Kate Middleton, our favorite princess, braved the elements in a pair of $470 (that’s £300) leather lined wellies, paired with Zara jeans this weekend, to go camping with some kids. {Daily Mail}

Sheer, sparkly bodysuits: great in music videos, not so much live on stage as Katy Perry found out at last night’s Much Music awards. {Huffington Post}

Karl Lagerfeld, who loves a high collar, has created a leather one covered in black diamonds and one very large emerald. The price for this one-of-a-kind masterpiece? A mere $46,000, or £29,000. {Vogue UK}

A Review and Preview of the Met’s ‘Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations’ Exhibit

The Costume Institute’s “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” exhibit–you know, the reason for that whole over-the-top Met Gala–opens this Thursday, May 10 and will run through August 19 at the Met. The exhibit explores the similarities between two powerful Italian women designers, Elsa Schiaparelli and Muiccia Prada. Based on Vanity Fair‘s “Impossible Interviews” from the Read more →

The Prada Effect: Why We’re Seeing the 50s Everywhere

The upcoming Met exhibit entitled Impossible Conversations involves a sort of rally back and forth between the creations of former visionary Elsa Schiaparelli and current trendsetter Miuccia Prada. The pairing originally raised a few eyebrows.

There are some glaring differences between these two Italian women – time being the most obvious one. Schiaparelli closed up shop in 1954, and though innovative and highly influential, she does not have much as much of a direct conversation with the industry or women today as she once did. Meanwhile, Prada is very much alive and thriving. The brand has tremendous cultural recognition–and is in conversation, so to speak, with the industry all the time. Prada’s influence is impossible to ignore. So when Miuccia wanted 50s glam and tapped fellow tastemaker and frequent collaborator Steven Meisel to plunk models in a gas station for the spring campaign, we should have realized the ripple effect this would have on fashion imagery.

25 Women Designers Who Changed Fashion Forever

25 Women Designers Who Changed Fashion Forever

The upcoming Costume Institute exhibit and Monday’s Met Ball honors two of fashion’s most beloved women designers: Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. But what about the other female names that have helped to change fashion forever?

Recently, Style.com‘s Nicole Phelps noted that in New York fashion today there is a surprising lack of big-name female designers, which begged the question: “Is it easier to succeed in New York fashion as a man?” Phelps certainly has a point: After all, in the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s eight year history, the prize has only been awarded to women designers twice.

The dearth of female designers in New York is particularly disheartening, when you consider the important role women have played in shaping fashion’s past and present. From Coco Chanel, to Phoebe Philo, female designers have provided a fresh–and needed–perspective on fashion and in many cases, they changed the industry as we know it.

So, in honor of those women that have blazed the trail in fashion design, we take a look at the 25 most influential female designers, with the help of Parsons’ Francesca Granata and Pratt’s Jennifer Minniti. Click through and get inspired.

Baz Luhrmann To Direct Film for Met Exhibit Starring Miuccia Prada and Judy Davis as Elsa Schiaparelli

There’s an interesting new multi-media twist to the Met’s upcoming “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” exhibit. In addition to the exhibit itself and a book (which Katie Grand appears to be involved in), there will be an accompanying film in which Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada have their “impossible conversation,” made into a possible one Read more →

Fashion News Roundup: Abbey Lee Kershaw May Be in a Spielberg Film, There Are More Details About the Prada/Schiaparelli Met Exhibit, and Angelina Jolie Covers Vogue Turkey

The Other Missing Model: Though we all miss Karlie, many have been surprised this season at the lack of Abbey Lee Kershaw on the runways. Turns out she’s having knee surgery tomorrow (ouch!). The model has been plagued with knee issues for years, and we certainly wish her a speedy recovery. But there’s also a rumor she’s working on the next Spielberg film – something her New York Agency Next Model Management did not confirm or deny. {Frockwriter}

Ferragamo Partners with the Louvre: The Italian brand has announced that it will be the exclusive sponsor of the upcoming exhibit “Saint Anne, Leonardo da Vinci’s Ultimate Masterpiece,” running from March 29 to June 25 at the Louvre. In an historic move, Ferragamo will show Resort on June 12 in the Denon wing, the first time the Louvre has allowed a fashion show within the museum itself. Chairman Ferruccio Ferragamo considers the sponsorship “a great honor.” {WWD}

Angelina’s Face Covers Vogue Turkey: She’s not just a pretty (and hilarious) leg. Jolie looks fantastic on the cover of this month’s Turkish edition of Vogue, reminding everyone that her face is just as worthy of attention as her gams. {ONTD}

UPDATE, Prada Refutes Story: Miuccia Prada Slams Her Upcoming Met Exhibit

UPDATE, Prada Refutes Story: Miuccia Prada Slams Her Upcoming Met Exhibit

If you thought the Met Institute’s upcoming exhibit honoring both Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada seemed like a random pairing, well, that’s because it kind of is. And according to WWD, Miuccia Prada is not happy about it.

“It’s too formal. They are focused on similarities, comparing feather with feather, ethnic with ethnic, but they are not taking into consideration that we are talking about two different eras, and that [Schiaparelli and I] are total opposite.” she told WWD, of the exhibit. “I told them, but they don’t care.”

Prada has a point:
