In Honor of Mark Zuckerberg’s 28th Birthday, Here are 28 Pictures of Him Wearing a Hoodie

We have to hand it to Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg: At just twenty-eight years old, he’s literally transformed the way our universe works, one HTML code– and hoodie– at a time. And like many of today’s greatest designers, Zuck has a signature uniform that’s appropriate (well, sort of appropriate) for nearly every occasion, from public Read more →

Facebook Meets Fashion: New Retail Initiative Displays Real Time Facebook Likes on Clothes Hangers

Many of us rely (at least partially) on our fashionable friends’ opinions of potential purchases when we’re shopping. But what if you find yourself on a solo spree? Sure, there are tons of fashion apps that let you share sartorial snaps for your biddies to rate, but many stores don’t allow photography. For all of you rule-abiding, approval-seeking customers, one store may have a solution you’ll ‘Like.’

Why Pro-Anorexic Content Still Flourishes On Sites That Have Banned It and Who’s Really To Blame

Why Pro-Anorexic Content Still Flourishes On Sites That Have Banned It and Who’s Really To Blame

Facebook, Tumblr and Pinterest have all banned so-called “thinspirational” images–but has it really helped? That’s the question many news outlets, including New York Daily News, Jezebel, and Mashable are asking–and with good reason.

But while the question may be on everybody’s lips, the answers are far from forthcoming. “I think its too soon to tell [if the banning of thinspo images will have a large impact on the pro-ana community],” Lynn S. Grefe, MA, President and CEO of the National Eating Disorders Association, told me over the phone.

While Mashable claims Pinterest has done “little-to-nothing to edit out the pro-anorexia content,” siting the fact that hundreds of images still come up when you search a tag like “thinspo,” it’s worth remembering that Pinterest’s new terms of use only went into effect on April 6, and that successfully policing the images is going to be a slow process. Officially banning the content, regardless of how immediately effective that new policy is, is certainly the first step.

“I really have to applaud [Pinterest and Tumblr] for working with us and for making the effort,” Grefe said. “I think it’s huge that they did it. It needed to be done but a lot more needs to be done.”

Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia and Google Buzz Coming to A Sneaker Near You

Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia and Google Buzz Coming to A Sneaker Near You

In this day and age, everyone can probably admit to being just a wee bit addicted to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. (Go on, you can admit it. This is a safe space.) So it’s only natural that our internet obsessions would find their way into our wardrobes one day.

And friends, that day is today. Copyranter found these genius social-media-themed Keds, designed by graphic designer Lumen Bigott. Biggot created four styles designed to rep our favorite social mediate sites: Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia and Google Buzz, and they are amazing.

Sadly they are still concept-only and have no prospect of going into production. But we have faith that will change soon (pretty, please?), because c’mon, who wouldn’t want to wear a Facebook friend request on their feet all day!?

So Keds, we hope you’re listening. You need to get on this shit already!

Click through to see all the styles.

Here Are the Top Ten Fashion Brands That Are Conquering the Digital Realm (Plus the Brands That Aren’t and Should Be)

Fashion has been notoriously slow to take to the online world (particularly on the editorial side), but some brands are really getting it right. A smart digital strategy can translate to brand awareness, and ultimately, lots of sales.

L2‘s Digital IQ Index took this concept to the next level and released its third annual report card assessing brands’ “digital IQ.” The ratings they give range from Genius to Feeble. Digital strategy is often uneven, and this can hurt a brand. Per the report: “Although 94 percent of brands in the Index have a presence on Facebook, one in five brands still lacks e-commerce capability.” How annoying is it to try to buy something online, only to discover you actually have to leave your home? That kind of thing really matters to consumers these days.

So who’s excelling online and who needs a lot of help? Here’s the top ten list:

Gwyneth Paltrow ‘Enters the 21st Century,’ Joins Facebook and Twitter

Our online dose of Gwyneth Paltrow wisdom has been thus far limited to her weekly GOOP newsletter and various clips of her doing ridiculous things on talk shows, like rapping. Not anymore. Gwyneth is taking the world of social media by storm–she just opened Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Her first tweet and Facebook wall post are the same–a video of her walking down an NYC street holding her phone at a not-so-flattering angle, giggling about how she has entered the 21st century.

GIGANTIC NEWS (Not Really): We’re Switching to Facebook’s Commenting System

GIGANTIC NEWS (Not Really): We’re Switching to Facebook’s Commenting System

Dear loyal commenters,

We’ve decided to switch commenting systems from Disqus to Facebook. We’re doing this because we want to provide you with the best tool out there, and we think Facebook is it. (For now.) Starting tomorrow, you’ll comment on Fashionista through your Facebook account. Lots of other sites, including Tech Crunch, have been using Facebook’s system for a few months.

We can’t really explain how to use the Facebook comments because there really isn’t anything to explain. It looks like a regular commenting system, except that you have to log into your Facebook account to use it. We hope that it’ll make it easier for you to have conversations about Fashionista stories with more of your friends, not just those who spend tons of time trolling the site.

We heart you guys and want you to keep commenting, so if there is anything annoying/difficult about the new system, feel free to email me on lauren@fashionista.com. Or you can voice your concerns in…the comments.

The Gap is Giving Away 10,000 Pairs of Jeans Via Facebook

Gap is teaming up with Facebook to give its fans some free stuff. Well, lots of free stuff. Today, Facebook announced at its mobile event in Palo Alto, Calif. that the specialty retailer would give away a pair of jeans to the first 10,000 people who checked in on an upcoming day. (The specific date has yet to be disclosed.) Those who check in after the first 10,000 will receive 40% off a pair of jeans.

This is part of Facebook’s new “deals” program, which works a lot like Foursquare’s “deals” program. Checking into Facebook via your mobile phone will soon mean getting discounts at many of the shops you’re visiting.

New Site Style Trek is “Facebook Meets Net-A-Porter For Emerging Designers”

New Site Style Trek is “Facebook Meets Net-A-Porter For Emerging Designers”

Style Trek, a new hybrid e-commerce and social networking site, launched this week. Founder Cecilia Pagkalinawan, who previously helped market and launch ecommerce for Burberry, Frette and La Perla, describes the site as “Facebook meets Net-A-Porter for emerging designers.”

The site currently features collections from 20 designers across the globe, and the plan is to add more designers in the coming months. To call them all “emerging” designers would be a bit misleading though. Some, like Nicole Noselli and Daphne Gutierrez who design Bruce, are better described as “re-emerging”–their line Bruce picked up a CFDA award back in 2001, they took a break for a while, and now they’re back. Mexican design duo Rafa Cuevas and Roberto Sanchez’s line Teamo (as in “te amo”) is big in Mexico but they’re looking to reach consumers in the states. Pagkalinawan finds designers through tips from industry insiders. Buyers pass along designers they like but can’t stock because they’re either too small or they’ve already reached capacity for their contemporary floors. Hopefully, they find a home on Style Trek.

While most ecommerce sites simply curate merchadise, Style Trek aims to allow shoppers and designers to communicate and engage with one another. Designers have profile pages so consumers get a better sense of the personality behind the product. Consumers can become “Style Trekkers” and create their own profiles to connect with other shoppers and designers, and “like” products, which allows Style Trek to track trends and adjust inventory accordingly.
