When it starts to get really cold, the only thing we can think about is warmth. And the sun. And color. While we can’t have the first two quite yet, cosmetics companies are meeting our need for the third: The spring nail polish collections are here! (Or will be very soon.) While there were a lot of neutral nails on spring runways, it seems like color for real-life nails is going nowhere. From bright pastels to shocking neon, we’re happy that nails aren’t going to be so serious this season.

We were sad to see Brooklyn-based fashion brand Octopi say goodbye last year, but luckily for us co-designer Sarah Welsh Elliott has been plenty busy since she and Madeline Davy closed up shop.

Her new project? Welsh Elliott Modernism, an e-commerce site stocked with vintage jewelry carefully selected by the designer. Octopi had its own range of graphic, modern jewelry, so it’s no surprise Welsh Elliott’s eye is so sharp. Here, you’ll find Robert Lee Morris, Givenchy, and Pierre Cardin, as well as collectable mid-century Scandinavian and Mexican artists.

We spend a lot of time around the office discussing our favorite items, from shoes to bags to whatever look book happens to be around. Sometimes the best way to find a new product is to have a friend turn you on to it. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up all of our favorite beauty products, in no particular order.

Nars, MAC, and Clinique are popular in our office, and our beauty purchasing is very high/low, ranging from Tom Ford to Neutrogena from the drugstore. And like most women, we have some things to which we’re very loyal, and some that get transitioned in and out.

Designers and Celebs Help Find a Cure With “22 Ways to Say Black”

Ever wonder what would happen if someone put Halle Berry, Julianna Margulies, and 22 one-of-a-kind designer dresses, all in the same room? Yesterday at Philips de Pury, this happened at a glamorous auction that raised over $100,000 for the American Cancer Society and La Ligue Contre le cancer in France.

Donna Karan, Thakoon, Sonia Rykiel, Diane von Furstenberg, Catherine Malandrino, Lanvin, Givenchy, and Phillip Lim (pictured, right) were among the participants, each chosen to design a little black dress that incorporated Swarovski Elements. So, the lucky few who won one of these dresses not only contributed to a great cause, but also get to walk around town in a one of a kind dress by one of the world’s most renowned designers.

Happy birthday, Style.com! The granddaddy of all fashion sites turns 10 this week, and its celebrating with a limited edition run of t-shirts created by ten top designers. We got a sneak peek of the first five tees, made by Lanvin, Alex Wang, Givenchy, Proenza Schouler, and Balmain.

Nicole Phelps, one of our favorite runway show reviewers and executive editor of Style, says that the staff wanted to give the designers “a blank canvas to work with. Plus, people love tees. Ours are a nice, affordable $45 and a portion of the proceeds go to Computers For Youth.” The common denominator? Each designer used the roman numeral X in their work.

We’re partial to Lanvin‘s iteration, mostly because we’re partial to Alber’s sketches. But you know, Proenza‘s isn’t bad either. Nor is Givenchy’s. In reality , they’re all equally fantastic.

Today, we had the pleasure of spending lunch at an exclusive preview of the new W magazine lead by Stefano Tonchi. Tonchi walked us through a slideshow of the September issue and even sat down with us at the end for an intimate Q & A.

Also lots of fun was sitting at Lynn Hirschberg’s table, who, in between bites of salmon and sips of iced tea, discussed the aftermath of her infamous M.I.A. article, being an Emmy nominee and how much she liked the upcoming film “Social Network.” We felt super lucky to get to listen to such smart, likable people as Stefano and Lynn, whose obvious passion for W lead us to be very optimistic about the magazine’s future. A reader sent in this tip (and commenter Jane picked up on it too) noting the obvious influence of a Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie on Givenchy’s Spring 2010 collection.

Bowie rocked a striped blazer during the ’70s that was strikingly similar to Givenchy’s popular graphic black and white striped jacket–right down to the angular psychedelic striping on the lapels. It’s a popular piece from the collection, and, as we pointed out earlier, Zara and Anthropologie have created similar styles, which are in stores now.

But since the rock god wore his striped lapels about 40 years ago, is Givenchy’s blazer more inspired than imitation?

It’s undeniable that Givenchy’s SS10 collection was a landmark moment for the house and designer Ricardo Tisci. A little bit tribal, a little bit psychedlic, the clothes are über popular, most recently seen on the backs of the attendees of the Marina Abramhovic dinner at MoMA.

Most popular, it seems, is the black and white blazer seen at left. An optical eye-catcher, this design was a hit on the runway, and a hit in stores–only without the Givenchy label. Both Zara and Anthropologie have created blazers highly resembling the Givenchy piece.
