Evolution of the Slash: A Retrospective of Models-Turned-Actresses

Beauty and fame often go hand-in-hand, so it makes sense that models and actresses seem to be forever trading places.

The latest model to make the jump to acting is Erin Wasson, who we got a first look at in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter today. And she’s following in the footsteps of some of acting’s biggest names, like Mila Jovovich and Cameron Diaz, who got their start as models. But while the model-turned-actress is certainly not a new breed, there seem to have been even more slashes emerging recently: Gemma Ward, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Brooklyn Decker, for instance, have all made the jump. And the new Mad Max movie (Mad Max: Fury Road) is almost cast entirely with models: former model Charlize Theron and more current ones Abbey Lee and Rosie Huntington Whitely are all set to star.

And while the model/actress transition is certainly not rare–it can be hard to pull off (see: Cindy Crawford in Fair Game).

Click through for our round-up of the most memorable models-turned-actresses.

First Look: Gemma Ward in The Great Gatsby

Here’s something we just spotted on Tumblr claiming to be a photo of model-cum-actress Gemma Ward on the set of the Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, which has been filming in Ward’s native Australia. This would be a first look at Ward in her role of Catherine, Myrtle Wilson’s (played by Isla Fisher) sister. Although Read more →

All the edginess, none of the advertising censorship. It’s so good. {W}

Taylor Tomasi-Hill Models for Block Magazine: The flame-haired Marie Claire editor finally gets a chance to shine somewhere other than street style blogs, showing off the best of the fall collections in a really gorgeous (and lengthy!) spread. {Fashion Gone Rogue}

A Gold Sculpture of Kate Moss Doing Yoga Sold For $910,496: I mean, who wouldn’t shell out nearly a million for an 18 karat gold Kate Moss looking like a pretzel? {Vogue UK}

Fashion News Roundup: Models On The Big Screen, Buy H&M Online Today Only, and McQueen: Savage Beauty In London Rumor

Rumor: McQueen: Savage Beauty Going To London? A McQueen spokesperson said there have been tentative talks with some London venues but an official announcement will be made if/when they reach a decision. Though there’s no comment from the Met, this sounds like something, if not the exact exhibit, is in the works! {Telegraph}

Elle and H&M One-Day-Only E-Commerce: Starting at noon today you can buy four looks from H&M’s fall collection on Elle’s website. An H&M spokesperson said it’s a preview of their full e-commerce launching next spring. Don’t worry if it sells out though–the full fall collection hit stores in two days. {WWD}

Models In Film: Gemma Ward and Dree Hemingway Cast In Films: Ward was recently cast in the upcoming production of The Great Gatsby (fingers crossed for her as Jordan), and now there are reports that Hemingway will star in the film adaptation of Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You alongside Lucy Liu. The fall cinema lineup is looking good! {Modelinia}

Rei Kawakubo Isn’t Excited About Fashion Anymore: She told the Wall Street Journal that “there are not enough of us believing in the same thing, that there is a kind of burnout, that people just want cheap fast clothes and are happy to look like everyone else.” I somewhat agree. {The Cut}

Behind-The-Scenes Of A Vogue Nippon Photo Shoot: Editor Anna Dello Russo posted a great series of photos from a very Dolce and Gabbana-heavy shoot. Sequined pants, anyone? {Anna Dello Russo}

In Honor of Black Swan: The 10 Best Ballet-Inspired Editorials

Black Swan hits theaters tomorrow, and we’ll finally be able to get a look at those Rodarte costumes (oh, and that much-hyped sex scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis). Ballet has long been a muse for fashion, so we decided to take a look at some of the best ballet-themed editorials over the years. The fashionheads at online communities the Fashion Spot and Fashin made them easy to find–thanks!

(Sort of related: Does anyone know what’s happening with that Kate Moss/Baryshnikov ballet movie?)

Anyways, back to the editorials. Take a look.

Brad Koenig and Son Melt Our Hearts At Chanel; Here Are Fashion’s Cutest Moments

Most of what we see in fashion, as whole, can be very serious. It’s full of unsmiling models, people wearing black, harsh editors and moody vibes. We understand and appreciate the serious side of fashion. However, as you may have noticed, we have a soft spot for cuteness. Most recently, Brad Koenig’s kid at Chanel warmed our hearts and inspired us to recall our favorite cute moments over the years.
