Fashion News Roundup: Tough Times for Ungaro, Date Set for Fashion’s Night Out 2012, and Designers are Putting Dragons on Everything

Ungaro Can’t Catch a Break: It hasn’t been a good start to 2012 for Emanuel Ungaro, which announced that, in addition to not being able to deliver its spring collection to retailers, it also won’t be presenting a fall collection at fashion week and has canceled all appointments for pre-fall. Current owner Asim Abdullah vaguely stated that the brand is going through an “internal reorganization” that will allow for Ungaro to become “profitable in the near future.” Hmm… This seems suspiciously (and perfectly) timed for former Ungaro guest-designer Lindsay Lohan’s 2012 comeback. Coincidence? {WWD}

Fashion’s Night Out Is Happening Again–So How Do Retailers Feel About It?

Fashion’s Night Out Is Happening Again–So How Do Retailers Feel About It?

Love it or hate it, Fashion’s Night Out is slated to return this coming September for the fourth year in a row. While organizers can’t commit to a date yet because fashion week schedules are still being worked out, it is usually held on the first Thursday evening of New York Fashion Week. Which means it will most likely take place on either September 6 or September 13 in 2012. Stores who wish to participate can start registering this spring.

Anna Wintour’s pet project has grown exponentially since it first debuted in 2009. Most recently, a slew of Vogue magazine editors descended upon Tokyo for its post-tsunami comeback FNO–more than 400 retailers in Japan participated. It’s expected that about 250 US stores will participate this year.

After this last FNO, we asked: Do people actually shop? Is it worth it?

Anna Wintour Gets All Feminist On Us (and We Like It); Talks Japanese Street Style

As you may have heard, Japan’s Fashion’s Night Out took place on Saturday and, thanks to a big push from Anna Wintour, was one of the biggest ever produced. 400 retailers participated, as did the top editors from all of the Vogues internationally. Designers like Michael Kors, Burberry’s Christopher Bailey, Roberto Cavalli, Derek Lam, Thom Browne, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim came out to show their support as well.

Despite the many recognizable fashion faces in Tokyo this weekend, Wintour was the one who “ascended to rock star status,” according to WWD (of course she’s ‘big in Japan’). Apparently, shoppers were following her, yelling her name and constantly snapping photos. But the Conde team wasn’t just there for photo ops. They were there to support Japan in reinvigorating their retail business post-earthquake and take in Japanese fashion.

According to WWD, Conde chairman Jonathan Newhouse broke into song at one of the FNO events and Wintour, after visiting with several local designers, told the Wall Street Journal all about her enthusiasm for Japanese fashion and the role it has globally. Plus, she had some interesting–and commendable–things to say about the criticism placed on women in positions of power in response to Japanese Cabinet Minister Renho’s controversial Vogue photoshoot from last year.

Fashion’s Night Out Is Tons O’ Fun, But Do People Actually Buy Stuff? We Hit the Streets and Polled the Crowds to Find Out

Fashion’s Night Out Is Tons O’ Fun, But Do People Actually Buy Stuff? We Hit the Streets and Polled the Crowds to Find Out

Last night, we hit the NYC streets to take in Fashion’s Night Out in all it’s glory. We saw lots of great stuff from Miss Piggy to Justin Bieber to The Roots. What we didn’t see? A whole lot of shopping bags–which made us wonder: Does Fashion’s Night Out really work? The answer is: Well, sort of.

We asked a random sampling of roughly 100 people, from events spread all around the city, and found that nearly 70% of party-goers hadn’t purchased anything. “We’re out more to take it in, experience the night than to shop,” 22-year-old student Elsa Goh told us.

“It’s too crazy to get into anywhere to shop,” said a trio of girls in SoHo, Shala (Astoria, Queens), Juliana (Manhattan) and Wira (Harlem).

For many, the night’s value lies in the festivities (and free alcohol), rather than the retail opportunities. “People just come for the drinks,” said Morgan Cros, a 27-year-old Brooklynite.
