gap pure

Gap still hasn’t named a creative director to replace Patrick Robinson, who was fired in May of last year. But the brand has quietly been building on its strengths–their 1969 denim line keeps getting better (have you tried their printed skinny jeans yet? Do it now) and now they’re expanding GapBody into a new line called GapPure, which is online now and launches in store on Monday.

GapBody–Gap’s underwear line–has a devoted following. At a dinner at ABC Kitchen Thursday night to celebrate the launch of the line, more than a few editors confessed their love for Gap bras (especially their strapless ones). To capitalize on that brand devotion, GapBody has expanded with GapPure, a line of slouchy super soft jersey basics–tees, knits (with hints of cashmere), and tanks–that are comfy enough to lounge around in but cute enough to go to brunch in, too. Think T by Alexander Wang but at prices that range from $24 to $68.

Georgia May Jagger and Jerry Hall for H&M: No Sears family portraits for this lot! Here’s Jerry Hall and her equally gorgeous daughter Georgia May Jagger posing in H&M’s new campaign. Wonder if they got any matted and framed? Or on a key chain. {HuffPo}

Jaeger Designing Uniforms For Will and Kate’s Home: The beloved British heritage brand will be designing the new uniforms for the royal couple’s front of house team at Kensington Palace. Guess that means I’ll have to find someone else to design mine…. {Telegraph}

Rachel Zoe Won’t Let Jennifer Garner Wear Maternity: The super stylist has apparently banned Jen from wearing maternity clothes to events, but with four more months to go, Garner says it’s going to have to happen “sooner or later.” Or she could just go the Jamie Lynn Spears route and wear really huge t-shirts. {InStyle}

There’s no denying it–Gap has faced tough times this past year. They fired Patrick Robinson, the creative director and face of the brand (and still haven’t named a successor), there was that whole logo change fiasco, and shares fell 15.5% based on reports in WWD this past May.

Gap’s 1969 denim line has been the bright spot–their colored and animal print jeans are seriously awesome (really go get some, they’re only $70 bucks and I can personally vouch for the light blue leopard print ones). And their spring collection, which we previewed during New York fashion week, looks promising; we loved the perfectly tweaked basics, shoes, and color blocked dresses. But, still, Gap could use a boost, something to revitalize the brand. Something like a really really good collaboration. One with someone like Isabel Marant.

The Gap went through some tough times this year. They fired Patrick Robinson, the creative director and face of the brand (and still haven’t named a successor), and then there was that whole logo change fiasco.

So we’re happy to report, after taking a tour through Gap’s spring collection yesterday, that the retailer is back on track. They’ve returned to the casual Americana that made them a staple in everyone’s wardrobe. It’s back to the basics–jeans, tees, cotton dresses, striped sweaters–but with a focus on making them true quality stand-bys you can rely on and mix with your fancier designer pieces. There’s an emphasis on comfort, but not at the cost of style.

The woes of adapting to a new season never seem to end when you’re short on savings and want everything that shows up on the runways. It’s tough to update a wardrobe without spending a ton, especially in this city. The key is prioritizing: decide what’s worth splurging on, what you’re going to skip (you don’t need to sport EVERY trend–you’ll look maniacal), and what’s trendy but not worth a large price tag. Easier said than done? Here’s a guide to some of the season’s biggest looks from easily-accessible retailers, all under $50 (with a few exceptions).

Usually, it’s editorial shakeups that get us all confused and inspire us to create befuddling charts and guides to recap and (at least attempt to) make sense of movement within the fashion industry. Lately, however, it seems that most of the movement is taking place at big fashion houses. Whether it’s the economy or designers getting burnt-out, it seems like a top level position opens (or gets filled) every week.

From Galliano’s exit from Dior to Marios Schwab’s from Halston (which happened so recently we didn’t have a chance to include it), here’s our little visual guide to the recent ins and outs at major fashion houses.

I’m a huge advocate of staples. Most of my wardrobe is dedicated to button downs, blazers and black tights, which I jazz up with semi-insane accessories (including a collection of fedoras, men’s denim biker vest with an eagle on the back, leopard fur coat). I’m of the opinion that a solid white tee and crisp, cuffed jean shorts can make the best outfit when styled right. But not all staples are created equal, and it can be difficult to navigate one’s way through a sea of solids. Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons of the basics at several accessible retail giants.

It’s no shock that our favorite thing about the Gap right now is the Pierre Hardy-designed shoe collection. Sadly, we’ve heard from up high that the French cobbler is not working working on a fall capsule for the specialty retailer.

J.Lo’s Biggest Failure: Jennifer Lopez says the biggest disappointment of her career has been her failed fashion lines. ““I just felt like I never got a fair chance to do it right.” PS: Tommy Hilfiger is one of the backers of her new Kohl’s collection with husband Marc Anthony. {NYTimes}
