A Delicate Piercing Craze Sweeps the Fashion Set

With the upcoming Costume Institue exhibit and Met ball set to celebrate punk style, I wanted to look a little closer at the delicate piercing craze New York Adorned’s J. Colby Smith has spawned within the fashion community. Piercing is a hallmark of punk style–in the safety pin through an ear kind of way. And Colby himself is an admitted punk.

The Most Influential Personal Style Bloggers Right Now

Some say the age of the personal style blogger is over.

Today, the girl needs more than an outfit, a boyfriend, and a camera. Bloggers need to think about production quality, editorial strategy, and affiliate programs to really gain a foothold on the web. They are more like editors, creating publications worthy of a million-person audience than a few thousand super-fans.

Yet it still comes down that camera. Nine times out of 10, the bloggers who move merchandise, who get people talking, who attract repeat advertisers, love to strike a pose.

So we say the personal style blogger isn’t going anywhere—-in fact, she’s more powerful than ever.

More Magazine Shakeups: Another Departure From Elle, and Alex White to Vogue?

Lately, the fashion industry has seemed like one big ever-revolving glass door–It feels like practically every day a new hire (or fire) is announced.

The latest shakeup involves Elle‘s senior fashion news editor Nick Axelrod, who is leaving the womens mag to join Emily Weiss at Into the Gloss. And, from the sounds of it, we can expect the beauty website to continue making more exciting new hires.

“ITG is growing and we are constantly experimenting, aiming to do something new,” Weiss told us. “I’ve always wanted ITG to be a resource and a destination that inspires readers with beauty stories, and to really give beauty the airtime it deserves–and maybe even turn it on its head a little bit.”

“I think Into The Gloss is one of those sites that perfectly fuses what I love about magazines and what’s so exciting about the web,” Axelrod said. “I started in print and I’ll always love print, but this just felt like the right next step for me. I wanted to do something entrepreneurial and with ITG, the possibilities of what we can do are endless.”

What I Saw at Paris Fashion Week: Day 1

OK, so today wasn’t technically day one of Paris fashion week. Anthony Vaccarello started the week off with a bang yesterday–Karlie Kloss‘ first appearance of the season and falling models, oh my!–and Cedric Charlier debuted his first solo collection. But things really got started today. From vintage Zandra Rhodes on the runway for the first Read more →

Surface to Air Party: Ziggy from The Wire Hits the Fashion Week Scene

As the night wore on (and a monsoon raged outside), Surface to Air revelers made their way from the store’s new flagship to the late-90s staple B Bar on Bowery. By the time we got there, we were soaked to the bone, but somehow all the lovelies and trendsters miraculously managed to stay fresh and dry through their transit. Another 90s reference of the night–lots of guys toting bulky backpacks, which got to be kind of a bitch navigation-wise as the bar got crowded.

We spotted Surface to Air co-founder Jérémie Rozan schmoozing with his party people, plus DJ/fashion girl Mia Moretti, Genevieve Jones, and Emily Weiss (who did a drive-by for some champers and photo ops), editor of the Fashionista-awarded “Best Fashion-y Beauty Blog” Into the Gloss. Kid Cudi himself stopped by later, along with Chromeo, who performed for the pumped up crowd.

On our way out, to our pleasant surprise, we bumped into James “PJ” Ransone. Who, you ask? Well, hipster subway commuters may recognize as the denim-clad guy in those Opening Ceremony x Levi’s ads, but fans of The Wire know him as tragic, trigger-happy longshoreman Ziggy Sobotka.

Our Writer Didn’t Wash Her Hair For Six Days and It Looks Awesome

I became giddy with curiosity a few weeks back when reading a piece on Into the Gloss about the beauty escapades of Proenza Schouler’s CEO, Shirley Cook. The fashion insider advocated not washing your hair, claiming that in doing so her follicle woes had permanently vanished. She told ITG’s Emily Weiss that her tresses “don’t get greasy” and in lieu of shampooing she’s a fan of Moroccan Oil’s miracle treatments. So in an effort to rescue the few salvageable strands of hair on my head–those which haven’t been marred by daily attempts at undoing the Jew ‘do–I viewed finals week at FIT (where I’m a student) as the perfect opportunity to take “The Shirley Cook Challenge.”

Thanks to Weiss and Cook, you too have an excuse not to wash your hair, whether because of laziness, exhaustion, damaged tresses or, like me, all three. Luckily last week’s frizzy weather coincided with the 18.5 credits worth of exams I’d be taking, so in the name of research and necessity I put my locks up to Cook’s test.
