Franca Sozzani to Receive French Legion of Honor: Franca Sozzani is finally getting the sort of lofty credit she is due. On March 13, the Italian Vogue editor will be knighted into the French Legion of Honor, the highest accolade a citizen can receive in France. Last year, the award was bestowed upon Anna Wintour. The results from the British Fashion Awards are in and while there are a lot of familiar names in the winners’ circle, there are some surprises, too. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen won for Designer of the Year (deservedly so). Alexa Chung took home the British Style award, which normally wouldn’t be so shocking–except this year she was up against Kate Middleton *gasp*. The Model category, made up of industry vets and a relative newcover, was a bit of a wild card. Stella Tennant, looking amazing in a skinny tuxedo, beat out Georgia May Jagger and Kristen McMenamy. Victoria Beckham, now a bona fide fashion designer, had some stiff competition with Burberry, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford for Designer Brand, but she won. Georgia May Jagger‘s been the face of Hudson Jeans for some time, as well as a guest designer for the denim label, and now we hear she’s costarring with another legacy child. This time it’s Patrick Schwarzenegger, the son of Maria Shriver and disgraced actor/former California governor Arnold Schwartzenegger.
Nary Manivong made waves a few seasons back for his jump from relative obscurity (and, uh, homelessness) into the heart of fashion darlings. Among the converted fans was designer Tommy Hilfiger’s daughter, Ally Hilfiger, who met Manivong in 2008 after the show for his eponymous line. The two became fast friends, and Hilfiger started styling for the new brand.
It wasn’t long before Hilfiger’s recessive fashion gene kicked in, and after two seasons the two fell into a styling-cum-design partnership, with the eventual result being a joint collection: NAHM, an it-girl-cool line influenced by Poe’s “The Raven” and centered around the classic shirt dress.
The pair presented their line last night at West Village boutique A Man and a Woman to a host of friends and fashion insiders, with musical accompaniment by DJ Chelsea Leyland and champers by Nicolas Feuillatte. Raised platforms in the center of the space showcased the sheer asymmetrical button-downs and burnt-sienna dresses that fell like water off the mannequins.
Ever come across an old photo of your mom–you know, a photo from before you even existed–and thought, “Damn, my mom looks good” and then “OMG I want that whole outfit”?
Piper Weiss did, so she started a blog called My Mom the Style Icon where she posts photos of stylish moms that date from the 1920s through the 1980s, tells the stories of the moms in the photos, and offers up hilarious commentary on their outfits. That blog is now a book, and last night Coach threw a party to celebrate its release–just in time for mother’s day. (Seriously, buy it now for your mom).
True to her mom-style obsession, Weiss, who by day is an editor at Yahoo! Shine (you should read her stuff there because it’s hilarious), wore a vintage Pierre Cardin dress that was her mom’s in the 70s that she gave what she calls a “a shoulder pad-ectomy” and had shortened. Mama Weiss, the inspiration for the book, was there too, looking stylish as ever.
There are exceptions to every rule, but it seems style is more often than not passed down from mothers to child. So we brainstormed with Weiss to come up with the ten of the most fashionable mother and daughter pairs (and one mother-son pair), and she offered her two cents on each stylish duo. What other stylish mother daughter pairs did we leave off?
