Last night, Glamour magazine held their 20th annual Women of the Year Awards. The amount of lady power that packed Carnegie Hall was staggering and inspiring. Honorees included Queen Rania of Jordan, Cher, Julia Roberts, Constance McMillen (who took a stand when she couldn’t take her girlfriend to prom) and Donatella Versace. Oprah, Kate Hudson, Katie Couric, Janet Jackson, Hilary Swank and Diane Sawyer were among the presenters. Tavi Gevinson was there too, recognized as one of the mag’s 20 young women who are already changing the world. Sequined and spectacled in clear frames, Tavi looked a bit sheepish when Chelsea Clinton described her as blogging her way to become one of the most well known fashion writers out there.
One of the most compelling moments of the evening (and there were many), came when Janet Jackson presented Donatella Versace with her award. Through tears (and in a black Atelier Versace gown), Janet explained that when her brother died she called Donatella because she knew she would understand. “We both lost brothers,” Janet said, “we share a very deep bond.” Having her family wear Versace to Michael’s funeral “meant we were dressed in love,” Janet said.
