After all the backlash leading up to and following Hedi Slimane’s debut show for Saint Laurent–the rebranding of the name and ensuing confusion, the exclusion of various top editors from the show, the Twitter tirade directed at Cathy Horyn–what to expect from his second collection?
Grunge apparently. And barely a trace of the old Yves Saint Laurent.
The artist/musician Claire Boucher, known by her stage name Grimes, enchanted the fashion industry during the spring season with her ethereal “witch house” style of music (seriously, was there a show that didn’t feature her haunting songs?).
Now she’s receiving the ultimate stamp of fashion approval: Her own high-end collaboration.
In case Hedi Slimane didn’t make it clear enough already–you know, by casting Saskia de Brauw in his men’s campaign, using female models in his fall 2013 men’s show, and designing nut-crushing skinny jeans–Saint Laurent‘s menswear is not just, well, for men.
If Slimane didn’t exactly revolutionize menswear (as he did with his first show), he certainly established a different point of view of what menswear is.
Hedi Slimane has really been putting his photography skills to work as the new creative director of Saint Laurent.
Most recently, he’s rounded out his uber cool cast of musicians/models like Beck and Edie Campbell with pouty It girl/up-and-coming musician Sky Ferreira (who was front row at his PFW debut and wore pre-fall look 7 while performing on Jimmy Fallon last week).
Looking like the opposite of a “Loser,” Beck Hansen plays a big role in Hedi Slimane’s rebranding efforts as the male star of the new Saint Laurent creative director’s first ad campaign. And we think it’s a perfect fit.
For the start of 2013, we’re clamoring over vintage photos of Audrey Hepburn, anticipating Season 2 of Girls, and looking to try out some neon makeup looks and new leather booties.
