We’re right smack in the middle of awards season, with the Golden Globes safely behind us. And unlike those complicated braids and tortured updos of previous years, a lot of these are looks that regular people can achieve in the comfort of their own homes without needing five stylists at your beck and call.

From Rooney Mara to Meryl Streep, click through to see the six hair trends we’ve spotted so far–plus a few tips for getting the various looks. Will these trends have staying power over the next few red carpets?

From Diane Lane, to Elle MacPherson to Jane Fonda (seriously, how does she look like that at 74?) last night’s red carpet was owned by the 45+ crowd. And might we say it was a refreshing (and inspiring!) change. Click through to see our favorite looks, from some of our favorite ladies.

Only one question remains: How in the world are they doing it? Is it something in the water? A Death Becomes Her elixir? Benjamin Button disease? Or just lots of money and great plastic surgery? Whatever it is, they’re doing it right.

66-year-old Helen Mirren is already an Oscar winner and a Dame, but she has just earned herself another coveted title: Best Body of the Year.

The LA Fitness health club chain polled over 2,000 people and Mirren beat out such svelte starlets and models as Jennifer Lopez, Elle ‘The Body’ Macpherson, Kelly Brook and Pippa Middleton for the title, the Daily News is reporting. (Don’t worry Pippa got the consolation title “Rear of the Year.”)

When Mirren was snapped in a bikini three years ago, jaws dropped around the world (if you search Helen Mirren in Google, bikini pops up first next to her name–it’s oustered Caligula). That photo undoubtedly has a lot to do with Mirren’s win. She earned 17.7% of the votes while MacPherson came in second with 10.6% percent of votes.

Jessica Simpson is nothing if not a contradiction. Jessica, who started her foray into fame as a singer, became a household name when she was featured on reality show Newlyweds with Nick Lachey; their union famously ended in divorce. While her music career never quite found its footing again, she quietly spawned a fashion empire–despite frequent skewerings in the media for questionable fashion choices (mom jeans!).

Reality TV seems to be her niche now, having just wrapped up Jessica Simpson’s the Price of Beauty, a direct reaction to the mom jean backlash. Then she showed up as a guest judge on the season finale of Project Runway, which proved to be a harbinger of things to come–Jessica Simpson wants to be taken seriously in fashion. Does her billion dollar clothing and accessories empire give her fashion cred finally?

‘Fairytale’ is the word everyone used while walking out of the Louis Vuitton show this afternoon. As if Marc‘s New York show didn’t leave us feeling romantic enough, he outdid himself in Paris. A tent was built around a fountain in the Louvre’s courtyard; the audience sat in a ring around it. The music began [...]

London tabloids are currently in a right uproar – not over Posh, or Lindsay, but yes, Elle MacPherson. And all to do with the look she turned up wearing a couple weeks ago to the new Jaguar launch. I’m 99% sure that’s Miranda Kerr on the left. But I’m only half way through my coffee and three hours deep into a move from Brooklyn into Manhattan and I could be wrong. So we’ll start with a yes. Is she even allowed to model other lingerie? For a department store? Even if she’s best [...]

It amazes us that Scottish designer Graeme Black isn’t more widely known. After all, he was senior designer at Armani for years (not to mention the great Giorgio’s boyfriend for much of that time), and before that Creative Director of Ferragamo. He launched his luxe, very tailored, eponymous label a few years ago. Victoria Beckham’s [...]

The latest member of fashion’s TV takeover? Elle MacPherson. Back to the Limited?

Monday, Oct 27, 2008 / 9:46 AM

bendon the limited look from wwd.jpgBendon, the New Zealand-based lingerie company, is coming to America. Except, they’re coming via The Limited, which we’re all familiar with via trips to Limited Too in fifth grade. And apparently, when we buy lingerie from Elle MacPherson’s Intimates (a personal favorite) and Stella McCartney (a browsing favorite), we’re really buying Bendon re-packaged and repriced via licensing deals.
There are two interesting points to be taken from these facts.
1. That The Limited’s version of Bendon will retail between $35 and $38 for bras, and $14 to $16 for underwear – less than half the price of Elle’s versions, and nowhere near the price stratosphere of Stella’s – meaning, The Limited might pose some stiff competition in the lingerie department very soon, and this may or may not be related to the fact that The Limited is no longer owned by Limited Brands, the parent company of the very overpriced Victoria’s Secret, and so now they’re free to expand in that market.
2. That The Limited has been around since forever, and just now they’ve decided to put out their own lingerie, right when Brian Reyes has decided to do the same, and right when Marc’s decided to put out his first full swimwear line under Marc by Marc. All new ventures in a decidedly shaky market / economy, all new ventures including itty bitty non-clothes.
Coincidence? Or has everyone decided that true shoppers will find a way to drop at least $50 every couple weeks and have just figured out the best way to truly service the price point?
*Editor’s Note: Sorry! Changed that fact at the end of point 1 – The Limited is no longer owned by Limited Brands!
