Erin Wasson On Her New Line for Zadig & Voltaire, Working With Alexander Wang Again, and Reality TV

Erin Wasson On Her New Line for Zadig & Voltaire, Working With Alexander Wang Again, and Reality TV

PARIS–It makes perfect sense that French boutique Zadig & Voltaire recently opened their fourth location in New York (on 409 Bleecker). Their bad ass not-trying-too-hard French girl aesthetic is a perfect fit for the city.

So Zadig & Voltaire has enlisted NYC scenesters Erin Wasson (who is also the face of their current campaign) and Gaia Repossi to design capsule collections for the brand, and both ladies were on hand this week at Zadig & Voltaire’s flagship store in Paris this week to discuss their collections. I sat down with Wasson to ask her about her forthcoming capsule collection for the brand (it will be out in October), and what it was like to be a judge on America’s Next Top Model and work with Alexander Wang again. (Repossi, unfortunately had to run before I had a chance to talk with her because she brought her exotic kitten to the store and it got finicky and she had to take it home. Really, this happened. You can take a look at her lovely creations for the store below.)

Fashionista: Why partner with Zadig & Voltaire?
Erin Wasson: I’m really excited to work with Zadig & Voltaire because I feel like we have a parallel aesthetic. I remember going into my first design meeting and the culmination of my inspiration pictures and their inspiration pictures–a lot of what gets our rocks off is very similar. We’re both into the days of old, that rock n’ roll spirit. Working for them is easy–for me it just makes sense.

You’ve designed before with RCVA and currently design your own jewelry collection, Low Luv. How will this be different?
To tell you truth I’m not trying to do anything different. I’m not trying to come out with a capsule that’s going to blow anyone’s mind and change the world of fashion. What I’m trying to do is just make clothes that are easy and that have an edge. It’s like designing that piece of clothing that you’ve gone to 15 thrift stores looking for that you could never find–I’m trying to design that one piece.

10 Questions for America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 16

1. Is Tyra talking faster than normal? And does this remind anyone of her short-lived stint on Fresh Prince? We’ve also got to give Tyra credit for her spot on and hilarious imitations of Top Model contestants. To wit: “My favorite designer is Hello Kitty,” “I am Angora Nylandra Tafatia Michaels,” and my favorite, “I’m not a cookie cutter, I cut the cookies, and I’ll cut you.”

2. Plus size is now “fiercely real”–got it?

3. What happened to all the rejects who thought they’d been selected as finalists?

4. Jaclyn has more of a baby voice than a baby face, no? I like her hair.

Brad Goreski Could Be Your Fashion Week Chauffeur And Other Wacky NYFW Sponsorship News

New York Fashion Week’s corporate sponsors are very important because more often than we’d like to admit they provide our meals for the week (thank you Frappuccino and Pop Chips–not so much Muscle Milk). Here are this coming fashion week’s sponsors, as per IMG’s latest release: Mercedes-Benz (duh), DHL, American Express, Maybelline New York, TRESemmé, Starbucks Frappuccino Coffee Drink, W Hotels Worldwide, AOL, Diet Pepsi, Kim Crawford Wines, ideeli, the Heart Truth Campaign, Fiji water, and the New York Times. It’s the same old crew for the most part, but their approach to sponsorship has gotten more innovative and in some cases, just plain weird.

Most notably, Mercedes-Benz has hired Brad Goreski to go on “patrol” in the brand’s new 2012 CLS 63 AMG to seek out “stylesetters with fresh, creative design looks and alluring appeal,” and award them for superior styling with a ride to their next show. Goreski will be supported by a team of “Fashion Enforcers,” and Lauren is one of them. She will carry a nightstick along with her Chanel 2.25 so get your game outfits on (JK!). What’s more, “a lucky few will receive an invitation to the culmination event in the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge.” Even more incentive to look your best and be cold and pained in too-high heels during fashion week!

Other fun sponsorship gimmicks:

More News on Erin Wasson’s Departure from RVCA
People Are Talking

More News on Erin Wasson’s Departure from RVCA

We’ve got more dirt on the Erin Wasson and RVCA break-up.

According to sources inside the company, RVCA dropped Erin Wasson because her team was too hard to work with. “Total chaos and the epitome of unorganized,” according to one person we spoke with. We know, what a shocker.

The Costa Mesa, Calif.-based skate brand–which as we mentioned yesterday, was acquired last week by behemoth Billabong–will be focusing more on its other collaborations, like the one with Fashion Toast’s Rumi Neely. Funny thing is, Neely is essentially a Wasson knock-off, at least when it comes to personal style.

We finally heard back from Erin’s team; they have “no comment.”

Fashion’s Football Fantasies

In an ideal world, we’d march down Spring Street, buy the Chanel football at left, slice it open, pull out whatever’s inside of a football, add a zipper and voila! We’d have our very own Chanel-to-Wang clutch. But we’re not billionaires, and in reality, it’d probably be ugly. So instead we’ve pictured three of this Read more →

Slashing it Up

Erin Wasson already has a few slashes in her job title: model/designer/jewelry maker. Now, you may have varying opinions about her abilities and/or creativity at the last two there. But soon, you’ll have something new to critique. In a completely unoriginal move, Ms. Wasson has said she’ll soon be trying her hand at acting. Hey, Read more →

Phi to Close

We’d rather have a slow news day any time than get bad news like this—Phi is closing due to economic hardship, according to WWD. There aren’t many details yet, but sadly we all know too well what this recession has done to our industry. Employees were given the news today and the pre-Spring collection that Read more →
