–by $100,000 for the winner, $50,000 for the runners-up. All three designers also received a Rachel Feinstein-designed trophy.

This year, the Fashion Fund’s partner was J.Crew, with additional support from American Express, Appleman Foundation, Barneys New York, Coach, Juicy Couture, Liz Claiborne Inc., Lord & Taylor, L’Oréal Paris, Nordstrom, Theory, and Vogue.

A gaggle of stars, from Carrie Mulligan to Leighton Meester, were in attendance. We’ll post our picks for best dressed tomorrow morning. Another congrats to Billy, Eddie, and Prabal!

Monday’s naag.com launch party at Mary Queen of Scots felt less like a “fashion party” and more like a bunch of cool kids hanging out at a hip LES bar–in a good way.

If you’re wondering what naag.com is, I think it is best described on the site’s Who We Are page: “Naag is Fiona and Aggy and our friends. Talking about things we live and do and see and feel. We live in New York and like to hang out.”

That also pretty much sums up the party. And if its attendees were any indication, their friends are people like Karen Elson, Coco Rocha, Seth Meyers, Christian Siriano, Becka Diamond, Rebecca Minkoff, Eddie Borgo, and, according to the tip sheet, an incognito Marion Cotillard. To compliment the venue’s British theme, AllSaints sponsored and Agyness was dressed head-to-toe in the UK-based brand.

Fashion’s Night Out is two weeks from tomorrow! There is more going on than we can even wrap our heads around. Having trouble deciding where you want to go and who you want to see the most?

Well, if you’re interested in catching a peak of one of your favorite designers, here’s a roundup of where some of the biggest and the best will be on September 10. We’ve excluded most of the people we’ve already reported on. Also, it’s almost safe to say that if someone isn’t on this list, they will probably be at Barneys.

Michael Kors
Michael will be at his lifestyle store on Madison and 61st in New York City. He will be joined by TONY Award winner Idina Menzel, whom Michael will accompany on a selection of songs. Michael will also make an appearance nearby at Bloomingdale’s 59th street, where the “World of Michael” will be created to kick off a new Michael Kors handbag shop-in-shop.

Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy will be kicking off FNO and his brand’s 25th anniversary at Macy’s Herald Square. As we’ve reported, Macy’s will house “The Ultimate Tailgate Party” as inspired by Tommy’s most recent ad campaign. Tommy will be accompanied by Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren. He will also make an appearance at his Fifth Avenue store, where shoppers can have their purchases personalized with an exploding monogram while they shop, listen to DJ Toddlerone and drink up.

Ten American designers just got a lot happier. The CFDA and Vogue announced their ten finalists for the seventh annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund initiative, and we’re pretty pleased with the results (as we’re sure they are as well). Though the process is far from being over–the winner and two runners-up will be announced on November 15–having the list in our hands is enough to make us sit on the edge of our seats. The finalists are as follows:

While I typically wear delicate gold jewelry, lately I’ve been obsessing over chunky, bold earrings that are too beautiful to ignore.

We’re not huge on sparkles, but when talents like menswear great Simon Spurr, Fenton/Fallon jewelry master Dana Lorenz and It-designers Prabal Gurung and Joseph Altuzarra create with crystals, we take notice.

This morning’s breakfast at Swarovski’s Creative Service Center–which is kind of like a candy store for designers who love crystals instead of kids who love sweets–celebrated the new shine-heavy capsule collection created by the foursome, along with Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, Eddie Borgo, Richard Chai and Patrick Ervell. Each designer, natch, is nominated for the CFDA’s Swarovski Award in his or her respective category.

Unlike celebrity-designed fashion labels, we love designer collaborations. Whether it’s about mixing up high- and low-end or simply bringing together two brilliant minds, there’s something inherently special about two great brands producing something new. Next up, it’s Isabel Toledo for Payless ShoeSource. The designer is creating a line of affordable shoes and handbags for the [...]

Nadja Swarovski and Diane von Furstenburg announced the 2010 CFDA nominees at Diane’s studio last night. Diane called Nadja the “godmother” of fashion, and when Nadja suggested that title belongs to Diane, Diane countered, “No! I’m the grandmother!” And she did sound maternal, correcting Nadja’s mispronounced designer names. After reading the nominees, Stephen Kolb took [...]

Precious Cargo: We’ve spotted more than one leather envelope under an editor’s arm in lieu of a bag this season. If Celine and Goyard are too much, or too thin, for you, we’ve recently discovered Phillip Lim’s Berry Bag. It’s tiny, but looks like it could actually hold your life, and we want one. {3.1 [...]
