The legendary designer chatted for two hours last night with Fern Mallis at the 92Y.
Last night, Fern Mallis sat down with Suzy Menkes for the latest installment of her “Fashion Icon” series at 92Y.
The noted fashion critic candidly (and sometimes hilarious) addressed everything from catching an upskirt view of Madonna sans underwear at the Met Gala, why she didn’t like Punk: Chaos to Couture, and why she was surprised by the negative response to her controversial “Circus of Fashion” piece.
The Tribeca Film Festival is well underway and while Hollywood execs are tuning in to see the movies, we’re focused on the red carpet.
Let it never be said that Vera Wang doesn’t know how to work a crowd.
The designer may have had a plane waiting for her at Teterboro Airport following last night’s installment of “Fashion Icons” with Fern Mallis at the 92Y–she had top secret Oscar fittings in Los Angeles, of course–but she kept us all captivated during her talk with tales of her parents’ upbringing in China, her career in figure skating, and how fashion became her life.
Things that happened at Betsey Johnson‘s ‘Fashion Icon’ discussion with Fern Mallis at the 92nd Street Y last night: Cartwheels, flashing, and some talk of bankruptcy.
Eila Mell literally wrote the book on Project Runway. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a scoffer, the very fact that so many people know about the show and have an opinion about it means that it’s a pop culture phenom. But how much has it really influenced fashion? We’re letting Mell tell you in Read more →
The Clothes: Michael Kors always uses “student work” as an insult to designers on Project Runway, but it was definitely not applicable here. The FIT students who sent work their work down the runway deserved to be at NYFW. The mini collections were filled with intricate knit work, beading, beautiful fabrics, and detailed craftmanship. The controversy over Ralph Lauren’s Chinese-produced Team USA uniforms has raised a bigger question in the fashion community: Is making affordable clothing in America a feasible option for any designer? That was the hot issue for some of the designers and fashion personalities who attended the Project Runway 10th Anniversary Party held in Chelsea last night–and while most agreed that the Team USA uni production ideally should’ve happened domestically, the empathetic laments about the cost (and feasibility) of producing locally proved to be a common thread.
Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet touched on Lauren (whom she called “pretty friggin’ awesome”) being unfairly singled out for this “misshap”
Last night Fern Mallis interviewed Michael Kors as the last installment of her ‘Fashion Icons’ series at the 92nd Street Y. Not only is Kors one of the most prolific (and most likable) designers, but he’s also one of the most quotable.
Mallis asked Kors about everything from changing his name (he was born Karl Anderson Jr.) to meeting his husband Lance Le Pere (previously a Kors’ intern) and Kors’ answers were thoughtful and funny. Audience members laughed, applauded, and even aww-ed (“What makes me smile? Lance makes me smile,” Kors responded to one question) as the designer talked about his life and work.

Last night we were lucky to be able to catch “Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis” at the 92nd Street Y here in NYC. The subject? None other than the fascinating Tom Ford. An hour and a half passed in the blink of an eye as Ford and Mallis parried back and forth, hitting pretty much Read more →
“I’m so awesomely proud to show off our SCAD student work here in New York City with our incredible partners of Hugo Boss,” Michael Fink, SCAD’s dean of fashion explained at a dinner this week celebrating the school’s latest Etoile Award recipient: Hugo Boss CEO, Mark Brashear. Held at the Mallick Williams & Co gallery, which is currently exhibiting a display of Jeremy Kost’s jigsaw Polaroids, the event served as a platform to show off some of the school’s senior theses, which will take to the runway on May 19th in Savannah.
“I’ve gone down there twice now, I just love the whole Savannah thing–they just own the whole town. I couldn’t be more impressed with the programs and the quality of the work,” Fern Mallis said.
We ran into one of our fave designers, the pink-tressed Chris Benz (and Parsons alum), last night at the 2012 Parsons Fashion Benefit, which raises scholarships for Parsons students. He was his usual chatty self and was more than happy to dish on his experiences as a student and interning, and his date for the upcoming Met Ball:
