Gucci Resort 2014: A Tale of Two ’70s

Gucci Resort 2014: A Tale of Two ’70s

The assortment that Frida Giannini delivered for resort was proof-positive that there are indeed two sides to every story. To wit: Her sartorial love letter to the disco era. At times it drew from that tradition of languid American sportswear, made iconic by both Halston (on the Studio 54 dance floor) and Bill Blass (on the shoulders of Park Ave.’s Uptown set); at others it spoke to the spirit of those hedonistic babes flitting about on the other side of the pond in Celia Birtwell’s gregarious prints, Biba’s earthy-sensual frocks, and all form of Fiorucci’s cheeky chic.

Sarah Jessica Parker Knew Halston Would Get Flack For Hiring Her, and More From Her January Cover Story in Elle

Gorgeous Sarah Jessica Parker lights up the cover of January’s Elle magazine with a new interview about her infant twins and landing the top job at Halston.

“It took me a long time to say yes,” she said of being offered the position of president and chief creative officer at Halston and Halston Heritage. “I kept saying, ‘You understand, by offering this you are going to be criticized?’”

“I said, ‘Please know this now: I will never do this for a title. I will never dip in and out of this. I’ll do it like everything else I’ve ever done. I’ll be involved down to the splitting of the atom.’”

However, she admits there has been a learning curve. “I might not have the language; I can’t always tell you the exact blend of a fabric, but I figure it out,” she said.

Bonnie Takhar Out at Halston, SJP In Tears About It

Bonnie Takhar Out at Halston, SJP In Tears About It

Halston CEO Bonnie Takhar has been let go, and Sarah Jessica Parker, the label’s chief creative officer, is not happy about Takhar’s departure, Page Six is reporting.

Takhar has been with Halston since its relaunch in 2007. She got the job for her extensive experience and success growing luxury brands. Takhar’s last gig was as the Chief Commercial Officer of Jimmy Choo. Before that she took Earl Jeans from an unknown British denim line to £15 million in US sales within four years. Despite her previous successes, the board wanted Takhar out–which is not shocking given the label’s embattled state.

Harvey Weinstein, whose Weinstein Co. is one of the co-investors and principal owners of Halston said in a statement, “Sarah Jessica is a huge supporter of Bonnie’s, but it was time to change direction. It was the rest of the board that made the decision. No one was more steadfast to Bonnie than Sarah Jessica.”

According to reports, SJP was “visibly upset” upon learning that Takhar was out.

Marios Schwab Returns to His Roots For Spring 2011

Marios Schwab Returns to His Roots For Spring 2011

Fashionista contributor Long Nguyen is the co-founder/style director of Flaunt.

LONDON–From the moment the first model came out onto the wooden floor of the theater wearing a light turquoise silk bustier slip dress, followed by a model in a black stretch corseted silk crepe dress with sheer panels outlining its boning, it was clear that Marios Schwab has returned to the tight body hugging silhouette of his first collections. (The label launched in 2006.)

Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire” and Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” blasted over the loudspeakers, virtually announcing the fierce rebel spirit of these girls in lingerie dresses dabbed with lacework. Tattoo patterns were printed onto the green and pale pink silks and jerseys.

There was a sense that while these looks were youthful and geared towards a younger generation of women who want sexy clothes, the show lacked the depth of Mr. Schwab’s creative talents.

“I would say this collection is less about body concious shapes and more about fluidity and the drape of cloth on the body to accentuate key areas of interest on the body. Combining the feminine slip dresses with leather pieces which have a tougher, harder edge,” Mr. Schwab said after his show. “The women I had in mind when creating this collection are a generation of women who have multi-faceted personalities shaped by contemporary culture and the different roles she must fulfill in her life. They’re loaded with contradictory ideas and spirits.”

“Designed to bring the mystery of the female body to the surface,” the show’s centerpiece was a variation of the lingerie slip dress whether worn as a top with a slit and torn effect with white print pants or as a corset worn with black leather pants and black leather boots. Remember that Mr.Schwab’s father was an engineer at a bra factory and he had studied sewing in Salzburg when he was young. He added his own design elements to make each simple dresses more individualistic. Witness, for example, a lightly draped long silk dress in green with a cut-out at the center of the chest, or a tan leather dress with black leather upside down triangles below the nipples.

Designer To Watch: Margarita Saplala

While wandering through Barneys CO-OP last week, I noticed a lot of newish labels. One rack in particular caught my eye, because it was loaded with dresses done in bright blues and greens; they really stood out in the sea of neutrals. The label on the gorgeous, simple, drapey silk dresses read “Margarita Saplala.” Who, Read more →
